Hi everyone! This weekend I'm catching up on my Nature Journal. Yes, I am behind, but I know what goes where, just need to sit down and focus. I'd do better if my painting area was not also my sewing area.
Looking back, some finishes, or almost finished, from December 2024:
Ornamental beach grasses:
Winter Rose: [a fail, but I felt like trying.]
safflower, finished:
Winter hydrangeas
Narcissus bulb
Interesting leaves:
On IG I admire the botanical drawings of artist Louisa May Watson. She did a tutorial with ivy leaves, "just trace around the leaf..."
Another time I was bemoaning the lack of things to draw and she said, oh draw what you like, what speaks to you....a shell, a pebble, whatever. So I did a tiny snow day.
And you may be seeing lots of pebbles and shells too. Today Mo and I found twigs, two twigs, lol. I was pleased.

List of birds seen: hawk/ osprey/ ducks/ mating mocking birds. The hawk soars over the dunes early afternoon. He is very large and graceful in a stately sort of way.
Early mornings I see longs skeins, ragged trails, of thousands of ocean ducks. They look like smoke or ribbons of something. I peer, I squint---balloon strings?---I believe they roost in the marshes' quiet waters, then travel at dawn to hunt fish in the open ocean. [photo is geese, who will form a more constructed V to fly.]
And then--a pair if mocking birds. One was sitting calmly, the other preening and flapping and unfurling its wings. I watched for a long time, was she stuck or injured, but no. A mating dance, I am assuming.

A beautiful book to share. I cannot afford it, but so admire: Still: The Art of Noticing by Mary Jo Hoffman here
Also on Amazon, plus a page on Instagram.

Wanted for my bulb gardens and/ or a terrariums. Oh how I loved making terrariums with my dad! This moss selection is lovely.
Mo on a snowy morning. Mo says, ''Relax, sleep in, go back to bed. Nap, snacks. Enjoy each snowy day!"
More snow, starting soon.

Blooming Bulbs Preplanted Garden, late white amie w many buds! New Pinky amaryllis on the left.
Beautiful watercolors in your Nature Journals, Lizzy;))) and there are no FAILS--really just different stages of growth as a sketcher...I think your sketches are beautiful...
ReplyDeleteLooks like we are in for "plowable" snow this time!! We are all hunkered down here --my granddaughter just moved in with my daughter to finish out her Senior year at college and she got a "snow shovel" as a moving in gift! Gotta love it;)))
The skies have darkened quite a bit over here this afternoon...it "looks like" snow, if you know what I mean...take care and follow Mo's advice--he is just so sweet--and smart;)))
Hugs, Julierose
I love seeing your little watercolor journal paintings. Something about their tiny size makes them especially appealing. 3-5 inches of snow coming at us tonight, it's already been an ice skating rink in our area for the past week. So ready for winter to depart.
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful that you've been keeping up drawings and paintings in this journal all this time. And I agree it's hard to use the same area for all creative endeavors.
ReplyDeleteI love the beach grass drawing. It's amazing how you've captured the essence of it.
I also love your rose hips. They are delightful.
I have some crepe myrtle pods (just because I can't leave interesting pods behind) but never knew what they were.
I have Still on reserve at the library. I think I'm about 200 on the waiting list, but it will come one of these days/weeks. I'm glad to have another recommendation for it.
I hope you are able to stay warm!
Lovely art work - you are inspiring me. I loved the look of that book but it is impossibly expensive here, with the postage from the States thrown in. Even on Amazon it's £30. I wonder if the Library here can get a copy for me. Will try this week.
ReplyDeleteWe may have snow flurries tomorrow - the day the car has to go in for oil change & glow plugs and I have to walk to and from town.
Thanks! The artwork is so quiet and calming, tho paitience is helpful. Yes I'd love to see Still, no way would my library have it. A few years from now maybe it will turn up on one of my used book sites. Let me know if you get to see it.
DeleteI hope you don't have to do two long walks in the snow. Maybe the garage guys would give you a lift, or a neighbor? One of those guys you spoil w your delightful cake. btw, inspired by you I had to make a cake! Lemon pound cake w lemon juice and marmalade marinade, then lemon and sugar drizzle. No one I know eats sweets so I froze it.
Your Nature journal paintings are lovely and please do continue to comment on my blog - I don't have comment moderation so they should pop up straight away. If they don't it's not because I have stopped them. I really don't do that to anyone!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting.
DeleteI really love your nature journaling and admire your commitment. I have set that aside for now - so many irons in the fire as they say. Fabric is really calling my name these days. I have that book on hold at the library. People in the Net Loft watercolor group have mentioned it a few times. I am also intrigued by seasons. So much loveliness if you pay attention. Thanks for this beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteLovely nature journaling. I love that combination of ink drawings and watercolor. You've brought nature indoors beautifully with the amaryllis.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post
ReplyDeletePosting for Mel: I always LOVE to see your art! Pfff - a month behind in nothing - I'm YEARS behind! Since Blogger won't let me comment there I decided I'll just come comment on fb. Keep painting!
