Garden Peeping Looking for Fall

and a new book!

Hi everyone! Today is beautifully summery after 4 whole days of winter storm. Yes winter briefly came to the beach, very cold and gale winds. Not sure if it was a remnant of H Ian, because tropical storms are usually warm and humid and move fast. I wore a down parka for four days under a long rain slicker, Mo dressed the same. Today is ice cream as usual on the deck though, so I am hopeful. Blog friend Nancy has a lovely post today about how the seasons merge and evolve slowly, it is not like we wake up October first and Fall is HERE.

This is my newest used book find. As you may recall just about the only hardcover books I buy are seasonal and nature guides for my collection [and a few cookbooks, I admit]. This is a beautifully illustrated children's book, though I truly do not see how one would use it as a learning or even ''getting them interested'' sort of read.

Apropos as the sky lately has been busy with skeins of geese and ducks.

The illustrations, linocut and perhaps gouache? are lovely for an adult to study.

Fairy toadstools for blog friend Julierose who beautifully used them in a journaling challenge page.

another artist, IG. 'Shrooms seem to be a current fad.

Garden peeping  afternoon walks with Mo, looking for hints of  autumn.

Fall roses and rose hips. These are cultivated beach roses, not wild dune roses.

Lovely that they bloom through til December.

Lovely pink coneflowers finally in bloom after a bit of rain.

The ubiquitous hydrangeas, mostly interesting as the colors change, since I have few trees for fall color.

Grasses....

Fairy moss gardens with [my] faux mushrooms.

The ugly locust trees with many clacking pods.

I had been so worried about Mr Mockingbird who rules his roost in fall and winter, from the top of this tree. For weeks I have been seeing grey feathers--oh no, did a cat or raccoon get him? Old age? Today he was back, singing away. I notice he is turning quite white---do birds get ''grey'' hair? [I looked up the lost feathers, it seems songbirds do molt in late summer, so all is well with my little elderly friend.]

Last week's nature sketch:

And a memory page for me and Mo.

A bit of rainy day Christmas gift sewing. It was so fun to start something new and tiny.

  1. Just loving the Fairy Moss Garden with the faux mushrooms...I am happy you liked my Mushroom journal page--it was a fun project.
    I love your Journal pages--so evocative ;)))
No roses left here, but a few rose hips on my straggling bushes which must be tied up before Winter storms...
Happy to hear that Monsieur Mocking bird is okay...hoping for a lovely Early Fall weekend...
    hugs, Julierose
My system is beginning to come back to a bit of normalcy--but these 2 shots at the same time really shocked my aging body!!

  2. Your new book would be so inspirational if I was more into applique, those illustrations are gorgeous. As it is there is barely any time for any kind of stitching, much less the slow applique kind. We finally had two consecutive clear warm days, a blessing. Finally was able to cut back some of the frosted perennials and begin tidying up the yard a bit. A lot of color on the hills now, so beautiful and so fleeting. Enjoying it while we can.

  4. I have to say, your honey locust tree looks an awful lot like our honey locust trees. Maybe they all grow about the same way even though they're different species?
The hydrangeas are so beautiful. Such luscious colors.
Outside Your Window is such a sweet book. There's a lot to look at for both children and adults, I think. Does it seem like it was a school book, one used in the classroom?
Did you make your fairy moss garden with real moss? How do you keep it alive and what is it planted in? I've thought about planting moss in a covered glass jar and bringing it inside for the winter. A terrarium, I guess? Our winters are so dry, I'm not sure I could keep it alive.
So glad Mr. Mockingbird is okay. Some of us tend to become attached to the creatures we see regularly outside, even if they are wild.
I'll have to look for Dogsters ice cream. The fellow on the right looks a lot like an Airedale to me, or perhaps a wire-haired fox terrier.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you create with those little blocks.

  5. Fall came on pretty fast hear, but we are still having upper 70's daytime temps. It has been beautiful!

  6. I'm glad you survived the storm, and surprised it was so cold! We are having more of a traditional "Fall" here, a slow cooling-off of the temperatures. Many years it has gone suddenly from HOT summer to really chilly early winter with almost nothing in between, so I am enjoying this. The pollen count has even been lower which is especially nice!

I love all the flower pictures! My favorite is the wild roses. I really enjoy your 'garden peeping' walks, seeing a few things you see. It feels almost like I went along for the walk!
