Hello! What a gorgeous day to welcome the weekend. Memorial Day , last week, was a rainy washout, but this looks so good! The wild roses are thriving. Honeysuckle and sweetpea should add to the perfumed air this coming week. The scent of early summer, if we could capture it and bottle it somehow.
And the beaches are actually open, if not very utilized.
And! We have whales. Young ones , fairly close to shore. [these are local news screenshots, I didn't see them myself].
I like whales but not sure I want to actually swim with them, tho I am told they're gentle. They just want to play!
Lots of baby birds. This pic is from a friend as he golfed the other morning.
Mostly I did house chores and sewed on Boardwalk. Inspiration pic to remind you, below. I was esp pleased to complete the odd fill-in vertical bars on the left. They actually set up the entire central portion, so they were essential if not interesting.
.......................
The weather forecast for the next few weeks looks good! And I always like to have some handwork to bring out on the deck. Sadly carrying on without my little Mo to keep me organized.
I cut more Posies and pieced a few.
I' ll needleturn the big center circles. I had planned to do solid cheddar centers, but how boring is that. Instead I pulled an assorted group of batiks. Nice hand and visual textures. Most will be this cheddar.
I also found enough chartreuse polka dot fabric for the leaves; my leaves are bigger than JP's pattern leaves.
And--Yes the fabric choices and colors are getting crazy.
Here is the original inspiration crib quilt. I may still make it someday, I do love it.
But lots of fun other prints are sneaking in. Why not? It's an homage to a time of great joy for me, replacing tears with smiles. This quilt is commemorating my small but loudly colorful deck garden and my many hours years spent sewing there with Baby Mo. So the colors are exuberant. Eye popping. Trust me, they'll work!
.................................................
I also pulled out an unfinished Lighthouse block, maybe it's time to finish these? Ancient. 90s? early 2000s? I used to make a block every August when I'd go ''home'' to Cape Cod. Only lighthouses I actually visited were allowed. This is Cape Cod Light, also called Highland Light. It's on the east coast just north of Nauset Light.
Ok! That's a few days' work planned.
...........................................
Last night, last minute, I decided my new little drinks basket-tray needed a liner. Full moon tomorrow, will it be a Full Moon Cheers/ Welcome Summer night? Or should we wait for, um, July?
First version---Ooops. Rushing. Sewing at midnight, my happy time. Roughly patched together batting remnants made for lumpy ugly results. It seemed like a Fail.
I set it aside and was going to toss it or make a mug rug....
...but today I added a lot of machine quilting--the only freestyle quilting I do at all well. Waves aka Wavy Gravy.
Yes! So cute and so nicely scrunched after a good wash w the day's laundry.
It will be trimmed to fit and edged with either the red gingham bias [too picnic?] or crisp white ric rac [too cutesy?]. No one but me will notice or care.
Unlike BW that I labor over, this is a true improv piece.
.............................................................
A ''big'' summer sew on the deck/beach plan has been the intention to sew the bindings on quilts I sent last winter to my wonderful quilter. [Noah's Ark, Jack o Lanterns, Grey Baskets, Christmas mini: all of 2025's work]. But life happens, there's a delay and at this point I am fine with waiting til the time is good for Lori C. Her work is well worth any wait.

Garden is doing well, two or three weeks in.
Today these beautiful blue flowers appeared. Volunteers or reseed. I think they're Flax, but the phone plant id app says "Baby Blue-eyes" ?
Hope your weekend is wonderful, enjoy!

lizzy
gone to the beach...
this time, last year....

