Winter Lull

Good morning! Is that the sun I see peeking through the endless grey clouds?  Mr Sunshine has been elusive so far this year, but warmer temps are keeping me cheerful. Last night we had a thunderstorm! Seems very unusual for early January.

The cottage is very quiet now. Of course the holidays' glitter and joy are long gone and only winter's long quietude remains.

For want of any mad inspiration I allow the decor to return to its blue and white, with touches of black and brown.

I am so pleased to have new lamps, a Christmas gift.

For a few weeks the mercury glass jars and baubles can remain. They reflect the light and colorless-ness of the winter ocean.

Woodland accents. Berries and dried branches.

Just the one softly colored quilt pulled out so far, plus the Amish inspired doll quilt.

An IG influencer I enjoy , Emily at myweatheredhome HERE adds fresh greenery in the form of houseplants like pothos and ferns. I think she buys new each year! She must discard the plants after styling her pics. I am not a fan of houseplants, mine never die, they just live on and on, becoming humanized and gaining scraggly personalities. I don't have the heart to throw them out or let them die.

I redid my bedroom in layers of warm flannel and a wool sleigh coverlet,

with a lovely plaid blanket that was a Christmas gift.

The wool quilt proved to hot and too fragile for this year's January, so it is replaced with a basic blue for now.

If things progress as hoped and planned, the winter can be enjoyed here in the little quilt room.

Mo finds it cozy, if lacking in ice cream.

Making room on the sewing desk for journaling.

This is a tentative start of a tiny perpetual nature journal. I'm ambivalent--5 years from now? Ten? The foliage here is just not that interesting and the scribble journal so much more fun and undemanding.

Have a great weekend!

  2. You have such a wonderful "eye" for decorating your home...I love all the dried berries, pinecones, etc and that blue quilt on your bed is just gorgeous!! Now that I have gifted most of my quilts to my children i am left with no lap quilt for myself...I will try to crochet one to replace them
Mo looks very comfy with his winter sweater on;)))
We did not get the thunder storm, just a lot of heavy downpours and high wind gusts...what we need is softly falling rain to sink into the soil...
I hope your weekend is good--hugs, Julierose

  3. A few moments with your calm and peaceful post were just what I needed tonight. Wondering what's about to happen with those beautiful cheddar fabrics on your work table. Shabbat Shalom my friend.

  5. Posting for Mel: Here's my comment for "Winter Lull":

So far this January has been odd here, too - frigidly cold one week, in the 50s the next, LOL. Makes it hard to know what to wear when going out!

I always love seeing what you're up to. Love the browns quilt and really love the blue quilt on your bed!

Your sewing room is great, obviously used but not pure chaos like it would be if it was mine! And I love seeing your art, no matter how simple or complex!

It cracks me up how much Mo is like a cat - sleeping in your fabric box or cuddled in his bed.

Best wishes for a good 2023! Take care!

  6. What a lot of different blues you sea from your ocean home, both sky and water! Beautiful.
Looking at the photos of your home and the vignettes it occurs to me that your home could/should be in a decorating magazine!
I would keep greens and flowers here but with the cats visiting, it's not possible. They add something special, I think. I especially love all the gifts of nature. I actually thought the rose hips were poppy seed pods. They look similar to me. The rose hips are such a beautiful, shiny brown. And the white berries are beautiful, too. What plant are they?
I chuckled at your description of house plants. I have a cutting of a vining plant that was my mom's. She died in 1997, which tells you how long I've had it. Last year we put it outside in the spring when it was warm, then one night the temperature went down below freezing. The plant looked like it had died but wouldn't you know, it hadn't, and here we still have this little scrawny 4-leafed plant. But, like you, I can't just throw it out.
Your new quilt is wonderful. It looks homey and comfortable.
I love the photos of your sewing room. Thanks for sharing them. I often wonder what other quilters' spaces look like.
I hope you have a good weekend, too.

  8. A cozy wintery post. Your natural touches here and there in your cottage are so nice. The dark browns are such a nice complement to the blues and whites. Love how your threads are displayed, so colorful ready for use. Lovely rose hips sketch.

  9. Such pretty and calming decor. You motivate me to do more around here. Well, at least in my mind. Now how to convince myself to actually get up and make some changes. That stack of cheddar fabric really caught my eye. What do you have planned?
    Enjoy your January~

  11. As I write this, we're having a heat wave. Just looking at your cool, calm cottageand beach with its birds is so cooling.
The brown star quilt is a real favourite. The different scales of the brown sashing works so well. I love pouring over the fabrics you used in the stars.
The assortment of berries and hips you gather
are a delight - perfect for your nature study sketches.
