Update / Quilting ~ Blue Pineapples and Cartwheels.

Hi everyone! March is rushing by, isn't it. I am not accomplishing record amounts of sewing but slow and steady, I remind myself. [A juggler of many projects I am not!]

I feel like I'm doing okay. My main hope for March is to complete the top of Blue Pineapples and get it off to the quilter for this summer use.

0rdered two backings, extravagant but I measured carefully and didn't order too much. Whichever I don't choose can be pillow cases for summer beds.

Binding:  premade, something new to try.

Working without a pattern is freeing and I enjoy it, prefer it. But time gets spent figuring details, especially settings.

Here the layout begins.

Seems to work, but spacers and sashes  are needed.

Put together.

Many of you asked about the sashing and use of the white The white is a pigment white-on -white cotton, tropical hibiscus flowers.

I have just enough of the white to add the final borders, 3 1/2" each side and maybe a narrow framing strip top and bottom. The final bit of yardage cuts into about 1 3/4".

The white was originally purchased for Baby Pineapples, but the person I made it for wanted that grey background. I still prefer the white, but it was her daughter's big girl bed quilt for someday. So my friend had final say.

Looking from a distance, I see polka dots not pineapples. Ugh.

And this project reminds me of Blue Baskets/ Cheddar Handles, in its graphic impact. I did not need TWO.

....

Last week the solids for Cartwheel's borders arrived, faster than I expected. Fat Quarters Shop always ships really slow, even before the pandemic or storms.

I am not sure the new solids are okay. Certainly they do not match.

I ordered a Kona color card for one last try, bit of course that too is a delayed item from I forget where.

Below is is a small antique quilt top, fragment rediscovered as I searched for more antique turkey red for Cartwheels. It is a perfect size for a doll quilt, just needs a few repairs. I washed it and plan to hand quilt it in a simple diagonal. Maybe add some small wool motifs appliqued, from the files of the Cheri Payne group on FB. Just a for fun. The old thin cotton should be easy to quilt.

I'm  working on more hearts for winter storage/ spring cleaning and summer bowl and basket displays. My friend L used to help me finish the hearts, I miss her exquisite sewing so much.

................................

And this gift-to-myself arrived, ordered as a preorder back in maybe January.

I couldn't imagine what was in the envelope.

Authentic and useful light shirtings, for my quilting palette and stash; often they are hard to find. TQC is offering an adorable, slightly modern-ish Tiny Baskets patterns to go with them and these cream ground pretties are in stock now.  There is also a free pattern for fabric Easter Eggs. HERE  [free downloads]

......................

The other evening I could NOT find Mo!? Oh no, had he escaped? Frantic, I searched everywhere. Here he was found, in the sewing room, in his shirt bin. Waiting for me get busy sewing!! "And bring me a chew treat, mommy! Yeesh.."

The first day of spring was his 7th birthday. He had puppy ice cream instead of cake.

Have a good week~

  1. I think your pineapples look good and BOTH of your backing options are fabulous. I've seen those shirtings advertised and those would be great to have in stash. Maybe I should order some and have it delivered to one of my kids in the U.S. to store for me;). Love seeing another glimpse of your absolutely fabulous blue basket quilt. And, happy birthday Mo!

  2. It's hard to believe Mo is 7! Seems like he was a tiny pup only yesterday.
Pineapples are lovely. Great to see the setting fabric from close quarters which is the usual view when you're under it. The jungle and cloud fabric is a riot - love the contrast with the calmer front. It'll be like a party going on behind the quilt!!

  3. I Love that lush tropical backing fabric you chose for your blue pineapples. Though similar in color I think the blue and cheddar baskets definitely has a winter vibe, where the pineapple quilt speaks to soft warm ocean breezes. Great new shirtings, do you have a project planned for them?

  4. I love how your pineapples came out and that setting is super--I don't think they look like polka dots at all..those green tops definitely make them pineapples to my eye...
    Great shirtings prints you received...
Guess we are in for some rains today...it is dry out there.
Hope all goes well with your shot...hugs, Julierose

The red is not quite the same, but I think it would work.
    Happy birthday Mo!

  6. Great post, so much to see!! I love how Blue Pineapples is coming out, especially love the white-on-white print. I can see a similarity in the colors with Blue Baskets, but the feel is not the same! I love both the backings you got, how will you choose!! The 'leftover' one will make great pillowcases, I can just imagine them on a bed with PB! The binding is adorable, too, I hope it is easy to work with!

Colors are so hard to match up, even in person -- Choosing off the internet seems almost impossible! I'd be nice if you could send the shop a tiny swatch and get them to match it... If you can't find a solid red, would maybe a red-on-red print that's close work? LOL, I wonder if that's why the wheels quilt wasn't finished, for lack of red to finish it?!

The cream shirtings are so pretty! I have a dress from when I was in my early 20s? that's has a very similar feeling print, but I think it's white instead of cream. Nice addition to your stash!

Loved Mo's "hiding" spot, lol. Happy Birthday to both of you! I hope he enjoyed his ice cream!

The little quilt fragment will be a sweet doll quilt (the reds look very similar to the red you just got!). It will be fun so see it finished, too.

*YOU* may not think you're getting a lot done, but to *ME* you're moving right along! BP's top is almost done! I'm excited to see it on your bed for summer! Take care!

  7. I think that first fabric is far too pretty to hide BEHIND your quilt! It's gorgeous.

Love the little quilt you found too - that will be lovely to quilt, as so soft.

Lovely to have the quilting bit in my brain stimulated but it's flat out in the garden here for the forseeable future.

    1. Hi! I have been in awe of how you have made your new house into a lovely home already and now such hard work in the garden. Maybe you 'll relax this summer, a biit, and do some hand sewing out in the beautiful garden you're creating.

Th quilt is meant to be a deck throw or beach blanket, tho it got rather bigg...I thought the fun tropical fabric would look good on a throw and be visible or even used as the top side by those who dislike ''patchwork''/ granny stuff????

  8. Really liking how Blue Pineapples is looking. I like both backing fabrics. I would have a terrible time deciding...though I might lean a little toward the first. I would also love to see the first one as pillowcases, too, sooooo.... :)

Oh my gosh, I would love to have seen the Baby Pineapple quilt using the white on white fabric!!

Did you make those fabric eggs from the online pattern? Very cute!

I hope Mo enjoyed his special day. Though, I suspect he gets special treatment most days.