I just love your fabrics pulled and sewn for your Posies, Lizzy--I just love how it is coming along...your blocks remind me of your zinnia seed packet pix a lot!!;))) Great cheddar for the centers...I haven't decided on my centers as yet--we'll see...perhaps a polka dotty one...???
ReplyDeleteI love that lighthouse piece...well worth finishing...and the improv basket liner came out wonderfully..
Is it really windy out there--it is like a gale force
and constant here...temp down to 46 !! Maybe the last bit of Winter blowing in from Canada...
Stay warm...hugs, Julierose
Thanks! I think polka dot centers would be darling. My version really needs those centers to make the Posies" work". I'm starting tee shirt prep today--too windy, AGAIN to enjoy being out walking. Or window washing. Reminding myself it's better than heat wave, but brrrr.
DeleteSomeday I'll locate the other Lighthouse blocks and show them off. They're fun. Just found two in NYC to add.Lots of embroidery tho, bummer.
hope all is well.
I love this joy-filled post, Posies and zinnias seed packet just make my heart sing. The Posies blocks are turning out gorgeous, and the star-filled center circle really adds a lot of personality. You are having the early summer typically seen around here, us not so much. Cold, cloudy and extremely windy. We've had to have the heat on and quilts on us when sitting on the recliners. Not much incentive to get out and work in the garden, not that I had much anyway, the fatigue is generalized and nearly constant. But hopefully better days are coming.
ReplyDeleteHa! The forecast was misleading as it was for greater NYC area; cold grey and gale winds here. Hints of sunshine. Our version of spring.
DeleteWhat a lovely post once again, so many pretty things to see, your fabrics are colourful and joyous and your posies are looking just like the seed packets, a riotous summer show of floral abundance. I don't usually like improv pieces, they seem too sloppy and unfinished to my eye, but your little liner is an exception - very nice. Good to have a little reminder of Mo, photo's keep our memories fresh. I live near the beach in England but ours is not as beautiful as yours, I love the boardwalk, and your little blue flower is native to your country so not much chance of a bird bringing one of those to my garden! Be happy, love from Elaine in UK.
ReplyDeleteHi! I don't think a bird brought the Baby
DeleteBlue Eyes wildflower here either--it's thousands of miles. Prob a seed pack surprise, tho I always buy wildflowers native to the US East Coast. They're so pretty tho. Blue as the sky.
I love the look of a good improv quilt, it takes skills! I'm not so good at it but I like a challenge, learn something new.
I'm glad you enjoyed a pic of Mo, yes he is missed. His adoption day is June 8, a special day; we always celebrated. I was so proud of that baby flying here all alone, popped out of plane happy as can be. Good times.
I imagine your beach is beautiful too, they vary so much, even day to day.
love
lizzy
PS It is almost as far from here on the east coast to N California (3000 mi) as it is to UK. (3500 mi)---and birds mostly fly north to south. With prevailing winds it's actually more likely a bird would fly wrong and end up in England than fly west to CA. [me being nature nerdy, oops :-) ]
DeleteHi Lizzy, this brought a smile to my face this morning - I forgot how absolutely huge America is!! I'll keep looking in hope for some little blue flowers then. love & hugs from Elaine across the pond......
DeleteYour beach roses are such a treat. So much to see and wonder at on/near your beach - whales, birds plus ROSES.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving your posies. They're a wonderful interpretation of the festive seed packets. Enlarging the leaves is a good idea. I also enjoy the way the starry centres are just there and don't jump out and hit you between the eyes!
I think your blue and white flowers are Nemophila, Baby Blue Eyes. Beautiful native to California apparently.
Don't beat yourself up about your tray quilt. I'm swooning at the backing, apart from the jolly front!
Thank you for the pic of the dear boy at the end of your blog. It would be wonderful to keep posting one of him there, as you have such fun ones, like the fabric container and blossom shots. Pennyxx
Thanks! Posies is fun! I'll email more, I know I owe you a reply or two. I have to do tee shirt alterations now, must stick to my plans as Mo is not here to manage my time.
Deletepretty posies...i am a massachusetts gal too...
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful diverse state. I always loved summers--Augusts--there.[ even tho my own beach is ''better''/ bigger , lol.] I'd have to plan visits around the tide charts, Cape Bay beaches are wonderful for toddlers---but there's sometimes no water. Brewster flats for miles. My kids were baffled and appalled. And my ex husband and I dreamed of a weekend home, barn reno? 1800s homestead?---in the Berkshires.
DeleteAnother gorgeous post. You have combined the look of wildflower prousion to make your "Posies" blocks. So so colorful. Boardwalk really has that novice feel that an Improv quilt should have. I'd be tempted to cut some bias tape from your stash for that cute liner.
ReplyDelete"profusion"
Delete[I knew what your meant!] Hi! THe liner binding? DInce making doll clothes I have come to greatly appreciate double fold premade bias binding. I found some white to easily finish the circle,. The pre made binding is great for fast not fancy or heirloom edging. I ll show you all next post.
Deletelizzy
Oh to see whales
ReplyDeleteAlways a thrill--as long as they're not swimming right next to me.
DeleteI love those posies. After so much machine piecing, I might be ready for a big appliqué project
ReplyDeleteI love hand sewing, so I always look forward to applique projects in the bright light light of summer .[vision issues]. I have a couple in mind, but of course I'm the world's slowest sewer. And Posies will be a fun mix of techniques.
DeletePS Your Bible Quilt that you donated and Lori finished is sooo beautiful. Are you sad you gave it away? I can't wait to buy raffle tickets, what if I won! I never do...
