Happy Sunday! November is drawing near its final week. My favorite month, tied with July-August, I suppose.
Autumn, true autumn, has arrived and when the wind is gentle, I've been enjoying walks to the beach, though sad and guilty Mo can no longer come along.
Many sightings of sea ducks, a lovely sight.
They don't form Vs, but long scraggly skeins, that ravel/ unravel in the chill November sky.
Golden eyes, squas, surf scoters. Buffleheads. I love their names.
Speaking of skeins, I took my yarn in my pocket one warm day, thinking a change of scenery might clear my head and I'd enjoy an hour knitting on the dune benches.
Sadly marked off limits. Repair, remove? Mo and I used to sit there sometimes on very quiet Fall days.
After one big wind blow I gathered leaves to press and save for my slightly neglected nature journal.
The pickings were meagre but the colors enchant me. Inspire me.
Colors echoed by the soon to be stored Fall quilts stacked here awaiting their airing before sleeping another year. Don't you love the cheddar Stars w the prairie points! It was ''misfiled'' for years. I'll add pics before storing this week.
The pumpkin and the bowl have been added to, how fun to get out the prim cooky cutters. On Dec 1st I'll bring the pumpkin to the beach for the small critters to feast upon.
The sewing box is empty now, summer projects are complete. It needs a tidy up, then will be stored under my cutting table until summer comes again.[7 1/2 months til summer]
One morning I made a few sewing gifts, end of day pieces that use remnants and saved bits and buttons. I haven't made any strawberries recently. So fun!
Perhaps I'm ready to work on them again. I kind of froze up bec I ordered real emery powder to use instead of my beach sand. But then was wary of using the emery, the fine grit seems iffy--I can just see me inhaling it somehow. ( yes, laughable, but thus speaks anxiety personified.]. I dithered all summer on how to safely use it but for these little tuck in gifts I went back to safe white sand.
Yes, my strawberries are deliberately primitive and make do, mostly. For these I use old fabric bits, buttons, yarn or string.
Looking for buttons was again a pleasing task. This time I found a bizarre nickel, very modernist, from 2009. And I found a new-ish penny on my leaf walk. Whatever will become of pennies now they're discontinued? I wonder.
Have a good week!
Happy Thanksgiving. [below, look, autumn tulip. I'm thrilled.]
love

gone to the beach...

Comments are disappearing, please say Hi?
ReplyDeleteSorry about your beach knitting. What an odd thing to make the benches unavailable. The colors of the nature finds are just luscious. It's sad to let autumn go this year for me too. Love the stack of quilts with all their orange/gold/russet glory. I got out an orphan block in fall colors to make into a little table topper. I pressed, layered, and pin basted it Now I need to stitch . One last project for fall.
ReplyDeleteI hope Mo's having contented dreams.
Beautiful Autumn photos of the beach and dunes--and, yes, yes, yes!! I do love those darling prairie points--I have always wanted to add some to "something" along the way--perhaps this year ...
ReplyDeleteI spent the morning doing my final shop for Turkey Day (amid surprising crowds!!) and have just finished making a couple button garlands (pix to come soon). I love love love how they came out and the tinkley sounds they make..I'd forgotten how much fun I used to have with "crafting projects" --mostly with my Mom and Cousin Jeannette (sadly both gone before now....) . Ah holiday nostalgia....
I hope Mo is staying as comfortable as possible these days...does he get a bit of Tom Turkey???;))) A special hug goes out for him ...
Hugs, Julierose
I always look forward to your blog, Lizzy, and I love seeing your quilts (especially the wonky pumpkins) and what you are working on and Mo, of course. Sad he can’t accompany you on your walks anymore.
ReplyDeleteThis Thanksgiving I will not be cooking. My son and his girlfriend are hosting. First time in many years I won’t be cooking. Kind of sad for me in a way but I’ve had some medical issues and my children want to make things easier for me.
I hope you have a great week….stay well…stay safe. ((((Lizzy & Mo))))
Thanks! I m so glad you enjoy your visits here. Yes, giving up the holiday hosting is hard. I miss it. Gathering family and friends is such a joy. Enjoy your holiday!

Your nature gatherings though meagre as you said, are glorious in their autumn finery. They remind me of the book Juliann introduced to us earlier this year, The Art of Living in Season by Sylvie Vanhoozer, where she describes the Advent walk to gather local greenery, herbs etc. to place around the creche. And your gatherings match the vibe of that glorious stack of quilts - can't wait to see the entire prairie points quilt! I for one am happy not to be hosting the big Thanksgiving feast anymore, very content to just contribute my chocolate pecan pies and let younger daughter do the main course. She gets lots of help since everyone who comes brings a side or dessert. Not looking forward to the weather forecast for Thanksgiving and weekend - a lot of snow and high winds. Terrible traveling, and then on Friday/Saturday we will be helping an elderly friend move out of her 2nd floor apt. into the first floor of a house a few blocks away. Hope your Thanksgiving is lovely and peaceful!
ReplyDeleteThose quilts look amazing. Just the sight has made my fingers twitch to pick up a needle again. How sad Mo can no longer accompany you on your walks. I am in NZ another week. It truly has been the holiday of a lifetime.
ReplyDeleteoops, answered below.
DeleteThanks! I ve been enjoying your NZ posts, what a stunningly beautiful country, much bigger and more diverse than I ever imagine. Enjoy every moment of this adventure! I know you will.

Sad that your bunch was off limits. I often wish there were more benches on the trails where I walk.
ReplyDeleteI wish we had more...I used to just sit on the boardwalk or sand but sometimes now I can't get up if pain is bad. In warmer weather these two benches are always filled, I m too shy to ask if i can sit too. But it's a nice spot in fall and winter.
