Hi everyone. February round up.
I hardly know where to start---and not in a good "I'm so busy " way! The sun is shining, the snow is slowly melting. I made a plan w a friend to run to Trader Joe's for flowers and food goodies
My tryouts. Good to make samples. I see I need the strips to be much paler. Need to avoid blue and white and instead do greys. Otherwise the weathered wood effect is lost. And...the strips need to be about the same width, not random. The inspiration quilt is more complex than at first glance.
Improv is not my thing. I enjoy a a pattern, a design, a goal. It seems the kind of quilt I be thrilled to buy and use but not one I want to make.
Then there's this idea,
from.
I had planned to make it this winter, then decided not. Because who needs yet another big Fall quilt. This week I reconsidered: if making autumn quilts makes me happy, why not? Who cares. They're just for my amusement, no one will save them when I'm gone. Dumpster fodder!
Tax prep is the weekend plan but I also may make a couple try out blocks to see what I think. (as always it is too big; I already know the second from the bottom row will be eliminated.) The Puss in the Corner is a simple block, looks suitably unchallenging.
And these two ideas are grouped on my desk, though I 'm unsure what or where they will become a project.
I'm also sad not to make a US Birthday quilt.

Indoor bulbs:
More good news from amaryllis land! The bulbs are sprouting. I fed them, in case they were too neglected to rebloom. Maybe next year will be better.
And!: Big Red is showing a hint of green growth. on the right.
I've had her for maybe 8 years now, so happy she survived the bricklayers' damage last summer. So brave.
On the other hand: paperwhites.
Of twenty plus bulbs, only three grew and bloomed.
Sweet but disappointing.
Most of the plain narcissus, Nazareth? grew leaves but no blooms. The Chinese narcissus I was so excited about--yellow centers!--have just laid there doing nothing.
Next year 'Ill go back to the Ziva species from Amazon.

Mo had a vet checkup today. Mo will be 12 in a few weeks.
Better days ahead, 4-ish months til summer.
Have a great weekend.

gone to the beach....
2018 snow
Baby Mo in the snow, 10 months old. This is still his fave coat and it still fits!

You had to know that i would just love that Boardwalk quilt...it certainly reflects our snowy Winter, I think, despite the fact that it's called boardwalk. It is not easy to replicate an improv piece (ask me how I know!!). If you like Autumnal pieces, why not make them..(ieg. my Ojos).
ReplyDeleteBoy Cabin Fever says it all Lizzy; I haven't gotten out since the blizzard...at least you are shoveled out--we are, too and it just "feels" better, safer to know you could get out.. that snow piled up on the doors was scarey for me...
I feel bad for Mo; aging is tough on us all isn't it?
Not looking forward to DST change--at all!!
Take care --hugs, Julierose
Thanks, Julie. Snow tomorrow? noooo...
DeleteBoardwalk quilt could be interesting if you included all shades of browns, grays, slate blues, etc. It definitely wouldn't be perky but maybe something soothing. But if you prefer the fall quilts, but all means do what you love!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Mo is almost 12 . I remember when you first got him! It's hard to believe so much time has gone by!
I hope your weather improves! It's supposed to rain here for the next week, oh, joy...wet, muddy dogs tracking mud inside . I told my daughter her next dog should be a Yorkie - something nice and small! Big dogs are a big mess!
Hope your weekend is great!
"Not perky"" and ukewarm about the Fall quilt fromyou and Julie. Maybe I ll redo that as a h=guest room again, quit sewing and move on. Mo got really bad labs and report, don't mind me, just venting.
DeleteCan you put coats on the big dogs, that keeps them dry and clean, it's worth the effort. I always say to people who scoff at doggy coats and rain coats: it's not bec my dog gets cold, it's bec I don't want a wet dirty dog in my house.
PS prob we've known each other for as much as 20 years. Hard to imagine. From back in the Yahoo Plum groups. Life was so different then, rem the terrible trolls on groups? Scary.
Who says that America birthday quilts have to be red, white, and blue? You could put a birthday label on your Noah quilt or any other quilt you make this year. There's nothing more beautiful than New England in the fall. Make an American fall celebration quilt and enjoy the whole process. My birthday quilt is the one I recently posted about. I bought a 250 year patriotic panel and it's going to go on as backing. The Paperwhites are lovely in spite of themselves.
ReplyDeleteUSA birthday: the issue isn't the red white and blue. I love what you've done withe bot your current Star quilts. The J Wecker Frisch panel is adorable. Reminds me of Mary Englebreit's work. Sometimes JWF panels are so creepy and dark. I recently discarded one of the school kids, scary.
DeleteHave you ever tried Retayne for red fabric bleeding. I always use it on dark colors esp red [tho yellow runs terribly] .
I do love the paperwhites but feel that 3 blooms from 25+ bulbs is poor result.
Sorry you still have the snow mess 😥 I hope you find a new quilt diversion soon.
ReplyDeleteMe too!! Thanks.
DeleteSo much said and unsaid, this never-ending winter is taking a toll on all of us, and likely our momentum too. Tonight I'm hoping our clear skies will remain all night so we can experience the blood moon eclipse early tomorrow. It's supposed to last 84 minutes in our area. These events invariably occur during overcast skies around here. It would be great to actually see one. Warmer weather is heading our way late this week, hope it's the same for you, and that you and Mo can enjoy some sunny afternoon deck time again.
ReplyDeleteThat final photo …priceless
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting, John. and getting all the way to the final pic, lol.
