Bitty Goes to the Beach

Hi! Summer is on a roll now, endless hot sunny days from now until November.

Our heat wave has broken though, Friday it rained!

Rain, just showers, but a front of drier air has prevailed. I suppose there's not a big difference between 85* and 79* degrees---it's the humidity that makes things unpleasant. But one day was so hot I had to keep Mo in and run the AC! In the day time!

This week I was very glad I had Bitty [a crib quilt by Minick and Simpson] all set to be handquilted.

I was too busy and too hot and miserable to enjoy prepping applique blocks, plus the wind at the beach recently has been making fine applique sewing difficult.

Bitty is a bit large for the beach but okay. [The blue stripes are a beach towel, not part of Bitty.]

I plan to do outline quilting for texture.

I tried blue silk thread for the stitching on the flowers. I found I don't like using silk for quilting thread at all. It is too thin; knots and breaks. Back to regular cotton.

I really need bright sun to do decent quilting, so sitting under the umbrella made my quilting look a bit basting-ish here and there! I decided I would go on and do all the quilting, not be fussy and pick out bad stitches. When the entire top is quilted, maybe twenty years from now I'll reassess and redo.

.............................
I often mention how no one ever wants my quilts---or to be fair to myself, ANY quilts! (''ugh, nasty, so grandma, so tacky, not minimal"). I try to be resigned to that, and just work on things for my own pleasure. But now and then I forget my resolutions. Anyway inside that tent

is a darling baby who I gifted one of my tropical beachy baby quilts. The mom  accepted and she uses it as a beach mat or diaper change mat with the wrong side only being shown, a large flipflop pattern print from Company Store. My carefully planned, lovingly sewed design is turned to the floor always.  The main thing is she uses it. Hmmm.

....................................

After the Fourth I undid the red-white-and blue decor of my house. It felt too hopeful, so "all dressed up with no place to go". We did have a delightful fun holiday, but by Fireworks night everyone was exhausted. Kids and babies and  friends all fell asleep long before the fireworks began at 9.45. So my excitement to have a fireworks evening on my deck was a fizzle. Mo and I watched the firewoorks, just us two---sweat pouring down my face.

I'm glad I did not, in the end, make the strawberry/ blueberry shortcake I had wanted. Earlier my German  potato salad was a hit though, it was entirely eaten, the bottom of the bowl scraped. Bacon, it was the bacon, right?
So my cottage has reverted to its blue and white self.

I love summer daisies, don't you.

And here is the beach.

I did not get photos but was so thrilled to see the  Oystercatcher parents, the couple I mentioned last week, together, carefully shepherding their three little chicks down to the tide pool to learn to eat! Despite all the activity on the beach, there they were, little puffs of grey golfball sized fluff on long stilty legs.

And Gully was there!

And one day we made sandcastles. I haven't had anyone to make sandcastles with for quite a few years. This is a friend's almost-four years old darling little girl.

Have a good week!

love

gone to the beach....

PS I don't know why the crib quilt is called Bitty.

  1. Is the beach breeze cool? It's been in the low 90s (although anything over 90 is TOO HOT!) here and without air conditioning it sucks.

LOL, I like how your beach towel matches Bitty! I've never quilted without some sort of frame, not sure how that would work out. Personally I kind of like seeing 'imperfect' hand quilting because then I KNOW it was handmade, not made in some sweatshop.

Hopefully someday your quilts will all find loving homes!

Mo is cute in his 4th 'hat' - too bad no one else stayed up for fireworks. Although I have to admit I went to bed shortly after dark myself, not willing to deal with the heat and bugs and noise to watch this year. Maybe next year!

    1. I hope your AC gets fixed TOMORROW! It was not that hot here but Mo cannot survive temps much above 80*, he'l get heat stroke and die! Literally. And the pavement burns his little feet.

The beach breeze can be cooling [in January], but on the hottest days last week it was still. Then--if the breeze is off the water it is from the south and 100% humidity sometimes. Everything feels wet. Clothes, beds, floor; my wood furniture gets drip marks. Everything rusts, my fairly new wall oven is sooo rusty already, as is the dishwasher.
Usually a breeze from the north or east is drier and nicer, esp from the east/ northeast [from Maine!]...and a land breeze, from the west is hot and muggy. So just having a breeze is not a huge help. I thought I'd pass out walking back home thone of the hottest days, couldn't catch my breath, ugh.

Loving home on the landfill, oh well.

Bitty could use a frame but Im not in the mood to tote a hoop down to the shore. I ll just have to think the imperfections are its charm. I'm using the flannel for batting, so it is very thin for hand sewing.

I hate watching fireworks alone. Mo tries tho, but mostly he wanted to chase helicopters, lol. It's funny that he notices helis but not the fireworks or the booms.

