Special note: I was deeply touched and comforted by so many sweet comments about Baby Mo. I never realized he was such a beloved feature of my blog. Thank you all so very much for your condolences. Today I have dense fog, cannot even see the dunes--and high wind warnings. You'd think the wind would blow the fog away but so far no.
Very chilly and wintry, but by way of keeping busy, spring cleaning has commenced in a lackluster sort of way.
March 17! The Oystercatchers should arrive.
I've been watching for them despite the fog. I assume they do not get lost.
I have been walking most days, trying to avoid [a hopeless endeavor] routes that Mo and I took daily for twelve years. Found another clump of snowdrops and maybe?? some daffodil sprouts.
This weekend I made a Minnie Mouse inspired doll outfit for my little friend who is going to Disney World for spring break.
I can't show it to her, as I luckily found out last night that the trip is a surprise. Oh I'd have spoiled everything. I don't know how her mom hides the planning and packing for a long trip, but she does.
Still have not chosen a new quilt project, though fiddling aimlessly with Boardwalk strips still. This is the inspiration pic, to remind you.
A boardwalk, if not The Boardwalk:
I'm also trying to catch up with my nature journaling.
My little July to December book was so neglected. Saved and sketched fall and winter leaves.
A blobby-, shapeless shell!
Layering images so does NOT work for me, what a mess. The pages need more thoughtful planning. Or ''skip, don't overfill'' the weeks/years?
I enjoy leaves, but--yawn?
Two issues for me with nature art journals are: if one doesn't draw and paint almost daily, all skills are lost. And my vision is so wonky---crooked flowers!, and my hands shake. See the correction?
So poor skills are setting me up for bad results. and Two: the barrenness of nature diversity here on my little sandbar island. I had hoped for some spring hikes to mainland nature areas for inspration and specimens but with ticks so prevalent, I get wary. Can't even pick up a bird feather or eggshell because of bird flu, huge warnings almost daily are posted
To jump start my interest and skills, I got this little workbook as a belated Christmas gift to myself. So sweet.
The book's outline drawings are so simple but so good.

Now, I just love your nature Journal drawings and watercoloring, Lizzy--not "yawn" at all-- you see what you see after all..shakey hands or no--I think it is still wonderful to be able to draw like you do..perfection is not the goal--rather the process?
ReplyDeleteI really am drawn to that "Boardwalk" piece--and think it could look great in all sorts of shades and colors...light Spring greens, pale apricots to oranges...and rusts...brick colors--ecrus, browns, light mushy golds...
just how you can imagine it...Maybe little spray of bleach to "weather" solids???
The wonky warped strips are so charming aren't they?
I often think of sweet Mo baby...and his cute little chubbiness...warm memories...;)))
Hugs, Julierose
Sweet tiny outfit for your little friend when she returns from her surprise trip, she'll love this for her dolly. We've had fake spring and now awaiting third winter later this evening, temperature is dropping like a rock. 3-6 inches of snow predicted by morning. I always love seeing your nature journals, the sketches are perfect in my eyes. I think doing them must be a lot like quilting, in that we're only inches away as we're creating and our eyes focus on our perceived errors rather than considering the work as a whole and how other folks will see them without any preconceived idea of how they should appear.
ReplyDeleteHope the snow was not too bad, got really cold here again.
DeleteYikes, how fortunate that you found out in time that the Disney trip is to be a surprise! Phew, that was too close! But she will be thrilled with the outfit when she gets back. And yes, walks without dear Mo will be so painful for a while and then maybe they will become a lovely way to celebrate him as well. I am very attractive to ticks but have found that spraying my boots/socks/pants legs with Deet is a way to be out and about without coming back loaded with them, as long as I put everything through a hot wash immediately (except boots, natch, which go in a bag and into the deep freeze). Bird flu doesn't seem to be as much of a thing down here in Virginia.
ReplyDeleteThinking warmly of you,
Ceci
Thanks for reminder about using DEET repellant. I have always avoided it bec of having children and Mo who might come in contact w the product. Not sure hot water will kill ticks tho. Apparently the bird flu is fairly localized here, a sudden appearance of many dead shore birds. Tho I feel they might be the victims of starvation and extreme cold, no one seems to be resing the ones found.
DeleteI think the Minnie Mouse outfit you made for your little friend's doll is just the cutest outfit. Your drawings are wonderful too. You are truly talented. I hope knowing that Baby Mo couldn't have had a better mommy than you and remembering your happy times with him brings you comfort.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kindness about Mo. We were inseparable for all his 12 years. And thanks too for your sweet comment about my projects.
DeleteMary over at Country Threads is having a sort of sew a long with a cute star block. Sharon
ReplyDeleteThanks Sharon, that quilt sewalong project does look intersting. I bookmarked it.
DeleteHi Lizzy, I read and enjoy your blog every week but rarely post. I am truly sorry about Baby Mo. He was such a cutie. Our fur babies are family and like you, I know the heartbreak of loosing one. I hope you take comfort in all the memories.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Minnie Mouse doll outfit and I love the boardwalk quilt. Take care…..Catherine
Hi Catherine. Thanks for leaving a comment, as mentioned I do love hearing from friends like you who quietly visit. Thanks about my projects. I did a bit more on Bdwalk. The quilt you mentioned below is interesting, I saved it for future consideration.
DeleteForgot to mention Melva Loves Scraps is having a Little House Sampler quilt along. It’s nine log cabin blocks. Catherine
ReplyDeleteI've been a little absent from blogs lately and just saw about Mo and I'm so sorry he is gone. He was such a character and definitely a fun part of your blog. I'm glad to have "met" him. As for your painting, that looks amazing! (Far, far better than anything I've ever done!) I hope your weather improves soon. (I hope mine does, too...snow yesterday was NOT welcome!)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Katie. Hope the weather gets better for us all, soon.[then LOL, it'll be too hot!]
DeleteI love seeing your art, too. Your worst days are better than my best!
ReplyDeleteMy (uninvited) opinion - if I were to make the boardwalk quilt, I'd leave off the border and make all the stripes go the same direction. Maybe if you aren't up for a big quilt, make a throw for your sofa to cuddle with on chilly days. A touch of boardwalk for when you can't go walking, on days like the foggy/windy day?
I'm still trying to get over this annoying cold! It's on it's 10th or 11th day and the sniffles are mostly gone, but everything still makes me cough. I hate coughing! Hopefully it will go away soon!
Our little snow froze the hyacinths that were all the way up in the flowerbed, but I think the ones just emerging might be okay. Only 1 daffodils so far, but about 5 tulips are coming up. Im hoping the others are just slow.
Take care and let us know how you're doing!
Hi!! Nope, sorry, the Boardwalk border is to me, very appealing. The big boardwalks always have contrast slat direction, I think to minimize warping. I'm doin g okay--tomorrow is Mo's birthday....
DeleteI love the doll outfit. Such a nice surprise for your friend. You are very talented with the quilt idea and making doll clothes. And painting! Creative endeavors keep our minds occupied with good thoughts. I’m very sorry Moe has crossed over the rainbow bridge but people who give so much care and love to animals will be reunited in heaven with their babies again.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your positive comments on my projects and kind thoughts about dear Mo. Thanks for visiting and commenting, next time, add your first name or an internet name?
