Tiny Quilt ~ ''Tis Spring''

Spring

Just as we lose hope

she ambles in,

a late guest

dragging her hem

of wildflowers

her torn

veil of mist,

 of light rain,

blowing

her dandelion breath

in our ears;

and we forgive her,

turning from

chilly winter

ways,

we throw off

our faithful

sweaters

and

open

our arms.

                               by Linda Pastan

I love this poem, so perfectly descriptive and charming.

One more week til  Summer begins on the astronomical calendar. This tiny quilt was a spring challenge, a freebie from TQC.  HERE  [March 23, 2016] "Welcome Spring"

Here is mine.

It is sooo tiny. Just a smidge larger than my cell phone, a perfect little doily for me, who constantly loses her phone in the house.
Auditions and backing. Sure wish this was not the last smidge of this spools print, all my colors, a favorite.

Some glamour shots---showing my inspiration pansies, great colors this year.

I asked if friends wished to make Tis Spring with me. Here is Penny's lovely , very TQC colored version. She does such beautiful piecing. She says she is still looking for just the right pink stripe for the binding.

She has beautiful fabrics in her stash!

And this is Robin of I like to Create's version. I love her patriotic colorway and stripes and plaids. Robin said she isn't using that blue eagle print for the borders--kinda hope she changed her mind, because it looks so cool.

What a fun small project. Anyone else want to take an hour or two and make a Tis Summer version?

Yes, It's Yellow

Made another block or two. I started this during Covid lockdown, mindless piecing during those frightful dark days. Pieced the blocks incorrectly and now have started over. Looking at the book/ pattern last night I see I need a LOT more red.

The  unfortunate connotation has shifted though: no more Covid memories--instead I'll remember the day last week when our skies turned mustard yellow orange and the air smelled like burnt BBQ instead of ocean and salt. [Quebec wildfire smoke pollution funneled here to the east coast US June 7, 2023]

This week's project! Harder than it looks---it's been many many years since I did tie dye. "Pimp my ugly camp T shirt, please?"

Ice dye, above. Nope. My old tee as a tryout, below. RIT dye and rubberbands.

*****************

And an eBay auction Fail. Always a risk, often a disappointment---and so this one is. Big bucks too, whatever was I thinking, "Oh poor me, in the smoke filled house, I need a treat"

More on this one later. Maybe.

A funny little rain squall has arrived, Mo is hiding on the sofa back, in a snit because the spa van lady gave him his bath and brushed out all his dense old winter fur.

I hope everyone has a great week!

  2. The tiny quilt would make a sweet mugrug! Fun way to use up a few scraps, but wouldn't make a dent in the mounds building up in the corner here. So that quilt top you showed - the sashings look a lot like some 1980s (or maybe 70s) fabric I got from an estate a few years ago. The smoke was bad here for a few days last week. Been a weird summer so far. Thankfully we've had much needed rain this week but it has been cold again.

  3. Your teeny quilt is very pretty and the others are too. Hard to believe it's almost officially summer. Too bad about the wildfire smoke. Your yellow blocks are cheerful despite the covid/wildfire smoke connection (and it looks like you have some yellowware bowls as well?)

  4. Such a tiny quilt! It's adorable, though. I can see where the yellow quilt blocks and the smoky air would be linked in your memories - they're the same color!! And I'm not sure why the quilt top is a fail...

Silly Mo -- I'd think he'd be glad to be rid of the winter fur! Maybe he feels manhandled? I'm sure he'll forgive it.

What happened to the street? Flooding or a broken water main?

Hoping we have a NICE summer - we're about due for one, right?!

  5. What a beautiful poem for a late-coming spring. I love the imagery.
Your little quilt is adorable. That spools fabric IS great! It looks both vintage and modern at the same time. The other two quilts are fun, too.
What size are the squares in your yellow quilt blocks? I'm guessing 1"? They look very cheerful.
Oh my gosh, that sky! We had what looked like fog or mist but no color. Everything looked hazy. Awful to have that smell, too.
So did you buy the ebay quilt and it was awful, or it was a fail because you didn't get the high bid? It's an interesting quilt.
I hope Mo is happier now.
Good thing they blocked off that pothole. It looks huge!

  6. Your mini quilt turned out so cute. I love the combination of fabrics that you chose. I still haven't picked out what to use for a binding. I like the eagle fabric but to cut it small enough for a binding would make the eagle undistinguishable. I probably should have used it for a border and then worried about binding. I don't remember seeing the yellow blocks. They are so bright and cheerful. I've never heard of ice tie-dying, so interesting.
    Enjoy your early summer~
