The Little Quilt Room ~ Closing for Summer

Hi on this rainy Friday. [trust me, it is barely 60* here].

Mo and I are cold. I know summer's unbearable heat is just days away but...brrr. I had to get out our Warmies [HERE, lavender and grain heating pads] because we got so wet and chilled on our walk. Mo has added one of his cashmere sweater blankies and best dolly, Gator.

June quilts:

Winter Marsh did not get put together by June 1st, or even July 1st next week.

The inner word border is taking time and focus.

Important to avoid the dreaded ''chevron effect'', top two geese, which occurs when one does both light and dark Vs.

I marked all the strips and made notes for my plans. Unless the rain stays and why would it, it never has...I won't get back to this project til January!

Even if I have some machine sewing days, I hope to make a Christmas gift small quilt, and possibly free up time for Lori/ Humble Quilts Fall sewalong, unless it is a mystery. [she is already planning, so something fun to look forward to in September!].

Last week I forgot to show you the pincushion I made w my tiny iPhone quilt's too-small try out block. Funny how a little new item can bring a smile.

We did have a few deck sewing afternoons and I finished the binding of Welcome.

I love the backing, a long saved fabric from a road trip to the Fabric Warehouse and their piles of end-lot quilt fabrics they used to sell. This print reminds me of early American redware/ tin glazed sgraffito pottery. [here

I have not put any initials or dates; maybe someday. And I have not washed the quilt. Being a wall banner, it really doesn't need to be soft and scrunchy, though I had planned the leaves to fray for depth and texture.

When I was working on the project, I dithered about the final sawtooth border, feeling ''lazy'' to not do that, but I could never make the colors gel. Now I am happy that I chose to eliminate that extra width. The finished piece just fits about the pine bride's bench.

Forgive the blue tape! Of course in the fall I will fill the bench with more apropos décor, crocks, pumpkins, bittersweet. Though I have less hope than ever that my Thanksgiving dreams will ever come to be.

...........................

The tie dye tee-shirts pleased my friend, for her daughter for camp. Camp starts next week, so we'll see if the project is a kiddie style success too. The tees were rather a challenge, causing some neck and back pain---my friend thought I was a big ol' lazy procrastinator! Besides time waiting for inks and dyes to cure and set, there was somewhat of a learning curve to produce four separate designs, tie dye, resist dye, spatter paint, ice dye; then iron-on patches and sewed on trims; knotted fringe! And the tees all had to be altered to fit the tiny child. Harder than they look, but I enjoyed the process--new/old and different. [pics are very edited for child and camp's privacy, sorry.]

Poof, and June is over.

.....................

Journals: still plugging away. I find the painting and coloring so much more calming than machine sewing. I'll put pics in a post over the weekend or Monday-ish.

Have a great weekend, get out your red white white and blue! I unearthed my 4th of July quilts yesterday.

  1. "Welcome" is just beautiful--I love that pineapple so much--nice work on the colors...you do that so well;))) Really a spectacular finish on this...
Love those tie-dye tees you've made--they will just love them...
It IS cold still here too...we walked with jackets on this morning--winds off the waters still chilly.
Take care and enjoy this weekend hugs, Julierose

  2. It has been alternately hot and dry, then wet and cold (now), though warm and wet is forecast for the next few days. Even the rabbit who visits the garden is sorely disappointed! I love that pineapple finish, and you're right, it's perfect above that sweet brides bench. The tees are totally adorable, hopefully the young recipient will be delighted.

  3. We have had about 7 weeks of constant sunshine here! As we have water from a spring way up the hill (shared with others) we're being very careful with the water and any run off in the sink before the hot water comes through is used to water round outside. Apparently my roses should each be having a bucket of water daily in this heat. I cannot manage more than a splash by way of encouragement.

That Winter Marsh quilt is absolutely gorgeous. Is the wording all applique? You should be proud of this, and the lovely pineapple quilt too, which looks just perfect in its spot over the pine bench. Those wee t-shirts look lovely and I bet were well received.

Hope you get some warm weather soon and send us a bit of rain (at nights!!)

    1. Your roses look gorgeous, so they must be happy with the water you can spare. My dad was very frugal and we did save sink-run water for his veggie garden or the pasta pot.
Roses must be quite hardy and drought resistant, judging from the roses that fill the dry dunes here?
Thanks for your kind comments about my projects. The words are applique but not finished sewing. Partly machine stitched, partly hand whip stitched.

  4. P.S. That link to the redwork pottery - OH MY! That is absolutely amazing - SO many pieces I would love to own. Just as well I don't live nearby . . .

    1. Isn't that redware wonderful. I have never been able to afford even a small jug. I'd love some plates, even repros.

  5. No sawtooth border necessary on your wondrous Pineapple Quilt. Perfect; it was absolutely made for that space. You must be thrilled with how it turned out!!
I have background fabric envy. What a stunning design. It almost has a feel of Fraktur illustrations. A real find.
You'll use your gorgeous little log cabin pincushion a lot. I use mine constantly. - also made from a left over block that I couldn't bear to see floating around my sewing table any longer. Penny

  6. I so love the colors of your Winter Marsh quilt. The colors seemed rather appropriate for your rainy cool day too. We are finally getting some 80 + degree weather here. It's been a long time coming. I was pleased to see your pineapple quilt all bound and ready to hang. It is so charming. The backing fabric is great. It's hard to remember that there are places in the world that have summer with cooler weather. It wouldn't seem like summer if it wasn't hot and I know the intense heat will arrive eventually.

  7. I always love to see what you're working on! The lettering for the quilt looks kind of hard, but I'm really loving the colors. And your tiny quilt block pincushion is adorable!
I love that you've finished the pineapple Welcome wall quilt - and it fits great on that wall! I hope you get to use it a lot!
It's kind of dry here - we got a sprinkle a few days ago and all it did was make it muggy, ugh.
I will look forward to seeing more of your art!
The beach photos from Africa were really pretty but I couldn't spot the dolphins, even making the photos larger. Oh, well. I'll have to figure out how to make them much bigger and try again!
    Take care!

  9. This post is jam-packed with goodness, Lizzy. Almost too much to know where to begin with comments.
This seems to be a strange spring/summer here in Ohio. The past two days have been in the low 60s with even lower temps at night. I thought I knew Ohio summers but this this year!
Winter Marsh is looking wonderful. I love the crows, the stars, the plaids, the sun, the letters... I guess I love it all! I'm with you in avoiding the chevron effect of flying geese. I like unity among my geese.
What a fun pin cushion! I'm trying to figure out how you attached the button, and can't.
Oh, Welcome looks great! If you were going to add initials and dates, would you put them between the sides of the pineapple and the hearts?
You went to a lot of work with the tie dyed shirts. It's great your friend's daughter liked them.
I hope it's warmed up a little for you and Mo!
