MAY

Hi! It's May! May, yes it's  May. Don't get me wrong---here at the Beach,  May is still spring---cold grey, windy, depressing. Rain, rain. But a tulip blooms and hope springs eternal. May is better than February. Maybe.

Yesterday on my walk I noticed that the few ornamental trees , planted years ago in the common area near my home, have overnight burst into leaf and bloom. The red leafed black cherry has , well, green leaves, where a day ago it was barren.

The ancient peach tree and crabapple have bloomed, the winds  scattering Mo's much loved pink snow [petals].

The giant dwarf  Japanese maple has abundant burgundy red leaves; even the ugly locust has knobs of green budding leaves and the chittering squirrel is back.

.

I'm not fooled though! My flannel sheets went back on the bed. I did finally change out Winter Marsh quilt for this lovely pink make-do, a fave of mine.

I call this quilt block Chimney Sweep or Album Block.

Juliann has an interesting post with another version called Granny Squares, inspired by crocheted afghans. Blog post link: HERE

With trepidation and sadness I'm starting to plan my deck's container garden.

I'm being brave and carrying on but this may be my last effort to garden [and sew]. Sewing Hour just won't be the same without Mo,

We had twelve summers together--it started because I had a severe pain flare up summer of  2016, could barely walk/ no beach or swim etc.  I created a routine indulging his Pug mindset that so loved a strict routine--out at 3--he'd see me make his bowl of ice water and prepping the sewing box. Then we'd set up, gentle play time, brush his  copious fur, reward of small jerky chew then nap while mom sewed with occasional alerts of gulls or helicopters overhead. We'd be so quiet, what a joy--visits by bumblebees, hummingbirds, butterflies, ladybirds. The sparrows. all noted later in my scribble journal

Then, ice cream, just a spoonful, was delivered at 4.30 in his special snowman bowl. He'd see that bowl and just be so excited, he'd wiggle all over. When clearing away his things, I just could not discard that little bowl. By five-ish we'd head indoors, a rest [yes again], then dinner and walkies as the hot summer day cooled down. Pugs adore routine and can tell time--variations were greeted with sulks and refusals. Heaven forbid dinner was late! But also--he'd scorn his food bowl until 5.30 on the dot.

I had a dream about Mo the other night, he was glaring at me, in his special  communicative way and his mental telepathy voice in my head, whined:

"Mommy I do not want a damn bracelet, I wants treats and my own bed!" It made me realise what a useless gesture the memorial bracelet is,  it's just for me. Self-indulgent.

Oh no, heaven is not measuring up??

I made quite a bit of progress on the Boardwalk strips. This most recent batch is, I think, successful, finally. It's pretty!

I'm pleased! I think I have captured the feel of the original. [the blue plaid at the bottom front is another quilt]

 Inspiration quilt, no pattern.

I laid it all out on my bed

and took notes, made a list of the next steps, since I will be out of service next week to ten days due to my bimonthly medical infusion treatment. I hope I remember what the notes mean, lol.

And still waiting for a different background fabric/ yardage for Posies.

********************

I did some food prep  yesterday and today. Made a big casserole in my Le Creuset pot. A silly but easy to eat comfort food, my grandma always made it for me when we'd visit. Something that said Love after the long tedious drive. [my dad would drop us off and go hunting or sailing w my uncle...] She called it goulash, much to my mom's annoyance. My mom made a gourmet Hungarian goulash w sweet paprika, and so dubbed Grandma's Hamburger Helper-ish food "Grandma's Dish": Ground beef, onion, pasta, can of whole tomatoes, water, herbs on stove top. A variation could have mushrooms and sour cream. Perfect kid food, or after medical day nourishment. (gets gloppy if overcooked w too much water, takes a focused cook to get it right)

I made salads too, in single serving containers: slaw and also Belgian endive w radishes and avocado, lemon vinaigrette. I do love the peppery crisp early spring vegs, this week's radishes are at their peak.

Back soon though. I want to get back to posting on Fridays. Do you have a certain day you prefer to read new posts. Like w Saturday AM coffee? Or...? Pls tell me?

A May Basket block from a British quilting mag, so pretty.

Have great weekend and enjoy May/ springtime [or fall, of course]

love

  2. Oh, dear Lizzy, how wonderful that I found your blog! I don't blog very often, I'm rarely at the computer, but I've been sewing with great joy for a few years now – before that I knitted.
Your new top is going to be beautiful, I love the colors and the stripes too!
I wish you lots of fun with your sewing and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
May here is incredibly beautiful – it's bringing out all the senses. All the best to you from Viola.
    Love.

