Valentine's Day ♥️~ No longer an exciting day of school projects and stern teacher warnings ["all or none!"], glitter, glue, and colored doilies; Ninja Turtles and My little Pony, Barney, Snoopy, Teletubbies. But a fun time to get out some of a life time of collecting heart shaped objects. Though I surely wish I'd saved those childhood tiny cards that came in my shoebox mailbox each February.
I always dreamed of romantic Valentine's dinners with a dreamy lover---maybe you did too?
My parents went all out, handmade cards, romantic dinners w pink champagne, always flowers--my dad was frugal, no red roses! He'd bring his fave carnations instead, usually a red and white mix for my mom, lots of baby breath, and when I was small [and cute] three pink carnations for me. A card and a few dollars for my brother. Pretty sure chocolate was forbidden, though we made the heart shaped pink cake from my vintage Betty Crocker kids cookbook every year.
Now during this foggy, snowy gray Valentine's Day week , gale warnings flashing red on my screen alerts, I'll share my own little Valentine's displays with you all instead, considering hearts more as a folk art motif, if perhaps a very literal, too easy one.
The Swedish bench.
With bandboxes, and other finds.
Hearts [and Flowers/ OXOXO] quilts:
The living room and amaryllis:
Bowls of hearts, collected, ones I thought too shabby to sell.
Vintage glass containers, I use on bathroom counter for my bracelets and scrunchies and ChapStick.
Mo is decked out in his reflective snood / ear warmer w appliqued wool heart. [made by friend Mel].
Of course he gets Valentine prezzies!
And I made a doll outfit for my little friend's beginner's AG doll.
The planning of the outfits is so fun!
Prim brown hearts:
These inspired me on IG. So charming and simple. I especially like the larger size and new to me shape of the hearts.
My set is not as prim, sadly. I struggle w ''prim''--and they are not completed yet. I will add or show you next post.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Happy Valentine's Day, dear friends and readers.
love

gone to the beach....
Happy Valentine's Day Lizzy and Mo:)))
ReplyDeleteI can remember getting and sending Valentine's Day cards to all my fellow classmates--[teacher:" you must send one to everyone!!"] and my favorite little candy hearts with the sentiments on them...Dad always got Mom red flowers,,, not roses as they were "out of sight expensive"...mostly carnations...
and they lasted so long...and we'd all wear some piece of clothing that was red...so long ago now..
.hugs and hope that the ice storms will miss us...Julierose
You have a wonderful collection of hearts, Lizzy. I especially like the brown, red, and white quilt and the other little one with red heart blocks, and the heart hanging on the door. Very sweet. How sad your ex-husband was so mean.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing outfit for your little friend's doll.
I hope you stay warm and safe through the gale (if you get one) or that it bypasses you.
I don't recall any big Valentine's Day celebrations since the childhood class parties with our hand-decorated cereal box "mailboxes" for our little exchange Valentine's. It's never been more than any other day around here. I did love seeing your little valentine quilts, especially the one with the white background and light blue in the background. And those brown prim hearts, love the brown 🤎 must make up a pattern and try a couple for myself one day! Your little friend is a very lucky girl, her dolly is going to be the best dressed doll in town, your little dress is beautiful! Hope the gale doesn't get too bad there, we're now back to snow covered ice everywhere, it's treacherous to go outside around here, spring can't come soon enough for our liking.
ReplyDeleteOur grandson had his first preschool Valentine’s Day yesterday and was so excited to go through his bag of cards and treats after school. He even made a heart for each of us with his lovely four year old writing 🥰
ReplyDeleteValentine's Day was fun because it was my parent's wedding anniversary. My dad always bought roses for each year they were married and then once they hit 24 years he stayed with a dozen each year. He would buy the little heart shaped box of chocolates by Whitman, I think, and take the chocolates out and refill them with M & M's for my sister and me. Do you remember kicking Valentine's because he would ring the doorbell and when we went to the door we would find the little heart boxes on the doorstep. We always knew it was dad - good memories. One day, as an adult, I wondered what he did with those chocolates and figured he and Mom ate them all. As kids, we would rather have the M&M's anyway.
ReplyDeleteHello! First time here. Your heart collection has reminded me to walk down the hallway and take a photo of one of the quilted wall hangings my mom made; this one with hearts.
ReplyDeleteHi! Welcome. If you post a pic of your mom's heart quilt, let me know. I d love to see it.
