A Summer Friday ~ Quilts Birds Flowers miscellany

Please let me know if you cannot see photos, thanks

Hello, hello. Let me collect my thoughts here...Storm Elsa has come and gone, no wind, no damage. These photos are thunderstorms that preceded Elsa.

Mo has gone for a little sleepaway so it will be quiet here.

Before I show you my meagre recent quilt stuff, a few other random notes:

My friend and I went to the $$$ health food store for supplements and tonics. I promised myself flowers because with the new food delivery, fresh flowers aren't an option.

Look at the price of 5 peony stems! Though Kel says Trader Joe's has peonies and no doubt they're more reasonably priced.

Beautiful but far beyond my budget. [I got Telenti gelato, chocolate black raspberry, instead! HERE Look, Kit, they deliver!]

I did cut flowers from my deck pots. In case they'd be destroyed by Elsa wind. I hope the pots reflower.

..........................

Quilting update:

I finished piecing my Pineapple  body section.

and very carefully cut it out. The big star on my paper copy is the stem, the patterns are just superimposed.

It will be needle turned and all those triangle corners , cut to 1/8" seam allowance and laboriously turned in---!? A disaster waiting to happen.  Instead I did a facing, a pillow turn, for smooth curves. Not sure if I'll leave the entire back or trim to 1". I'm pleased with the result.

Since this is intended to be a festive fall quilt hanging, I had planned for years to use the Grunge with gold coin dots for the center backing.

But on completion of the pineapple body, it just said No. Waiting now for natural linen from Fabric.com. [Oh it just arrived! Nice linen but a wrinkled wadded up mess, Nasty!] Dots may reappear in the corners or I may rethink them as the background, tho I have other choices.

Fall pansies?

ideas...

Got that far and stopped.

...................

Giraffe.

I was looking for I forget what in my collection of redwork quilt blocks, and fell in love again with this giraffe block. He is so cute! And well done. I brought him out to enjoy and  maybe he can become part of an antique block challenge, if Lori does one this fall! Or he can become  another of my lucky series, again inspired by a little quilt on Lori's blog Post on HQ HERE , or the Rooster quilts on IG. HERE

The pyramid makes me laugh. He is a giraffe, not a camel. I don't think the Pyramids are giraffe habitat. Don't they roam on the savannahs further south?

Deck afternoons I sewed the Big House on Silent Night. Just a bit of roofline to finish.

Next is the pine trees. I dyed wool for the trees with the most amazingly ugly result. I will do needle turn cotton instead. The trees are dark and darker green, really just a backdrop. I was expecting all day today/yesterday to be Elsa storm to prep the trees, but it is beautiful! May wade through the floodwaters to go to the beach instead.

I plan to add at least one snowsuited child to my scene. Here she is, from Snowbound.

The sled children [child] are adorable too.

This small quilt is in Snowbound. Would make such an adorable winter, post-Christmas project. [I don't think Snowbound is still in print, but Jan P reuses motifs so they are findable in other books/ patterns.]

..............................

Did  mention I might someday make a tiny Stay Home! / pandemic quilt with my homemade cotton masks? Not sure I should rush to cut them up just yet, with all the corona variations around.

...............................................

Off topic, every day now Mo and I see a pair of cardinals near my cottage, in the quiet area near the ugly locust tree. I am so thrilled!

There are very few songbirds here, just fall migrants, and Mr Mockingbird, so a newly arrived pair of cardinals is such a joy. There used to be a pair that nested in a volunteer old apple tree in the marsh. I'd see them on early school runs. Didn't see them recently, though I hope they're still there. Maybe one of my couple, or both?, are their offspring.

.....................................

Food shopping. After I pay my bills mid month I plan to order Freshly meals, to try out. I know they deliver here because I see the boxes on my neighbors' steps.  And the Martha Stewart food prep kits look fun too. One result of Covid is that it has really made me expand my thinking about shopping and delivery and how and when to eat.  Freshly

Have a great weekend.

love

gone to the beach....

  1. Glad to see you have had fun quilting and that Storm Elsa didn't wreak too much havoc in your neck of the woods. My only sewing has been finally finishing a Roman Blind for the Library which will get hung today.

Expensive flowers - a new shop in town has some pretty dried ones at around £30 and £40 a bunch ($41 and $55)!!! I think she will have those a long time.

    1. I can't imagine sewing and esp hanging roman blinds! You are so talented! I ll look forward to seeing the results on your blog.

Expensive flowers! We have a delivery service here---the couple delivers field flowers, wildflowers, branches, etc in bouquets that are about 100.oo for a few roadside queen anne's lace, lol. I love the look but oh my budget!