  2. Quilts and sandcastles on the beach with sweet little girls for helpers, how fun! I like your soft blue and white beach cottage decor, so restful and inviting. What can I say about folks who don't appreciate handcrafted workmanship, sigh! I guess we all know some who fall in that category but if we're lucky there are one or two in the family who love and want every quilt we make. Luckily, my son, DIL, daughter and granddaughter all love quilts! I feel so blessed, knowing when I'm gone they will love the treasures waiting for them in the blanket chests.

    1. Oh I love the idea of a cedar chest filled with your quilts, which will be loved and hold memories in your dear family's hearts!

  3. You picked the perfect time to show off Bitty. I love yours. I made the background with pale blue fabrics I bought for it and then wasn’t sure I liked it. It’s been sitting waiting and when I took it out a few days ago ,I still wasn’t keen so I made another background with cream, blue, yellow and red and guess what, they are both back in the cupboard. After seeing yours, I think I just have the wrong shades of blue.

    1. Hi! I wondered how your Bitty was coming along. Probably both your backgrounds are great. I have a pin on Pinterest of the original Bitty, if I can I ll send it to you, maybe it will clarify your thoughts. I think as long as the ground is pale it will work. BUT I think it would be so cute with maybe a red checked ground and folky bright appliques too.Two of my backgrounds are vintage French or German from a bundle bought on etsy, then the stripe is a vintage piece from my stash, a chintz.

  4. I don't know why anyone would not want a quilt. They are perfect for so many things. Right now I have so many crocheted baby blankets to give away but no one to give them to just yet. Perhaps I would do better to start making small ones for all the rescued cats and dogs in this country. Kisses to Mo! Have a great week.

    1. Making blankets for the rescues is a wonderful idea! Also--donate to hospitals for sick babies? I bet they'd be a hit on etsy but I suppose that isn't an option.

hope all is well and not too hot!

  5. I am so glad Bitty is getting some time in at the beach! It's a wonderful quilt and will undoubtedly provide many more hours of joy.:) I always feel so sad for those like you who do not have family and friends to love their quilty achievements. Glad you're able to take the 'personal' out of it and remind yourself it's more of an aesthetic thing.:)

  6. Mo looks super! I think your quilts are great! I admire your ability to think outside the box and make it work on pattern directions. A bit rebellious, in a good way.
Your version of Bitty is so sweet. That baby is fortunate to have your little treasure and, hopefully, someday that little one will realize it.

  8. Bitty looks at home out there. Soooo, does the person using her quilt put the 'right' side down to protect it from baby gunk? Like, she doesn't want it to get messed up?

The ocean looks so inviting, how chilly is it?

I'm glad you and Mo watched fireworks together. Sorry the weather has been so uncomfortable. Similar situation here since Friday. Finally a little cooler tonight. I'm hoping to sleep well...

    Really beautiful pics.

  9. It's good to see Gully and the Oystercatcher family again.
Bitty is coming on a treat - that backing works so well. I'm a sucker for a good backing! That little quilt is perfect with your Summer décor. You and Mo keep cool. Penny

    1. Thanks, Lori. A good view but not as dramatic as your mountains! Wouldn't a quilt w your high desert and mountain wildflowers be wonderful! I picture them in wool on a crackly white/ cream batik or Grunge background to represent your mountain peaks. :-)

  11. Now why anyone in their right mind would not want a quilt is beyond me! They are so lovely and so useful around the house. And yours are especially pretty. :) Kit

    1. Thanks Kit! As Audrey says, above, it's an aesthetic thing. I should be more understanding as in my own house I awalys want things to ''go'' together.

  12. Oh, the heat and humidity. I don't know how you can quilt with it, but I admire you for doing it.

I am surprise not to see people covering the sand at your beach. It must be a private beach?

Have I told you how much I love Bitty? It is a great quilt!

I'm blessed that my daughter uses the quilts I've made for my grandbabies. In fact, by the time they're two she tells me how much they need bigger quilts! But it is frustrating to make something beautiful by hand and not have it appreciated. So much love goes into making a quilt for a specific person. It would break my heart to have it rejected (and I think I would be tempted to never make another thing for that person -- shame on me!).

Daisies?! Yes, please. They say summer just as much as sunshine and blue skies!

  13. Hi! Thanks again for comments fix!

I don't mind quilting in the summer, I'd prob have a beach towel on my lap if not a little project, always hiding from the sun.

Yes a private beach, plus it is huge, acres and acres of empty sand. It got extra big this winter too, which is good. The town beaches far to the east and west are locals only too.

You and your daughter sound like kindred spirits, how lovely that she loves your handwork.
