Hi everyone! January and this is indeed a dreary day, dark grey dripping rain. Better than snow of course and if I was feeling well, I'd bundle up for a nice rainy beach walk. Not to dwell on illness but yesterday was the first day since mid-December that I have felt even somewhat normal. Quilting recently bores me to tears, as does reading, knitting, sketching--well, everything. Yet having end of year projects to finish--requiring no thought!--has truly been a blessing. A reason to walk into the sewing room and do something. I finished binding Old Red Baskets last night. I so hope to find striped tulips for at least a brief photo shoot.
And I cut out and set up the final Snow Babies for Silent Night.
The little make do Christmas quilt needs its stars quilting, had that set up but undid to do pants hemming favor with useful but ugly knit specific cover stitching.
The house is again blue and white with a few interesting deep red touches for warmth, including a lovely gifted knitted throw from Boll&Branch. I'm momentarily bored with displayed quilts/ kitsch/ twee, clutter though I enjoy my winter drieds/ big bowl with new orange neroli candle:
I wanted dried pomegranates, but they're wildly expensive. So I'll dry a few or maybe new orange pomanders would be fun?
Having said NO handmades, I am so in love with this remnant of an Ocean Waves quilt. It was a gift in my box of antique treasures from my brother and SIL. I think it is so refreshing. Maybe it will be a pillow after all?
So back to Winter of 26, what's on deck besides Noah's Ark patches turned into a top and off to Lori C for her magic?Usually I have the winter sewing all planned out. I had thought to make a 250 USA commemorative project. They are just so fabulously interesting in another 200 years! This was a choice: https://www.janpatekquiltsinc.com/product-page/liberty-garden-book

, though I get confused by her ojos and always give up. [I'll make Julie's method instead if I make this one.]
For more primitive ideas: This darling Baskets, sent by Penny. Good colors, texture, interesting layout....
a traditional regional style from my pioneer families' part of Ohio. [Once we were so proud of our land grants further south in south central and south western Ohio. Oh how history has been rewritten. No judgement as to better or worse, just confusion, where we once had pride and patriotism.]
He has been a lovely boy for me as I struggle to regain energy and focus. Zzzzzz
instead of NY?

Love the little "snow babies" with the blowing scarfs--so cute!! You have a lot of good projects for possible future sewing; of course I LOVE Boardwalk...really interesting use of strips, I think... and looks like a fun one to sew up...also the Cheri Payne sampler type looks like a fun make to me...
ReplyDeleteAll the appliqued ones are good choices, too. Decisions decisions. So far I haven't had anything really "send me" lately. [ Too much frustration and anger simmering with the world situation...!!]
This Wednesday Helga is going for her "SPA" treatment...evidently she doesn't feel like sewing either as her "chattering sounds" tell me....
Looks like Mo is happy to get home once more; happy to hear that you are moving along healthwise, Lizzy--you had a really tough go of it...;(((
hoping 2026 will be better...hugs, Julierose
Thanks Julie. I wish my [nameless]machine could spend the spa trip w your Helga. Do you think she'd sew better for me if I gave her a name?
DeleteQuilters have a talent I envy. I love a beautiful quilt and appreciate how hard they are and I'd never be able to do. I've toyed for years to just make a scrappy quilt but even that is more than I can muster. Whatever you decide will be gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think anyone can make a quilt they love and use! You could try local sewing shop or your local schools might have evening classes. Try it! You Tube also. Thanks for the positive vibes!
DeleteYou've got a lot of good choices there and a lot of variety, too. I hope something sparks the creative juices, but I know, too, how sometimes just even the idea of quilt making can make you want to run for cover! As for the weather location - I've noticed with a new internet router-thingie (same company, new device) my browser location (I've set my location services to OFF!!!) moves me around the country. I'm located in the Midwest, but have seen the Google think I'm everywhere from Seattle to New York City, so maybe your Internet is providing the location and it's coming from a tower less local than you'd expect? Isn't technology fun? (Although I will admit I enjoy confusing the crap out of the ad services in the apps I use with this non-information!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for encouragement. I figure by the time I finish up current little projects I will have decided.
ReplyDeleteW weather technology--oh I laughed a bit. My mom was addicted to the Weather Channel later in life and she'd see dire storm warnings--elsewhere! And call me all upset and worried. I'd be like, Mom that's in North Dakota, not Cape Cod. I Guess Philly is close enough but does have diffrent weathher and earlier sunset etc.
The snow babies are wonderful. I used to do a lot of Jan Patek quilts and often wonder how she is doing. I hope you continue to feel better and that your energy returns.
ReplyDeleteI too am very drawn to Jan Patek quilts. While results are usually not my personal style [fondest of pieced traditionals], I always have so much fun making the JP projects.
DeleteJP is older now, not really designing. I hope she is well and with her family. I know the recent loss of her husband hit her hard.
Maybe you are suffering from quilt possibilities overload! So many beautiful choices, my fave is the baskets, though I don't want to do anymore applique until the Bramble Blooms two are finished, if they ever are. I'm having motivation problems this month, just want to sit in my chair and nap mostly. Still fun to dream though while we watch the snow come down sideways. Your brother and SIL find the best gifts for you! They have a good eye for choosing lovely vintage things.
ReplyDeleteChoices are fun! Despite the very lingering ennui of the flu. The cough is exhausting. I m glad you can enjoy the snow.
DeleteI love the ones from the Baskets onwards. Perhaps the last quilt of all would be my favourite, but a LOT of work there. You have, as the previous lady said, too much choice! I hope you are on the mend soon. It has taken a/b's and steroids to knock my virus on the head, once it had taken up residence in sinuses and lungs. Grr.
ReplyDeleteI hope we both/ all get better soon. Here they do not Rx antibiotics for viruses, so I don't know what to expect when I see the GP next week. The high dose steroids were a huge help, but after the dose is done there's def a backwards step in recuperation.
DeleteThe quilt you like, the Ohio Sampler, will be fun; the blocks for me are one challenge at a time, so not overwhelming. It will probably be a summer hand sewing project, could go one for years, lol.
Your homemade bread today looked so good.

I'm glad you were able to finish the binding on your red baskets with the lovely quilting. I'm glad you were able to finish it because I'm sure it helped your malaise. (I don't know why that word came to mind but it works) So many wonderful projects to consider. The 2nd quilt looks like fun and would not require specific fabrics. I love the basket quilt and there's room in this quilt to add things that are meaningful to you. I've been considering making Cheri's sample quilt for along time. It's a sweet quilt. I bought the Miami Ohio Sampler book and have drooled over it numerous times. As far as the blocks you have already made, just put flags in between the blocks like Jan did to make them a size to fit together. I've considered doing a 250th Anniversary quilt but haven't committed to anything. Not because I'm sad about the condition of our country but because there are other things out there that I want to make. I feel like if I made an anniversary quilt it would be to support a better USA and would help me be hopeful instead of discouraged. I've started a quilt with 127 stars in it - maybe I'll count it as my 250 quilt. Mo looks trim as ever.
ReplyDeleteSome good suggestions for a 250 USA aspect. Thanks!
