Songbirds and Flower Seeds

Hi! It is Friday---again. Today was the first warm day of the year, with mainland temps in the 70s and here in the low 60s. But very beautiful bright sunshine. It's been too cold to plant but as today is May 15, it is getting to be a now or never kind of thing. I had been so happy to find not only the white envelope with zinnia seeds but another manila envelope with many seed packs.

Ha, joke is on me. I  had forgotten that I saved the empty seed packs from previous years as I experiment with growing from seed instead of buying pre-grown plants.

Almost all the packs were empty! How disappointing.

And what I thought were zinnia seed heads is one zinnia and one small undeveloped sunflower head. Not going to get much from those.

I did find a full package of the Save the Bees mix, from when I gave the packs away with my Bees inspired lavender sachets.

The last of the love-in-a-mist seeds from Mel. I added them to the mix.

The three big pots were all prepped with weeds pulled and new soil. One pot got the elephant ear bulb and bulbettes, from last summer, plus the amaryllis plant that I'm recycling.

One pot has  red lilies planted a few years ago; they have increased and filled the big pot, along with the volunteer coreopsis, back again this year, though less volume of plants. I put some of the zinnia seeds around the edges of the lilies because once they bloom, they die off quickly. My hope is that the zinnias will fill in.

And the last big pot got the rest of the zinnia seeds, the sunflower head, and the Bees seeds and nigella. That will be my main growing garden this year. I eliminated all the extra and smaller pots, I just could not keep up with toting three large watering cans out there, twice a day, from May to November. Too much work, the weight of the watering cans hurts my hips. If I'd known however that I'd be here isolating all summer Id have chosen otherwise I think.

I sill would like to find a solar fountain.

After the seed planting, Mo and I sat out for an hour of sewing.

He is still being bad mannered and hypervigilent.

''All'' the people going by, talking, laughing, biking, even scootering!---it is so different from the quiet winter days. I bought this gadget, a high frequency noise maker that is supposed to interrupt a dog's focus and stop their barking. But I'm afraid to use it, what if Mo finds the sound painful? I wouldn't hurt him for the world, better to put him inside to nap instead. I don't think his barking is so bad--he is, after all, just  protecting me and his home--- but I have one neighbor who complains asap at the very first yap.

I stopped today's deck clean up in favor of the sewing; the wind really picked up by  afternoon.. Too windy for my table and umbrella to be out. Gale off the ocean, maybe 35-40 mph.

You may recall Mo is afraid of wind. He also didn't like the flickering lights as the electricity hung on/off by a thread. So he built himself this little fort/ nest on the sofa that has its back to the big window wall. Out of sight , out of mind, he napped away the sunset hours.

....................

This week I made the Songbird pincushions using the embroidered state bird blocks I found on FB Marketplace.

The embroidery is so beautifully done, shame the quilt was cut up [not by me!].

The Bluebird is for me,

The cactus wren is for a friend in Arizona. I'm picturing her bringing it to her weekly applique sewing group [how fun is that!] when that resumes. My friend's grandma made beautiful state bird embroidered quilts, so I hope she likes my idea and finds it useful, along with sweet memories.

I added a vintage celluloid acorn to the wren's beak. I don't think they have acorns in AZ, but I love the button, have saved it for years.

I have small metal bar plaques that say something like Creativity is a Gift, not sure if I'll add.

The backs are this favorite brown fruit print.

I filled the pincushions with  fiberfill and some plastic beads for weight, because my friend has allergies. I'd like to try the walnut hull filling someday, but that is for next time, I suppose.

Earlier this week, after I wrote about this FG project here on my blog, I decided I better get it started in case I needed a hand work project soon.  My version, below, so far only fused. [wow, awesome fusible!. I'll add the name of the fusible later, and/ or it is mentioned on the FG website in my previous post.

The design went together really easily. There were only the 5 needed large flower pairs available , so there wasn't much to think about. Added some little ditsy daisies to fill in. The left side especially looks a little bare, but it will get embroidered buds and there's also the antique button flowers that will balance out the composition, I think.

..........................................................................

As your state and county reopen, I hope you all will be cautious and stay well. I know I won't be safe for weeks or months and was so sad today as I cancelled my early June thrifting date with B and my birthday dinner planned for L.  I sure miss my friends, good thing I have you guys!

Have a good weekend!

