First was a trip to the local shoe repair man; we are being asked to please patronize local small shops like this and my new LL Bean boots needed a stretching. L had to double park as I went in; maybe business would improve if there was anywhere to park?
Then onto the new Dollar Store. Keep in mind we have never been to a Dollar Store, lol. It did open, replacing Pier One. It has the rare attribute in our town of having a parking lot and good curb parking too.
The store was---okay. Not impressive. They did have a selection of holiday decor and on another day I might rummage through.
There were NOT all the crafts and usable house tchotkas that are featured in FB craft videos. And oddly nothing was a dollar---everything, even a card of hair clasp, $2.99 s was much more.
I was very happy to see the large sewing and knitting supplies aisle.
No more driving an hour to Joann's for thread or a zipper or knitting needles.
I liked the doggy beds and the fry pans, and I thought the NYC souvenirs were fun to use for sewing kits for friends or swap recipients.
I bought nothing. L bought scrunchies.

At the market the Halloween ales are now replaced with winter beers. Always fun to see, good marketing. I am guessing the beers are all the same, just different cases? But as a non beer drinker, I am not sure--I know varieties of beer abound. And I remember bock beer [though not a fall beer], prized by my parents, especially loved by my mom. bock beer

And then. Over the bridges! Into the real world we went. Look at that blue ocean, softly amber marshes.
View as we waited out the drawbridge. These dense messy shrubs are bittersweet, and will be beautiful orange in a few weeks when the berries pop open at Thanksgiving.
We only had a half hour to spend at Home Goods. Poor planning as the store was absolutely stuffed with wonderful Christmas treasures. click photos to enlarge for details
Such fun. So much more but we ran out of time.
L said too, "It almost feels like old times." We needed that joy!
Have a good rest of the weekend!

gone to the beach....
What a lovely shopping foray you had...I haven't been to any stores (except grocery) since March...I miss Home Goods especially; around here it has the nicest selection --almost like an old fashioned variety store.
ReplyDeleteLove those mercury glass gourds--so pretty...
An outing like that can certainly lift the spirits...hugs, stay safe now Julierose;()
So happy you were able to get out for a fun day with your friend! Our lives remain very quiet, only outings are the necessary food shopping, church and our weekly quilt ministry. Big windstorm here today, we expect to lose power at some point. It will probably head to your end of the state by tomorrow. Thanksgiving is coming!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great shopping trip! We do not have a Home Goods so it was fun to see what they have. Lots of pretty items. Your weather looked great. I hope you get to go back. Kit
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had some fun times out and about, very nice for a change! Sorry you were disappointed in the Dollar Store - I didn't realize that was the name or I could have told you it was just a small variety store. Around here nearly every small town here has a similar one called Dollar General. They seem to mostly round prices to the nearest half dollar, sometimes a bargain and sometimes more expensive than other places but they are convenient. The Dollar TREE stores are the ones that everything is $1. There are probably a few others, but Dollar Tree stores are pretty widespread now and you can even shop online. (https://www.dollartree.com/) I haven't shopped online there YET, but I have looked.
ReplyDeleteWe are back to Fall weather here - highs in the 50s and chilly nights! Pretty weather, though.
I don't know if you and your readers follow the news much, but I've heard from several sources that a trucker's strike is planned starting Nov. 29th, so you may want to plan for that just in case.
Good luck for all your Thanksgiving plans!
A dollar store makes for a poor substitute for Pier One. I am glad you were able to enjoy your foray out in the real world and take us with you virtually. The Home Goods store sounds lovely, and the beach scenery even more so.
ReplyDeleteEven if life isn't "normal" it sure is nice to have that feeling! We (my 2 kids and hubby) went out to a leisurely spaced out dinner for birthday and it was so nice and relaxing! That doesn't happen much anymore. Now Oregon is back on lockdown for 2 weeks. aargh!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you got that fun joyful feeling, with your friend, out shopping. I think this year is just wearing on us. Mo looks cozy, sleepy (and that's such a pretty pillow).
ReplyDeleteWhat fun for you and L! The 'familiar' stuff sure makes me melancholy these days. Hope you can make it back to Home Goods soon. I feel like stores are starting to get more crowded with holiday shoppers. TJ Maxx had a line waiting this weekend, eeek! Better get our shopping done extra early.
ReplyDeleteLove those trees at Home Goods, and your gourd, too! I agree, those red ornaments were too red. I was assuming you were getting a Dollar Tree.
It was in the 80's and 90's here the last few days. Whew! Always wierd to try to get into the holiday spirit when it's that hot.
Thanks so much for the outing ;) Wishing you an uneventful, low anxiety clinic visit.
Kel
It looks like you have a fun dollar store, even if everything isn't a dollar. Are you old enough to remember when stores were called "the five and ten" or "the nickle and dime" store? They had such names as Woolworth's and Murphy's. I guess inflation requires that we not call stores like those dollar stores.
ReplyDeleteThere was a Home Goods store in Rehoboth Beach but we didn't see it till the last day and didn't have time to stop.
What a beautiful view while crossing the bridge, and I like your photo over the wall, too.
I love bittersweet but it is nearly impossible to find here in our area of Ohio. The farmers cut it from the fences as they cut weeds. If we happen to find it at a farmer's market it's very expensive. I wish I had a few seeds because I think I would plant them.
I hope your Monday treatment day wasn't awful and that your week was better than you thought it would be.
