Baby Pineapples ~ A Finish!

Good morning! I have a sweet and cheerful quilt finish to share on this dismal day.  [Must I put away my shorts and flipflops? Already!?  A quote from friend Mel: "Summer disappeared so quickly---unused." How sad is that.]

The good news is Baby Pineapples [BP] is finished except its very minimalist label with the the child's first name and the year. The parents/ recipients do not like my sappy ''wishes and hopes'' type labels AT ALL, as many people do not.

The magic of the washing and drying final quilt step! Scary but it made this quilt come alive.

The quilting is lovely, hibiscus flowers, just what I asked Lori C to do, but the result was a little flat and plastic.

The flowers showed up beautifully, unwashed.

But here it is after washing and drying! I love the texture and dimension.

This is the inspiration fabric, used on the back, oddly boho but fun for a tropical princess's big girl room.

Beautiful rose, soft green, and mango

Some pineapples in batik snuck in.

I forgot to press the binding before hanging the quilt for photos. It will be smooth when ironed. The 1" wide binding, which I haven't done in years, was oddly difficult
, as were the modernist mitered corners, ugh.

The quilt ''could'' have been  bigger---it is twin sized now.  Here it on the wall. Bigger than a crib quilt anyway.

But this used every scrap of the grey and turquoise solids, so hard to source during the earliest crisis days of the pandemic, back in March and April. I think I ordered every pale grey available to online quilters, but none were a match. Ugly and uglier. The pool blue used all but about 6" left of the binding, so I guess the size is meant to be. I am guessing the child will be clamoring for Disney Princess of the year as soon as she fits her big bed anyway. Maybe the mom can use this as a throw?

I used my own pattern, drawn out on graph paper.

I plan to make this again in blue and white. I was going to do paper pieced spiky stems but I am working on a small project with paper templated cable stitching and the paper removal is a nightmare. Hard to tear off, messy, ugly. So now I m not sure. The original pieced stems were tedious but easy.

A project for a snowy day.

*********

I cut the last few summer flowers yesterday because a storm may be coming. They are sweet but what a poor showing I had this year.

**********************

My Jeep had a flat tire yesterday. So stressful. Why do cars no longer have spares? Seems it was maybe just  the colder temps creating low inflation, but I'll be venturing out now. How scary! Must grocery shop before the big rains come tomorrow.

********************

Mo has been practicing wearing his costume all week. I didn't tell him there is probably no celebration this year. Usually we parade around the block, giving out doggy treats and and Reese's cups to other dogs and parents.

Another simple joy bites the dust of the new virus world.

I made a few new painted shells for the Covid support art installation. Didn't put the out yet as the flat tire wasted all of yesterday. I slathered the designs with clear-dry Mod Podge. Will the ''permanent'' markers' color survive?

  1. I love how the quilt came out! You never know, it could end up being the girl's favorite thing to cuddle with!

Looking forward to seeing your blue and white version, too.

How annoying to find your tire flat! Hopefully they checked it for a leak and didn't just air it up. The cold here had my tires' air pressure get pretty low, but I was due for a rotate and balance so that took care of it, yay! It's cold and raining and gloomy out, I didn't want to try airing them up myself!

Mo looks cute in his hat! I think you ought to go for a walk with it on, anyway - maybe have treats to offer fellow walkers as they can always decline. Sometimes the gesture is what's most appreciated.

Hope you don't get too bad a storm! And I'm glad to see you saved your blossoms!

If the markers fade, they have paint pen sets on Amazon - they show people painting rocks with them (which sounds like fun, but what would I do with them?) so they should last a little longer I would think.

    Have a good evening!

  2. Oh, Lizzy, it looks so good after the wash and dry. Just fabulous! I remember the quilted hibiscus flowers were so strong after it was quilted and now they just fit right in. Congrats on a wonderful quilt finish!
I really like the wide binding. I don't think it would work on a quilt that doesn't have a border but how great it looks on this quilt!
Beautiful flowers, even though you had only a few. And so sorry about your flat tired. I surprised a Jeep doesn't have space for a spare somewhere in the back.

  3. Your pineapple quilt is great! It really washed up perfectly. The hibiscus flowers are great. Your bright whimisical pineapples against the grey - really effective. Congratulations on a cheerful finish!

  4. Be proud of your pineapples. The quilt is lovely with the wide binding frame and the quilting is perfect.
The birds on the beach are so at home.
    Keep safe. Penny

  5. Pineapples turned out beautifully--just a really lovely finish on this one.
Hoping the heavy rains give us a miss; but pretty likely to get them here. Our barometer arrow is moving down down down...ominous...
Mo looks so cute in his little hat...
No more Halloween with Covid cases on the uptick here...I think none of our holidays this year will be the same.
Take care and stay safe...sorry about your flat tire...that's no fun!!;000

  7. Wow! That pineapple quilt is amazing! I especially love the batik pineapples. Isn't it always the case that a newly finished quilt never shows its true personality until its been gently washed and dried. I know a wonderful quilter who never ever washes her quilts, even the ones she's had for years. She just puts them in a cool dryer for 5 or 10 minutes. Pretty much pristine just as they came from the long-armer but very flat.

  8. I don't know anything about quilting. But I think this looks fantastic!

  9. Adding a P.S. to my comment... Most cars do have a spare tire still, but some of them do a great job of hiding it! The van I drove for the transportation company had it underneath the vehicle up between the front seats! It would be hell to get that thing out if you had a flat on a muddy road! My car has it under the deck in the back hatch....I think. Maybe that was the last car. Maybe I should look!

Have a good evening! Hope the storm treats you nicely.

    1. My Jeep def does NOT have a spare, the dealer made a pint of telling me when I got it. 27% of new cars have no spare.

  10. What a treat to be greeted by this lovely quilt today :) It really is something special. I hope it's recipient leans away from the usual Disney stuff, and loves your quilt for many, many years.

Hah, almost didn't see the little hat on Mo's head. Look forward to seeing him all suited up for Halloween.

I had a flat tire this week, too! Well, a slow leek. I actually do have a spare, but it's one of those little donut things. My husband made me take his car to work because he thought mine looked too embarrassing with the tiny tire, lol.

    Happy little shells :)
