Deja vu All Over Again

Hi everyone! Good evening! Oh what a difference a day makes. Yesterday was beautifully sunny, 37*--- the roads and walkways finally shoveled, plowed and dry.

Mo and I had two long wonderful walks enjoying the fresh winter air. We even went to Mo's beach bench, though sadly it was behind a big snowdrift. Mo was happy to do his tricks on the dry pavement instead.

Then today:

It is actually a beautiful snow, but who wants it?! Not us. Arctic cold to follow, brrr.

Mo was content to play briefly on the deck. I finally had been able to open the door enough to squeeze out and do some shoveling for him.

In bad weather we play a modified Pug Fetch. I sit at my computer, and throw a treat as FAAAR into the living room as I can. Mo finds it, eats the treat, and runs back to me. For some reason he refuses to fetch a toy.

And Jeep Roadside Assistance came yesterday morning, quite promptly, and started my car. My friend has driven it for me twice now, but honestly, I do not trust it anymore.

Working indoors today, I decided to mostly ignore house chores and we spent the day in my sewing room. Here is the view looking out past my cutting table.

Now at 5 PM there's a slight clearing and the storm is ending. The snow-frosted trees are glowing an ethereal pink, so beautiful.

I worked on hearts for my etsy shop. I make them year round, though I do regret not having more to offer for Valentine's day.

I made the pattern try-out for Blue Pineapples. And glad I did because refinements and changes were quite needed.

Here is the machine appliqued/ straight stitch leafy top. I like to do a straight stitch sometimes because, when washed, the cut edge frays softly and creates textures and dimension.

First of all the thread I ordered is horrible and much too dark. I hope I can made do with my small spools I use for hand applique, the only green thread I have.

Other issues---easily fixed, the corners were hard to square up. Better to cut a blue rectangle and put notches, then sew/ press/ trim.

And the green topper and the blue body didn't fit exactly.

I also considered  using the pieced topper from Baby Ps. It looks good, but this is supposed to be a deck throw/ beach blanket, not a work of quilting art.

Focus on function! I told myself.

Remember the showcase the gorgeous blue batiks.

Keep it modern and casual.

OK!

And I couldn't resist starting to piece the eBay antique Wagon Wheel blocks. I love them! Spacers to make the three across wider/ and five down. 33" x 45", plus possible borders.

I will not fix the crooked cheddar rims or not-round center circles. The piecing [as opposed to the applique] of the spokes is beautiful. Most perfect tiny even hand stitches. I'll show you next time.

                                                                         *

Cold weather is coming! I also did the alterations on Mo's newest parka. It had enough Velcro to close a snowsuit for a plus sized human skier. I redid the fastenings for fast on/ fast off and trimmed away the tummy coverings so Mo could potty easily.

******************

Still eating leftover pot-roast! It is far better after a few days and slices nicely when cold, before reheating. Added gravy from a jar. The veggies were mostly discarded though.

Have a great week.

  2. We received about 6" of that white stuff!! Our trees are still heavy laden as it did get cold overnight...and more to come I hear ugh!!
I love your blue pineapple--nice to use bigger pieces of batiks so their patterns show up and i like the plain tops which should fray nicely...very pretty;)))
That old quilt is amazing--I am happy to hear you are not going to re-do the cheddar--I like how it looks in the original a lot...great idea to add the red spacers...what a lovely, warm looking piece that will be...
Stay warm and safe..we are going to try to go early morning food shopping tomorrow BEFORE the snow arrives...fingers crossed...

  3. I love those blue batiks for your new pineapple quilt! Maybe a variety of pieced and appliqued tops for some added interest? They both look good. And those antique wagon wheel blocks are just so charming! Re the veggies turning to mush in the crockpot, when we make a stew or pot roast we cut up the veggies and toss them with just a bit of olive oil and herbs, then wrap them tightly in a foil package and place on top of the meat in the crockpot. About 10 minutes before serving carefully unwrap the package and dump the veggies into the stew. They've always turned out perfectly that way. Hope that will work for you too.

  4. I am not sure about what the problem might be with your car--but year ago I had a car that would not start when it got below 30 and I had to always get it jumped--then one day at a gas station I decided to put in a can of 'dry gas' and filled up my tank--and guess what--it started every time--not matte how cold it got--so I always put a can in before each bad winter storm--(and the guys who came to jump start my car never told me-not even my Dad who was good with cars--!!) I don't even know if they make the 'dry gas' anymore--but it might be worth looking into it and trying it--I do know cars have changed alot since those days!
Love the pineapples and those wagon wheels are really neat--
    luv,di

  5. I hope you didn't get TOO much more snow!

Actually we got a bit yesterday/last night, too - just enough to turn the ground white. This morning we had a freezing drizzle that was pretty, but really annoying to drive in as it froze onto the windshield immediately! I could see through it if there was no lights (no oncoming cars) but if a light was shining on it all I could see was the frost effect! I was glad I didn't have to drive very far. It's still cold and dreary out - it was 8* out when I got up and a whole 10* now! Brr, Brr, Brr!

I like both tops for the blue pineapples so I'm no help, lol. And the wagon wheels are very cute!

Glad you and Mo got out some yesterday, anyway. Hopefully the cold/snowy weather won't last too long!

Love the cloud picture with pink and blue clouds!!

I liked QB's idea for the veggies in a crockpot. We always just added them later.

    Stay warm!!

  6. I really enjoy your relaxed, laid back pineapples. The raw edge stitching works well on the single piece of fabric you chose for the leaves. I'm all for letting beautiful fabrics shine as you've done.
Mo's hilarious exercise regime is so deviously clever. Well done!!
Great idea to put veg in foil, QB. One learns something new every day.
Thank you for the super beach and bird shots, especially good old Gully.
    Keep warm.

  7. That's so cute, modified fetch with Mo. Whatever it takes, right? I love the blues you are using for your pineapples and it is really thinking creatively and beautifully to use blue for pineapples! And the wagon wheels are terrific too.

  8. I love the shape of your first pineapple. Hope you get it all figured out successfully! And I adore your wheel blocks, including the imperfection.:)

  9. It's soooo weird to see those winter scenes! They are beautiful. I think I would enjoy it for a few days, but not for an extended period of time. Good to hear you and Mo are getting out.

Isn't it the worst to lose trust in your car, ugh. It adds such anxiety to even short drives. I hope the situation is resolved one way or another.

Oooooh, good tip from QB regarding veg in the slow cooker.

Vaccination appointment pic? :( Hoping for more options soon.

    Be well :)
