Happy Mail

Good evening, friends! Recently the mailman has brought me lovely unexpected presents from far far away. A slightly crumpled envelope arriving on an unprecedentedly frigid November day is such a treat, so heartwarming. Quilters and blog friends are so generous and so kind. I am so touched.

From Penny all the way from South Africa!--an assortment of treasures small and smaller.

I became friends with Penny through my blog, with our common interests in antiques, quilting, gardening, and food/wine. I had no idea she is such a fabulous knitter.

Aren't these mittens just the best. I love open fingers  for access to keys, doggy treats, phone. These are the softest sweet yarn, slightly more pinky lavender than in photo. Rowan yarn. Note the perfect tiny cables.

Plus thrifted Liberty lawn fabric! I had just used up almost all of the pansy print from Lori /HQ, so this was a special treat. [not similar, just that they are my much loved pansies]; the wonderful ashes of roses color similar to the mitts.

Other bit and bobs and treasures, like pencils in a fave fabric pattern, and of all things, a much needed drawing eraser.A charming fan for those hot days when the power fails, an issue P and I both experience more often we'd like.

Darling tags, to encourage me to keep doing my tiny paintings, or to at least try?And all these wonderful vintage patterns. I do love them all. The patriotic traditionals are so inspiring.

I may have to look for more of these for the quilt shown. The ship and the eagle/ date; center w flags especially appeal to me. Oooh and a Pineapple. The needle turn applique would keep me busy for many summers on the deck.

I fell in love with this pattern immediately.

I was all set to start cutting when for once I looked at the size and it's big, a full sized quilt. But so beautiful, so Lizzy.  I set it aside while i think about how/ if I can reduce the size.

.....

Then , when I admired a thrift shop find of a vintage Cheri Payne pattern booklet,  FB friend Rosemary immediately messaged me that she had two copies and would share one with me. Yes, yes, yes.

So many cute Cheri ideas,

love the kitty.

And this angel!

I am liking the idea of a small Christmas Log Cabin quilt this year [my home alone project during hols], like a candle mat.  Inspsired by this pattern in the book--maybe w Kitty?

---and this postcard quilt, December 2023 from TQC.

And last, my dear brother sent me a big box of pink Christmas ornaments!

I  said I want to fill my big wooden bowl w pink ornaments!

And also need some to repair the wreath he made me years ago now. Sadly due to much love and use and storage  few of the original balls have cracked. Now I can replace them.  Also in the box were these gorgeous pink kugels! I love them! Put them out right away in my bittersweet bowl.

You can see how inspiring how exciting, it is to receive gifts and ideas from friends. I do hope the return mail, the thank you mail, pleases as much. What fun we have.

....................

I  finally fixed my printer, so catching up on two scribble journal pages. [I color on a printout, not on the original bec printer ink is more stable]

November is noticeably less colorful than the summer pages were. I wonder what I will find in the dead of winter? May be drawing rocks and shells.

..............................

The zinnias keep on, bravely flourishing. We had [bogus] frost warnings Monday so I brought the rest inside.

Here is Mo, come to see what mommy is doing and where his ice cream is! Too cold for ice cream is not in his mindset, it will take me months to train him out of looking for ice cream at 3 PM, sigh.

And the nasty pods from the ugly locust trees planted in public areas. The pods wrap around Mo's ankles and scare him.

Have a good weekend? Did you get your turkey, bake your pies yet?

love

lizzy

gone to the beach...

    1. I decided you are right! So we put on our parkas and windproof pants and had ice cream on the deck today. No sewing as a gale wind is blowing.

  2. Sweet gifts from your lovely friend. I love that big old bloomers pattern! So wonderful. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. We're hoping to go to a daughter's home if weather and hubby's health cooperate.

  3. posting for Mel: This is Melody - it won't let me sign in again, which is annoying... So much cool stuff in this post! The package from Penny is so nice, and I'm sure you'll especially love those patterns. I love the bloomers one, too, so I hope you can make it the size you want. And I really like the idea of a Christmas log cabin as a candle mat!

I'm not sure I've ever seen pink Christmas ornaments, so that was especially nice of your brother.

I can't tease Mo for the ice cream thing. Lately I've been munching Sonic ice (my fridge water/ice is on the fritz) even while I'm huddled in a sweater at my computer. You'd think I'd crave hot tea instead, since it's getting cold here. (I had ice AND hot tea one night - carefully so I didn't crack my teeth!)

The one brightly-colored turkey platter makes me smile, it's so cheerful looking it's almost goofy.

Almost forgot - I love your journal pages. I'm sure you'll find something even in the winter! I guess if it's too cold to go out, you could sketch Mo and bits from your house - your teacup, your sewing machine...?
Did any of your friends or you ever do the painted rocks thing, where you leave them somewhere for others to find? Or, LOL, make your own no-care flower garden... (https://www.decorhomeideas.com/painted-rocks/) --- the 'garden' is close to the bottom but there are lots of cute ideas...

    Thanks for sharing!

  4. Lovely November goodies! As far as I know our Thanksgiving will be only 3 of us. I purchased a turkey breast and my first frozen pumpkin pie to bake!

  5. Happy mail indeed and those gloves are so beautiful. How thoughtful of your friend! I like your little log cabin idea. Your journal pages are such a fun and creative way to note seasonal changes.

  6. Love the pink Christmas balls. So magical. That was quite a haul of patterns - so fun! I made the patriotic rooster for my niece a few years ago. It was a joy to make. I'm sure you could reduce that darling pattern with the bouquet in the vase. It looks like it should be smaller anyway. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  7. You were certainly generously gifted, Lizzy. What treats to find packages from friends and family in the mail. The fingerless gloves are so beautiful. They looks soft and warm.
The Big Old Bloomers pattern is really fun. Could you take it to a copy center to have it reduced? At one of our local shops (not Staples) I can tell them what size I'd like the pattern to be (for example, it's 8" but I'd like it to be 6") and they have a calculator to know how much to reduce it. Just an idea. What size would it finish at originally?
The word kugel, as used for glass ornaments, is new to me, though the actual ornaments are not. The ones your brother sent are beautiful. They look like they might be wider than they are tall?
It looks like your locust trees are prolific! I'm so sorry. Ours fall in our yard so aren't so noticeable. Poor Mo getting tangled in them.
I love that sunset photo with the fence across the front.
I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  8. You've no idea how much joy your blog gives. There's always so much to see, take in and imagine. I'm very taken by the development in your shetches - the pods and leaves are a delight.
With the generous assistance of friends, we've developed pigeon post to a high level. I love passing on patterns which have given me joy in the past and are filled with memories of friends who have moved far away. It seems a natural next step to keep their journey going!
I agree, decreasing the size the Big Old Bloomers quilt is a very good idea. It would be far more useful as a wall piece or as part of one of your creative compositions.
I must say Cheri P's cat cushion speaks to me. I could see it as a picture on a tiny wall space in my 'busy' sewing room.
