Miscellaneous March ~ Found Objects and Spring Flowers Emerge from The Snow

Hi everyone! Is it cold at your house? High winds and frigid temps here at the beach. No amount of sunshine can make the weather more tolerable. The other night I finished some tax prep and opened Blogger  to do this post, and BOOM, the lights went out. Blackout. No warnings, no wind alerts, no storms; I was totally unprepared, though I did have prepared food. But low batteries everywhere, pretty late at night and oh so dark. Usually a clear storm breaks down my wifi and landline phone, but not a total blackout.

Hard to know what to do; finally got out all the stored comforters and decided to huddle underneath til dawn. Baby Mo was wrapped in many layers in his own bed. If things got really cold I'd make him come up on the bed. But he seemed happy. [Temperature 24 degrees/ windchill about 13*, wind 30 plus mph.]

Just as I crawled under all the quilts and blankets, Bang! the lights returned. Saved, yay!

Mo is currently enjoying his winter coats, so we do go on out. Looking for first daffodil shoots. Here they are, peeking out of the old dirty snow as it melted .

And I've been keeping a sharp eye out for weird collection items that emerge from the snow. Washers, coins, tiny Christmas trees in Lucite and glitter! A little yellow looped key?

I thought the this was a Lego People head. But no.

I like finding Canadian pennies. They are pretty.

We've seen a number of St Paddy's Day wreaths and door decorations, but I'm especially loving all the newly hung out seashell wreaths. Everyone is ready for summer days. And I've been noticing these interesting tall lanterns, set out on front steps or in front gardens, usually with a faux pillar candle, presumably on a timer. They are pretty big, higher than my knee--30"? We love the warm glow in the darkness.

This lantern has especially attracted my notice. Looks very "Home Goods" and it has a candle, plus the base is filled with a small collection of special seashells. But wouldn't it make such a cute little storage cupboard for some of my tiny quilts. I am always tempted to leave a note....

Back inside, I'm filling the cottage with inexpensive spring flowers each week. Dear daffys from Ireland, 2 bunches for 3.oo.

And primroses, a favorite of my dad's. He'd plant them in a wicker basket with green moss from his woods, for the Easter table. Maybe a few Easter Eggs or a china bunny or ladybug from the dump Swap Shop, tucked in too.

I've been picturing this metal planter filled with spring flowers ever since I got it a few years ago. Next summer, it should have red geraniums, I hope.

Many of you asked how my second Crockpot recipe came out: Braised Beef with Mushrooms. No vegs. It was very delicious! I listened to friends who are excellent cooks; everyone insisted I must pre-brown the meat. I also pre-sautéed the mushrooms in butter. Served on wide noodles, my favorite pappardelli, with a dollop of sour cream.  Butter/honey glazed baby carrots and Brussel sprouts on the side.

Below, unusual especially in winter, heirloom tomatoes at my grocery store. So pretty.

Edit: today's crock pot attempt was my Fast Chili. I cooked it 2 hours on high and 4 or 5 on low. Smelled great, but is watery and undercooked. Disappointing.

  1. Commiserations on the blackout. We have them frequently and the good old paraffin lamps are lit and give a soft, warm light (which isn't the brightest, compared to the LED lights}.
Your primulas are a joy, especially the one with the margin on the edge.
I do enjoy your melted snow treasures.
    Keep warm.

  2. Those daffodils look so bright and cheerful, and a great price too! Very cold here this morning, 3 degrees when we got up, all the way up to 22 now - heatwave!

  3. Your found objects are all so interesting--I wonder what their "back stories" are? Especially that little turn key...
Pretty daffodils...and lovely tin of bloomers you have going...
My papershites are sending up shoots now--the pot they included is way too small--I will have to try to re-pot them before they get any bigger...the little daffs are fading--but still pretty--that little touch of Springtime yellow...
Take care--hope your blackout woes are over--
    still cold...hugs, Julierose

  4. Sorry you're still having such cold weather! And the sudden blackout sounded upsetting! If no storm I wonder if someone took out a power pole somewhere. I'm glad you got your power back!

It's nice here - 69*F today at 1pm! I kept seeing people out in t-shirts and shorts! It felt pretty good, but last night I was freezing even though it wasn't that cold in the house; I'd like to know what my problem is!

Such pretty flowers! I'm tempted whenever I see bunches in stores, but the cats would manage to destroy them about 5 minutes after I brought them in the house so I don't get any.

A show I was watching on YouTube said that backyard gardening was reaching levels of popularity the highest since the 'Victory Gardens' of the WW2 years. Everyone has cabin fever and wants to do something outside, I guess. And fresh salad stuff without having to brave the supermarket has some appeal, too.

Love your found objects. The little 'key' thing is actually a terminal end to go on a wire - the yellow part hides the part that gets crimped to hold it to the wire.

Leave a note about the big candle lantern! I can't see any reason why it would upset the owners, and knowing someone else thought it was lovely might make their day.

Lovely heirloom tomatoes! I never see anything like that in our little grocery. Did you get any? I've heard some of them taste a lot better than modern hybrids! Makes me want a cheese and tomato sandwich, lol!

I always enjoy your posts, they give me something to look forward to - a peek at what you've been up to!

Take care, and I hope it warms up for you soon!

  5. Surprise surprise when the power goes out with no flickers or obvious reason. Glad you weren't fast asleep when it came back on!
The yellow "found" piece is a terminal for wiring. We sell than at our store.

  6. Enjoyed my stroll with you. Daffodils and flowers in general make the chilly temps bearable. Hope springs eternal.

  7. Eeeek! No power! And, dang, it was COLD! Glad it was resolved rather quickly. We're having rain this week, and our landline was out this evening, and the internet has been spotty. I'm hoping it doesn't go out again as I write this!

The primroses in the metal planter are so pretty. It's a perfect match. The red geraniums will be pretty, too. I still have the hyacinth blooming in the yard, and calla lilly, too. On our walk earlier, we could smell freesias!

The little lucite trees are intetesting. How/where were they found?

Heirloom tomatoes this time of year!? Did you bring any home?

Oh, that lantern cabinet would be a great display for your tiny quilts.

    Stay well,and warm ;)

  8. We have more random blackouts than we used to. So annoying! Glad you were safe and warm overall. Love seeing your found items and of course, your cheery spring flowers!

  9. Hello my friend by the sea! Bummer about the blackout. We had squirrel blow a transformer behind our house and I had to call the company. We lost power for a half hour. I felt sorry for the squirrel. Love your primroses. And your daffs. I am off to prune my maple tree. Have a great weekend! Kit

  10. You find such fun things on the beach and your flowers are beautiful. Spring despite cold weather and winds. I hope the weather is better this week than last.

  11. What lovely flowers. Did the Daffodils REALLY come from IRELAND?! All that way?

What odd finds from the snow. Here we would just get puddles and mud when it melted . . .

I like the seashell display in the bottom of that lantern. Hope you can find a similar one for your tiny quilt display.

    1. Hi! Yes the Daffs seem to be a gbig export crop from Ireland tho I admit I didn't read the tag this year.

Where I live we have no soil only beach sand, so no mud or puddles much, but if there is any, Mo the Pug finds it!

I ll be looking for a little lantern or cupboard.