  3. Pix are all showing up now--gremlins at work I think!! ;))
Flower prices here are way up too...way beyond my budget...I wish my daylilies would last longer and they don't fare well as cut flowers...
I need to go back to my Grand-mere's choices--shasta daisies, marigolds, hollyhocks, etc.

I love your pineapple--SO neat--that is quite a workout with hst's great color choices--as you do so well...

I have finished the hand quilting on Blue Dolly quilt and have begun Purple Dolly...
I want to revisit my JP "The Owl and the Pussycat"..(I plan to make that eagle into an owl...just feels better to me...
    wish me luck...!)
Love your JP Silent Night--I do have that pattern too...just looks so complicated...me being such a beginner with applique...maybe someday..or at least a couple blocks--your snowbound peeps will be so cute...
    Hugs, Julierose

  4. I could see all the pictures fine! And WOW! Lots of things in this post! Let's see if I can comment in order, lol.

The cut flowers were beautiful but those prices would make me balk. Probably less than at a florist, though? I don't know, I very seldom buy flowers.

The thunderstorm pics are cool, that one looks like a nose! And that's a LOT of lightning! It's cloudy here with spots of rain - the radar map looks like we have freckles.

The pineapple project is cool, the triangles make it look like the pineapple texture! Tough choices for backgrounds, they all look interesting. Hard to choose! Great idea on the turning, too, I would not have thought of that! I'm sure that will be MUCH easier than needle turn!

LOL about the giraffe and pyramid!

Good to see the progress on Silent Night. LOL, I didn't think the greens were ugly, but maybe they don't look good on the background? Love the plan to include a child, and the small winter scene would be cool, too, as a separate project, maybe a wall hanging?

I would hang on to a few masks, since you have them made. We might be asked to wear them again if COVID (or something new) gets started up again. Also, now that people are kind of used to masks, people may use them during cold/flu season like they do in Japan and other places. Or wear when you're doing something dusty, or on winter dog walks to protect your nose and mouth from frigid wind. Just my 2 cent's worth! You could always make new ones if needed if you reuse the fabric now.

Nice that you may have cardinals nesting nearby! It's always fun to see the bright red males!

Whew, I think I made it in order, lol! If you go wading to get to the beach please be careful and have fun! And of course take pictures!

    Thanks for sharing!
I'm excited for you to try Freshly, and I hope you share pictures and what you think of the meals - and any other deliveries you try.

    1. The greens I showed are the good choices, in cotton. I threw out the hand dyed wool. both colors I dyed had awful rust splotches all over plus the colors werent pretty.

    2. I need to throw out all my dyes and buy fresh as needed now that we can go out and choose in person. The dyes were pprobably ancient.

  5. Hand tied or not, that's the most ridiculous- read rip-off price I've ever seen for common peonies. Sorry, but folks at your area of the state are seriously being taken for a ride with those prices. I'll have to send you a large priority box of them next year, it'll cost less. All your photos showed up fine. I love your latest pineapple block! Those were very interesting photos of Elsa's cloud formations.

  6. Those flowers are pretty, but, whew! I believe TJ's peonies were also 5 stems, but the cost was 8.99. Quite a difference. I was wondering if you would cut some of your deck flowers to bring in :)

Those storm pics, wow! Were you able to walk to the beach on posting day?

I think my neighbor uses Blue Apron? meal delivery. I work with someone that has tried a few different services. Martha Stewart's was her least favorite. Curious to hear your experience.

Neat that you have a couple of cardinals. I hope they hang around.

Must be quiet without your little buddy. You take care.

  7. I think the pandemic forced us all to be creative in shopping, etc and I believe that is here to stay. So much goodness in your post! The giraffe with the pyramids made me lol this morning!

  8. Last week I was very surprised to see peonies in one of our larger supermarkets for the first time that I can remember.
I really enjoy the children in the Snow quilt. They're beautifully drawn and would applique so well.
Your pillow turn solution to the pineapple problem was a great idea. I worked really well.
How lovely to have cardinals so near to you. A real privilege.
Glad you were safe from the storm.

  9. Ohh, I love your storm cloud photos. One of my favorite things is to watch a storm roll in, then listen to the rain pounding on the roof. So glad Elsa did no harm.
I wonder if the peonies are so expensive because they're out of season now (at least here in Central Ohio). The flowers from your deck pots are so pretty.
What a great way to turn the edges on your pineapple. Very efficient and simple. I like the fabrics you chose for it.
Your house block is charming and so is your giraffe.
