Butterflies and Hummingbirds

Hi, everyone! This morning was still, and sunny, and hot, a late summery day.  When I looked out at the ocean to see what the dredgers were up to, and to check my flowers for migrating monarch butterflies, I was thrilled to again have a visit from the hummingbird who has discovered my zinnias. She came and went, mostly stayed for quite a long time, as I stood frozen, not wanting to scare her away. I am saying ''she'' because I didn't see the red throat feathers that the male Ruby Throated Hummingbird displays. [Tho of course it could be a different blue and green species, migrating by  the ocean edge.] Later she visited again, as I was inside cooking and Mo was sunning on the deck. What a thrill.

The past few weeks have been filled with also migrating Monarch butterflies. They seem to love the flowers when the inner section bursts into a tiny yellow crown of flowers. [so deadheading is limited.] They aren't shy and allowed photos!

Monarch butterflies migrate  each fall, just like birds. They travel to either Mexico and/ or S. California. HERE

Fall is also when the dahlias come into full beautiful bloom. These are third year supermarket 2 for 5.oo bulbs, finally growing big and producing many blooms. I save the bulbs each Fall, replant in May. This dahlia was originally deep red, it has reverted to smaller but pretty plum-red and white .

..................

Mo and I  have been peeking at the beach. He likes to get a drink from the public foot shower at the beach entry. I taught him this summer, he learned fast. It's by his bench he loves.

I got a new phone. It's wonderful, the camera is much better, so pictures here should be improving. But it has taken so much time all week to reload and update apps and contact lists; relocate or redo passwords etc. Not done at all, sigh.  I did not sew at all, I don't think. I do miss my sweet and pretty old iPhone 5, but it was dying. Onward with the new.

have a good weekend!

gone to the beach...

This was a fair on the beach last week. To get there was too circuitous, so Mo and I just peeked over the fence. It looks so fun, I adore fairs and rides, though too chicken to  go on most. I bet the view from the ferris wheel was amazing.

  2. Beautiful butterflies and flowers.
I have crowds of bees on the Echiums, they love the blue flowers. Sunny Spring days make such a difference.

  3. Lovely photos of your dahlias, zinnias and butterflies..great article, too.
We have a field below us full of scrubby flowering bushes and wild honeysuckle, so hummingbirds are darting in and out frequently..and
occasionally they hover near us on our deck--are they curious, do you think? (Like--what are these giant creatures??). We are not nectar-filled enough though lol;))) hugs, Julierose

  4. Love your flowers and butterflies!! Today is one of the coldest days we've had. Yesterday I was in shorts, today I have a flannel shirt on. Feels like fall here for sure.
The fair was right on the beach? The sand?
    Looks like fun.
Thanks again for your help the other evening.

  5. Congrats on your new phone - I know how much of a pain in the butt it is to get everything set back the way you want it! But the camera is great, the pictures are nice and sharp!!

I love the plum and white dahlia, I think it's prettier than a solid red anyway. Your other flowers are doing great, too! Very nice to attract butterflies and a hummingbird! I've been seeing a lot of monarch pictures on the local 'snapshot' fb page, apparently the migration numbers are rising again, helped along by people who are raising the butterflies. Nice.

Mo at the foot-shower reminds me of my cat and the bathroom sink! Of course, kids get a kick out of getting a drink from odd places, so I guess it shouldn't be surprising that our pets do, too, lol!

It's 66 here today with a few scattered showers. Fall has come, I think!

    Take care!

  7. I am envying your butterflies! All of mine are gone for the year. I got your package and I love my hearts! They smell so good! I have them hanging on my antique typewriter. And I can enjoy them from where I sit. Thank you! Kit

  8. I always feel so lucky to encounter butterflies and hummingbirds. Such a treat. Really up close and personal for you right there on your deck. The flowers are very pretty. Amazing info on butterfly migration, who knew...not me.

Mo is too cute, and smart :)

Still plenty warm here, but cool enough breezes that I am actually venturing outdoors while the sun is still up. I'm trying to get back into the habit of walking on a regular basis. Wish me continued motivation, please.

Oh, you HAVE to add a spin on that ferris wheel to your bucket list! If I was there, I would go with.

Got my hearts yesterday, all is right with the world. LOVE THEM!

Pics are looking really good, by the way.
