Mo Has a Playdate

Hi everyone! We're home! Mo was invited for a doggy playdate today.

Mo is an unusually active and athletic pug. Mo likes to run! And he's a furry little Houdini, who has never met a harness or collar that he cannot escape. We haven't been going to the dog park lately because it is very expensive to park there and it's too far to walk. So a few weeks ago I took Mo to a public area with lovely grass, fenced and hedged--- so he could enjoy a run on the cool grass. Ha! Mo yanked his leash out of my hand, tore through the hedge, dislodged his harness---and leaped the fence to freedom.

Born Free!

He raced down our six-lane, 45 mph road at rush hour with me in pursuit, cars swerving and honking. I was so frightened. He ran about a half mile, almost to the back entrance of the dog park. He stopped finally, heard me calling him. Yes he came back, but in the road still. No more outing treats for Mo.

I ordered a no-escape harness for him. It came today. He's so chubby that the Large won't close over his belly. [vet says his weight is fine, he's just a big boy.]

So my friend was kind enough to invite us over to her home so Mo could play in her luxurious grass.

Sprinklers on!

This is her big dog, an exotic, to me anyway, Louisiana Leopard Dog.

He is dark brindle brown with slightly lighter spots, very unusual coat. Oscar doesn't much like Mo, but he was a tolerant host.

And this is Brutus, my friend's grand-dog. Brutus is a teeny tiny, elderly but spry Maltese terrier. He's too elegant to play or run but Mo enjoyed making friends.

Mo especially loves the back wall with its rows of pines and hosta and mulch. He thinks he is a little lion dog. And we desperately hoped the fence has no holes. It was just redone after H.Sandy so it's sturdy and I think maybe 8 feet high.

Even Mo can't jump over that fence.

Here's Mo investigating the garden shed.

And checking out the little Buddha in the corner. I was so pleased he didn't lift his leg there.

Poor Oscar requires a muzzle and constant vigilance, so we couldn't sit and sip our ice tea like playground moms do. Too bad.
But Mo had a good run and maybe he'll get invited back someday.

Sunflowers from other friends' garden, aren't they the  BEST!? This was just one seed package, ''assorted hybrids." From Burpee I think. Wow.

    1. When I was a tiny girl in rural-ish Ohio, dogs weren t leashed, they just hung out freely. And now and then one would be a car chaser. That d be Mo, he d chase cars if he could.

  2. That little Mo is a BIG handful! "Oscar was a tolerant host" made me LOL Maybe after a few dates he will warm up to Mo. The rabbits ate all my sunflower starts. :(

  3. I'm glad you got to let Mo run somewhere safe. I can't believe a dog park had a fence short enough for MO to jump over! Very scary! Maybe he needs a straightjacket instead of a harness, LOL. Can the escape-proof one get the one strap lengthened? Sew another bit on really well so it'll close around him? I hope so, to give you a little more peace of mind. Good thing you've got great friends in the meantime. Very nice yard, and beautiful sunflowers! Thanks for sharing your day!

    1. We werent at the dog park, tho that fence is maybe only 5 feet high. This was an area nearby---..the fence is maybe 4 feet but there was a berm area that Mo used as a launching pad. I hadn t seen the berm behind the hedges.

I ll order the next size of harness and see if it fits w/out being loose. Otherwise, yes, I can extend the belly band, black cotton will be fine. I send you a picture...

  4. Oh jeeze, that dog is going to give you a heart attack one day! What a relief that things turned out ok. Little escape artist indeed. :)

The sunflowers are wonderful. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that we're far enough into summer that all of these flowers and vegetables are blooming and ripening.

    1. I kept thinking of your neighbors whose dog escaped and was killed on the road. Heart attack indeed, it was 90* at least, to hot for me to run down the road.

It s summer! Maybe your drought is making it seem not summery?

    2. Oh gosh, try not to worry over Mo too much. I've a feeling he is leading a charmed life. It's good that you're learning from all of his escapades though and making changes to avoid future incidents, you're a good Mom :)

I think I just have too much on my plate right now to be able to enjoy the season, but you're right, the drought does probably play a part as well.

      Enjoy the weekend!
