The Finished Quilts of 2020

Good evening! Since it is far too dark wet and dismal for our annual New Years' beach walk and blog post, I'll look back at my quilt finishes for the year gone by.

I used to think these [almost required in quilt blogland] count-up posts are terribly tacky and braggy. There is always the person who made umpteen dozens, the sewer who thinks ''the one who made the most quilts WINS!" , but I have come to understand that it is fulfilling and useful to keep a record of what was made and when. If only to make it easier to find a photo when one's photo files are lost in an electronic crash. So on we go:

Note: This past year, I only joined one sewalong, a goal I had set, as sewalongs are so tempting but terribly stressful. ///I made two quilts specifically for other recipients, including taking their wishes into consideration in the design process. ///And I gave away four quilts, the three mentioned here, plus Quilts of the American Revolution, made back in 2015-ish. It's very hard for me to part with quilts so that was a big deal to me.

2020 QUILTS ~

Final binding and presenting of the T-shirt quilt. I didn't receive so much as a text or email from the young woman I made it for. It was made for a best friend's daughter, my friend who never ever lets me down--so I decided pleasing her was sufficient.

"Bitty" It was hard for me to give Bitty away, but she is gone now. I loved making her, bringing the idea to life. Hand appliqued, hand quilted.

Little Tree, a sewalong for Holiday 2019 by TQC. Finished as planned after the hols were over.

This Fall I added the hopeful Red Bird.

Blue Baskets/ Cheddar Handles--a few years in the making, a sewalong at Humble Quilts. My pattern and design/ idea. Sometimes I like this quilt, some days it is just a big fat yawn. Took a very long time and much concentration. Setting rescue via Penny in S Africa.

**Around this time March, April, May, most quilt sewing stopped while I---we all--frantically made masks for the Covid 19 pandemic, as masks were not available to buy. It was mindless, depressing work, but supposedly would save our loved ones.

Tiny Coins, one of the Lucky Horseshoes series. Leftovers from Blue Baskets. "End of Day" quilt.

Almost Almost Amish, a Humble Quilts sewalong. I hand quilted it as summer began and was grateful for the 2019 project ready and waiting for  2020 deck time with Mo.

Tiny Baskets [of Hope and Blessings], a sewalong by Julie Porter of Farmhouse Cottons.

A Day in the Country, also known as "Year"--took two years. Vintage pattern by Sarah Sporrer, a gift from Penny. I love this quilt, has so much fun with it.

Starry Eyed Jack 💗💗💗!!!  pattern by Jan Patek, wild colors by me.

Crow in The Melon Patch  begun by a swap friend, given unfinished to me.  I put it together, added my Crow and Flag, quilted it. Fun and successful.

Baby Pineapples a gift for friends' baby girl, her ''big girl/ someday'' quilt. My design as requesed.

Lucky ABC Sawtooth, part of the Lucky series. ABC means ''antique block challenge''; my block, treasured unused for years. Lori of HQ November challenge. I love it. My floating borders were criticised but again, they please me.

Shirley's Christmas, top by Shirley Funke: a rescued vintage top c. 1988. Found on FB Marketplace. Despite some qualms and criticisms I still love it. Yes, the green is ghastly but so what? Look at Kitty! I'll give it its own finished post next week. I sewed the last stitches as the Ball dropped in a deserted Times Square NYC.

Oher projects---below: this textile collage , a kit from French General, something cheery for dark sad days. I love the result.

A label hand embroidered by my friend L, for Tiny Baskets. We were hopeful by late summer; maybe Covid days were ending soon? [little did we know Thanksgiving would be cancelled, then Christmas Day, then New Years Eve. But for just a month or two in late summer 2020, a sign of hope?]

And so another year has come and gone. The Tree is gone, the house is again blue and white.
The future is...?

Love to you all!

ps I think Shirley's quilt will look great folded in my stack of Christmas quilts.

  1. I don't know if you get tired of me saying it, but I really enjoy having another look at your quilts and other projects.

I love the red bird on Little Tree, and Shirley's quilt is looking so happy! I had forgotten about the pillow! I don't remember if you told us how Baby Pineapple was received by it's recipient? I remember that t-shirt quilt not being easy.

Thanks for sharing, it was a fun seeing everything :)

  2. What beautiful quilts. All of my crafting stuff has been packed away for our move next week, but I look forward to making a start on a new quilt in our new home.

My favourite of yours is "Bitty". You must sew all day long btw!

    1. Hi! Most of these quilts were worked on over two or three years! In the winter I do machine sewing, maximum 1 hour per day due to hip pain ; late spring thru autumn I do hand sewing outdoors, again usually just an hour at the most. Baby Mo, my pug, knows the routine and gets very upset if I do not follow that schedule. I hand sewed ''Shirley's'' binding the other night and he was horrified, lol. In the living room! I like to hand sew where I can see the beach and ocean as I sew or knit.

Good wishes on your big move and happy new year!

      love

  3. What a lovely array of finished 2020 quilts...
I have never done a review (didn't keep track of finishes usually!) of yearly quilt making myself. But I enjoy reading about them...

You made such a fabulous group of different types of quilts--despite the Covid debacle and our political worries you managed to "quilt" through it all. Congratulations on a productive year... Great works Hugs Julierose

  5. YAY! I love seeing what quilts you completed in 2020! That is ridiculous for anybody to say anything about your antique block floating borders. I love it and it is just what our ancestors would have done in some cases!! Defund the quilt police!! LOL
    Happy New Year once again.

  6. I'm with Lori, defund the quilt police or better yet block them from following your blog! I love to see others' year-end compilations but I'm too lazy to do one myself, though I do post them when finished on a separate page of the blog. I think my favorite from this year might be those cheddar and blue string baskets, love love them! And that green Christmas quilt is wonderfully quirky with the kitty block! You got a lot finished last year!

  8. Quality is better than quantity, and your quilts are wonderful - and you did a LOT! I would have a hard time giving away a quilt, too. Don't think I realized you gave away Bitty! I liked all your quilts, especially the baskets and the Christmas quilt (I love the kitty!). I'd be thrilled if I could accomplish even 1/4 as much as you in a year!

Love that Mo keeps you on your schedule, lol!

    Thanks for sharing!

  9. Aww..., I love these end up the year wrap ups. So much fun seeing where your creative energy went during the year! I love Bitty as you know. Probably my all time fave of your quilts. The basket quilt is so lovely too, not a big yawn at all! And so many smaller sweet makes too. Would love to see the green Christmas quilt up close and personal as it just has a lovely joyful feeling to it. So glad you rescued it!:)

  11. I find it hard to choose just one favourite quilt of yours. Bitty, Baskets of Blessings and a Month in the Country are all winners, but then so is the cheddar handled baskets. Time to give up choosing. Love them all!
I don't do quilt police in any form.
The picture of your quilting with a view and the 'supervisor' is wonderful.

  12. I agree about it being a good thing to do an end-of-the-year post, if only to remind one's self that, yes, I actually did more than just that last quilt during November and December.
I love Bitty and I hope whoever has her loves her, too.
Your baskets still look great to me, as do A Day in the Country and your pineapples quilts. Your coins and antique block quilts are charming, too. Love them.
That ghastly green is one of the greens I love. I'm looking forward to your post about this quilt to see the fabrics the quilter used. Do most of the light background fabrics have red and green, too?
