Christmas is Coming!

Hi! It's mid-December, oh how time flies these days. And here I am awaiting Santa, the house all decked in its own small way.

The tree is decorated, the quilts are out, aired and admired once again.

I got a new little tree this year. It does not have integrated lights, so was very inexpensive. I love it! I've wanted a white tree for years, got a bargain with this cutie.

These are repro Shiny Brite ornaments I got at Home Goods. So adorable, wish I d bought more sets. Be sure to save the boxes, old or new.

My Noah's Ark is out with about 1/3 of the animals displayed.

A quick walk thru. Mo and I expect a few guests over the holiday weeks, but I mostly decorate for myself--and for you! I hope you enjoy a peek around.

Tiny treasures hidden in the stacked Shaker and pantry boxes.

The quilts are the first Christmas decor to emerge, I love seeing them. Some are aired, then used on beds and sofas.

Others are refolded and stacked.

And then there's all the Christmas minis I have made over the past years.

Mo is interested but perplexed. Though that may just be his resting Pug face?

He LOVES his Trader Joe's  Advent calendar. But I fear he is learning bad habits, what will he expect come January?!

Presents are wrapped, hidden or mailed.  I finished the skating outfit for my little friend's soon to be supplanted by bigger/ better Dolly. So fun to design and make doll clothes.

Wine is chosen, menu is planned. Cookies will be baked next week, always the last thing I do. My mom used to make many cookies, all thru December. One year, I was very small, but a willing helper--she was in a frenzy baking for a party or cooky swap, but my dad ate the cookies as fast as she baked and decorated. Now remember these were young parents, maybe early thirties, and though later bickering became an art form, back then they rarely argued.  I was the big eyed spectator to this tiff, unforgettable. [Kids see all, recall all.]

So as Daddy's hand reached for yet another cookie [Pfeffernüsse? eew], my mom lost her temper---burst into tears,  grabbed the tray of cookies and dumped it on the kitchen floor at my dad's feet. Screeched, "I will NEVER bake another cooky. Ever." And she did not. She followed up unbeknownst to us, by selling all our cooky cutters to an antiques/ vintage dealer friend! And years later when I came home from college, my dad and I went to make the cookies---not a cookie cutter was to be found. Mom was unrepentant. "I told you so fifteen years ago..

My dad went to his workshop and created the white star cutter in the pics below [left]. Was it made from aluminum siding or a gutter? I treasure it. The colored handled ones remind me of the vintage cutters my mom gave away.

After the cooky fiasco, my mom---undaunted--- instead embraced the creation of a traditional European Christmas bread, stollen , recipe from her own mom. Normally a wonderful educated gourmet cook and baker, her stollen was truly terrible, worse than her famously bad meatloaf. We'd use it up by making french toast or bread pudding on New Years Day morning. (Stollen is  a braided yeast bread with nasty candied fruit similar to Panettone, but a flat braid.)

Holiday  memories, family stories, do you have one to share?

gone to the beach...

beach pics/ Wednesday: a clear storm, as we call them here. High winds from the south over the ocean. 50+ mph gusts. Huge waves. I had to wash my salt encrusted windows today.

And rainbows from my chandelier prism suncatchers greet me now each morning.

Happy Holidays!

  1. Your home is so beautifully decorated for Christmas/Winter days, Lizzy--[I spy your little Whatnots in "pride of place;"))) ]. I really love your little tree and the glass ornaments...
Love your cookie story--sounds like my Mom--except there is no way she EVER made cookies hahaha or really did baking--but she was a good cook and our meals were always excellent...
    I don't do cookies per se--but I love making "cookie bars"--lazy really, I guess...
I have not as yet decorated our prelit tree--[not a favorite--I think it looks to commercial really!!)
Anyhoo--I took out my very first wall hanging the "Crows' Christmas" one and hung it in the dining area...
Hope your weekend is a good one--and you are prepared for the incoming snow predicted...
Could we possibly have a white Christmas?
    that would be super...hugs, Julierose

  2. Oh Lizzy your house is so festive! I love it and your collection of Christmas quilts. The white tree is beautiful as well as the ornaments. My mom always made pies and they were out of this world. I still can’t make pie crust like hers…so flaky and delicious. Enjoy the weekend!

  3. I love your little white tree! And the ornaments are great!

Pfeffernusse cookes SOUND good but yes, not so great, lol. Maybe an acquired taste? We are baking cookies this weekend - our family traditional three, plus a new chocolate shortbread I've always wanted to try. Friends are coming to help so it will probably be chaos, but fun!

I always love your decorating! Kelly has put up more decorations than I've put out in years so it actually feels like a holiday!

    Thanks for sharing!

  4. Your home looks bright and festive! Everything is so invitingly arranged, just beautiful!
I'm glad to see Noah and his ark out again and to see your little carved angel and girl.
White trees were popular when I was little and I think I liked them then but I favor green Christmas trees now. I have an 4' artificial, Alpine-style one standing on a table, yet unlit and undecorated. My daughter and son-in-law set it up and then we moved on to other things and that's as far as I got. Maybe I'll just enjoy photos of other people's trees and decorations this year.
The glass ornaments are beautiful. I still have many of the ones my mom used to put on our trees. They are regular size ornaments, so probably slightly larger than yours.
You have a great collection of red and white quilts--so festive! I think the one with the green tree with the red bird at the bottom right is new. I like it a lot!
What a story about your parents and the cookies, and especially that your mom did not make cookies again. A woman of her word! But to sell the cutters. Oh!
What a sweet skating outfit. So impressive! Sewing doll clothes takes me a lot of time, maybe because the pieces are so little?
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas season!

  5. I don't think I was reading your blog when you made the little tree mini quilt. I made one too that year. I love the embellishments of rusty bells and the red bird really sets the whole thing off. Just so cute. Your white tree is lovely. I just have my 3 ft. artificial tree set up. My husband put on a small string of lights but I haven't got around to the ornaments. It's kind of a clean out year so I know when I get the ornament boxes out - some of them won't ever be put back. Rather sad . . . My mother made fudge for everyone. I can't tell you how many cousins have come up to me and said how much they looked forward to the fudge. The postal rates weren't like they are now. I mailed two small tins of fudge this year and it cost me $30 (GASP!) Those cousins will probably just be getting a card next year. Julierose mentioned a white Christmas for you ladies that live in the northeast. Wouldn't that be wonderful!!! I don't know why but the holiday season this year seems to be full of reflection. What have I accomplished, what do I have planned for the future? It's really quite an amazing time to be alive.

  6. Oooh, all the gorgeous Christmas quilts and pillows, how beautiful your home looks in all its finery! I remember that giraffe from a few years ago. So sweet. Presents already wrapped? Please come and wrap mine! Haven't even begun but I think they have all arrived and hopefully can start on that job tomorrow. Cards all in the mail as of this morning. Looking forward to my son and his family being here for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day again this year. Menu planning needs to happen before weekend so we can get the necessary shopping done on Monday. Dear little Mo needs a second post-advent calendar don't you think?! You have snow! I can't imagine how beautiful that must be on the beach, I don't think we ever had snow when we went to the beach in Oregon. Would love to see the excitement on your little friend's face when sees her new dollys outfit! You do such a beautiful job stitching those tiny pieces.