  3. The Boardwak top looks great! It seems to be coming along quickly, too. Have you decided on a backing? Just curious - maybe you decided and I just forgot? There was a lot going on for the last couple weeks and I may have missed something.
It's supposed to be 80 today, even though it was in the 40s last night! I got my tiny little pond out finally - it was in the garage for 10 years or more! I have some goldfish and a few water plants - I'll send a Pic when it looks better. Today we are putting together a raised garden bed for a few veggies. The dogs decided to rip up the soil bags for us, not very helpful.
I know how much you miss Mo, he was a great companion for you. Keep doing what you love though! He may be watching!
Take care, we love reading your blog whenever!

    1. Hi! I haven't said what I ll use for BW backing, I have few ideas. Truly I didn't expect it to ever become a quilt, lol.
Did it get to 80? My brother in Ohio said it was so cold at the flea, tho of course that's far from you.
I messaged you a fun pond from IG. I hope your pond grows. Will the goldfish come indoors in he winter?
      Thanks for the encouragement.

  4. I love the pretty quilt you've exchanged for Winter Marsh. I've found I prefer the quilts with light or white backgrounds for my bed. I have a months worth of quilts in my closets but every time I put a quilt with minimal light background or a dark color on my bed - I'm just not satisfied. Silly, I know. The Boardwalk quilt is really coming together. I'm so glad it's looking like the vision you have for it. Such reassuring shades of blue. The blooming trees look wonderful. Spring is such a season of hope. My SIL was devastated by the death of her little downs son. She bought a necklace and wears it all the time. I notice her rubbing the pendant when we visit. I think the bracelet is that kind of thing for you.

    2. ;Isn't the basket pretty. Sadly so far the other blocks aren't as good. I'll do a post about the magazines soon.

    3. Thanks about the memorial bracelet being okay.

Funny to only like white quilts. I'm pretty happy with any colors, tho only now can i use darks bec Mo shed so much. I only don't those early 80's quilts in dusty rose burgundy, pine green--and I m not fond of hexagons [that phobia of repeated patterns alert, plus the excruciating tedium]

  7. Any day is a good day to open a post from you my friend! Around here one day is the same as the other. I am so glad you persevered with the boardwalk quilt, it's going to be wonderful. I'm just surprised how quickly it has grown! May in these parts has been as cold as April.seems we're looking at the middle of the month before much improvement. Wishing you a smooth recovery from this next procedure.

  8. Hello Lizzy, I read your blog no matter which day it is - I just look out for you to post. Your pics are gently different to other blogs, it's like a little holiday seeing the sand and sea and trees around you, very beautiful, thank you. I know you miss little Mo, I certainly miss seeing him but memories are precious and never leave us. He'll always be with you. Love the quilt on the bed, thanks for taking time to write, trust all goes well in the next week or so, love and hugs, Elaine in UK

    1. Hi Elaine. Thanks so much. Treatment did go okay, I'm doing well. The quilt on the bed was a mis-sewn, misshapen top, with tatters and parts of the pink ground missing. And not very clean. But--oooh, pink! I leave make do quilts in as original condition as possible [some quilters remake the entire quilt]; but I had to reshape this one and add similar tiny pink dot sashing. Then quilted by my lovely quilter Lori C. It also was enough for a sweet little doll quilt! Thanks for your sweet comments about Mo, too.

  9. I'm sure you could set your clock by dear Mo's routine - such time sticklers. Abby, our ancient pug-russell is just the same. A little time tyrant.
I could see your deck garden as a comforting sort of reminder of your little sewing supervisor. I smile, remembering his 'oh no, do I really have to wear this outfit Mom?'
Boardwalk looks so good on your bed. It's talking to me!! Very tempted to make one too. A wonderful way to use up small bits and play around with colour and tone which you've done superbly.
I agree with Robin about your bracelet. I'm very sentimental about jewellery and get great comfort from wearing pieces that have treasured associations, like some simple little pearl earrings of my Mum's, or a tiny emerald ring with ties to my daughter in Ireland. It's like using an old recipe from my late 100 yr old aunt. All precious. Penny

    1. Hi! I m so glad to hear Abby is still with you, sadly I think you lost your kitties recently tho. Aren't the pug/s/mixes funny w their time obsession.

It would be so fun if you made a Boardwalk too, let me know. I m happy to share more detailed dimensions of needed but You'd prob be as good as me with making it all work.
