Good evening! Mo and I just came in from our walk--a beautiful Full Moon is floating in a turquoise sky---lavender now--- filled with ''angel clouds" [puffy pastel with golden glow.] How wonderful.
In early January I quickly zapped out a simple nap quilt for a child.
Inspired by the reading quilts Julierose makes for her granddaughters, this can be a storytime quilt, a take to camp or the beach quilt, a snuggle blanket for her new play tent.
A utility quilt.
Her parents strongly dislike patchwork so I just took a stack of sweet pink and lemon yellow batik 10" squares and set them randomly.
The best part is the Ladybug quilting, by my friend Lori C. who always brings my ideas to life.
I had planned to use wide pink satin blankie binding.
But 1-I couldn't figure out an easy way to attach it and 2- it seemed old and crinkly, then it melted when I pressed the fold lines out.
Pink polka dot binding instead, not sewed very well. A wasted rush as the child's birthday was canceled because she had Covid again. [how sad is that!].The backing is soft cream and white polka dot flannel. I know pink and yellow is a reach for these friends, but I just cannot make a grey play quilt, sorry not sorry. "Pink Lemonade" ~ a Summer Quilt for ****
....................
The Thanksgiving quilt is also finished and just waiting for deck time/ and summer for its binding.
I'm still not sure what to put in the open spaces next to the Pineapple. L * D, my initials/ 20---23, its date? 1623 [! wow, synchronicity] first Thanksgiving, which my family loved celebrating on the Pilgrim shores of Cape Cod.
Right now I'm not loving poor Pineapple, it has sad connotations now, of holidays uncelebrated, changing times. And---too literal, after seeing blog friend Dorothy's neutral, graphic, and beautifully made version.
Another issue: The raw edges require me to wash it, as the edges will lift and fray and add textural depth. Yet--disatser in the making?
.................................
Most afternoons, sewing hour has focused on Winter Marsh, making Flying Geese blocks for spacers and border. On sunny days I bring my trimming tools and the blocks out to sit facing the beach, pretending from my dining room table that the sun is warm and summer is on its way.
A quilt like this, so random!, really needs a designs wall.
that I do not have,
My next two goals are to piece the setting Sun block and to piece the top's columns. I'd love to have this completed for next winter.
..............................
I want to share photos my friend sent me of her recent quilts she has made as they relocate yet again and wait for their new house to be built. She cheerfully calls the long wait in a rented condo, a ''staycation'' and has focused on these small projects. She does lovely work, usually handquilted.
......................
Friday I made a big stir fry w left over pork tenderloin and veggies from fridge and from Trader Joe's.
Every time I make this it seems different but fast and tasty and warm on a rainy night. Today I made many salads, plus a pasta casserole. This week is IV clinic week, and I try to prep easy meals ahead.
And I made mine because your pineapple quilt inspired me. Don’t give up on it, it’s beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWe had such a poor Summer but there is hope that Autumn will be better than usual. So the forecaster says!
Stay well.
Dorothy
Thanks for the encouragement, Dorothy. I did love your version.
DeleteI hope your Fall is nice. I am worried summer will be terribly hot here after the mild winter. Mild with some crazy frigid days, I should say.
Love your quilts and NO, you could not "go grey" for a child's nap quilt! Whoever decided that dark grey was a good colour for everything in a house must have grown up in a battleship! HATE the colour - even if it's wall paint with a silly name ("Mouse's Breath" or what have you). I think the colours you chose blend so well together. (How can anyone NOT like patchwork?!)
ReplyDeletePineapple is SO pretty, and Winter Marsh looks like it will be a wowser when it's finished.
Your friend's small quilts are so pretty too - she sounds very patient, waiting for her new home to be built.
I saw an even better version of that Cheddar quilt on sale at the weekend - kicking myself for not taking my camera as the hand-stitched quilting and design on it was amazing. It was a gentler more peachy orange, and even priced at £280, sold straight away.
"Mouse breath grey" made me laugh and laugh this morning.
DeleteWish you gotten a pic of the Wels quilt, tho bright cheddar orange is, to me, more desirable. You can see I love brights. Thanks for kind comments.
I just think your pineapple is lovely--i am sorry it doesn't please you;(((
ReplyDeleteThe nap/reading quilt turned out beautifully (now, who doesn't like quilts???). And your Winter Marsh is really coming together so well--quite in your style, too--wonderful...
Mo will be a big boy of nine? Tempus Fugit for sure...Stay safe and try to have a good week
Hugs and good wishes Julierose
I love love love your raspberry lemonade quilt for that little one who obviously deserves better than 'mouse-breath gray' for her adventures! I've mentioned before how much I love your pineapple quilt. Assuming you're going to hand wash it to keep the fraying to a manageable level? Hard to believe that nine years have gone by for little Mo! Hope your treatment goes well and you recover quickly. Your meals look delish!
ReplyDeleteYour raspberry lemonade quilt is just awesome, I love it, and the quilting really enhances it and will be delightful almost as an "I spy" element. Mo turning 9, I guess he's truly all grown up now;). Beautiful sky... I can just imagine that fresh beach air.... ahhh!
ReplyDeleteI think all quilts are beautiful -- in fact, anything handmade with love and attention is perfect -- of course, I love color so definitely would not be drawn to gray. I am in love with your Winter Marsh quilt. The design and colors are really so lovely. The blackbirds really pop.
ReplyDeleteI was really surprised to read that someone disliked patchwork so much. That's a strange thing to be adverse too. Now, cilantro or liver I can understand. . . but patchwork? Maybe your sweet little quilt will show them than patchwork can be soft and pleasant and charming. You've got me in the pineapple mood. That is, you and my friend Heidee, who loves all things pineapple. I think your pineapple piece is great. No apologies for making something so playful and fun. I'm sorry it reminds you of holidays not celebrated. Maybe you need to celebrate the Spring Equinox with it and make some new memories. Tell Mo Happy almost Birthday.
ReplyDeleteI like your pink/coral and yellow quilt. I hope the little one who receives it loves it!
ReplyDeleteYour Thanksgiving quilt is delightful. I think your initials and the date would be perfect one either side of the pineapple. I didn't see Dorothy's pineapple but I love yours! (Don't compare!)
Not having a design wall or even space to lay a quilt in progress on the floor can be a real challenge. (I can put mine on the floor but the kitties seem to think it's a skating rink just for them.) But Winter Marsh looks like it's coming along really well.
I hope your clinic week hasn't been too rough. Good of you to prepare food in advance.
Hello to Mo, too.

Love your little child's quilt! It is happy and fun! I think you are being too hard on yourself about the pineapple quilt- I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhen we were on the harbor in Portland Maine my moon and clouds looked much like yours! So hard to capture in a photo.