PS I must show you blog friend Julierose's tiny Blue Baskets. I had sent her some scraps, including blues form my Blue Basket. [quilters love to swap fabrics, such a treat.]. Aren't her little 7 1/2" Baskets just darling. She has such a unique style always.  Julie's blog

  1. I bought a jar of crushed walnut shells 5 or 6 years ago at the yearly quilt show in Melbourne and finally used them last week. I padded the inside of a napkin ring and made a pincushion using them and also replaced the filling of the pincushion I use at the sewing machine. What a great difference it has made. I also love the weight that has been added from the walnut shells.
My friend had Hollyhocks this summer and when they were dying off I got a couple of seed heads. There are eight little seedlings coming up, so I’ll look forward hopefully to some flowering next year. Your embroidery pincushions are lovely.

  2. I sewed some more Love in a Mist last week and they are coming through now (I have been diligently watering as it has been pretty warm and then cold and windy (grrr) here but no rain.) They are filling a gap beside other LIAMist. My mum used to grow them so they remind me of childhood.

Sorry your seed collection was mostly empty aide-memoire packets! We have seed trays in a polytunnel and the rackety plastic greenhousse, slowed this season by hot days and cold nights, then a FROST this week (in May?!)

I love your embroidered bits of quilt - perhaps it was too badly damaged to be salvaged entire and had to be cut up - or else someone thought they may make more money that way . . . Beautiful embroideries, both. Your friend will love that little Cactus Wren.

I have just been working another block on the unfinished hexi quilt I got from a charity shop (thrift store with you I think). I am prettifying it to donate to a charity which gives one nice thing to girls leaving care homes with nothing.

Have you tried clicker training with Mo? I have friends who have used it with dogs, and we have used it with horses and it does work. It is a positive reward type training (and my bolshy pony would do anything for treats!) Give it a whirl.

    1. Hi! I saw your redo quilt you're working on, on your blog. I can't imagine redoing hexagons for a quilt to donate, good for you!

Yes I try to think the cut uo quilt bits are all that are left of a quilt. And better to use what is left and enjoy it, give it a new life.

    2. PS I will look into clicker training for Mo. Gerally he is very good and well trained, but I ll try anything. Actually the ultrasonic device is supposed to be similar to he clicker but silent to humans so less annoying, but I feel uncomfortable not hearing what Mo hears.

  3. Thanks so much for the shout-out;))) Today I will resume making my 4th of July baskets...

Those little bird pillows are so lovely--great use for those embroideries...

It is still windy here this morning--poor little Mo--I don't much like windy sounds either, so I can empathize...

I saved seeds from last year's marigolds and am
patiently (well not so much !) waiting for weather and soil to warm up enough to plant some. Not being able to visit garden centers is tough this year...and just going out for a ride "around" doesn't thrill me much.

I hear a lot of birds this morning (speaking of birds) chirping about...perhaps Spring has finally come here...hope so

  4. I bought a solar fountain from Amazon. The problem I had with it- my bird bath wasn't deep enough so all the water splashed out

  5. Love your FG project! So very sweet. I always think I'm going to plant less flower pots the next year and then it doesn't happen. You'll probably appreciate it when doing the watering.:) Julie's baskets are wonderful. Love that you gifted her some scraps!

  6. Your little birdie pincushions are so pretty, almost too pretty to stick pins into them. I bought a bag of walnut hulls along with a pattern several years ago, I suppose one day they might see the light of day. Gibbs goes nuts with barking every time anyone shows up here, he's so anxious about everything that he may never outgrow it. Very sad. He shook so badly when we took him to the vet for his annual checkup this week. Refused to even get out of the truck. Very hard to drag 75 pounds of dead weight, let me tell you. Let us know if you figure out a good remedy for the barking.

  7. I love the pincushion pillows, they are so pretty and a nice way to save those bits of a quilt. I'm sure your friend will love hers!

I wish you'd let me know about your missing seeds - I've probably got 10-20 packs of various things around here that I've bought and not used. Some are years old but you can never tell, some seeds stay good for a LONG time! I would have sent them to you!

Do you think Mo's barking on the deck is anxiety? (I think your neighbor needs a life, a dog barking during the day is NOT a big deal!) And I can't say I blame him for not liking the wind! Have you tried treats made for anxiety? My daughters cats had major anxiety issues for a while; one would never come out and another one licked all the fur off her belly. I found some treats they would eat that were like kitty Valium, they got much more relaxed, and after a while they settled down and didn't even need the treats anymore. I'll send you a Chewy link...QB might like some of them, too, for going to the vet!

Julierose's baskets are very cute and so different from yours! Fun to see! I like her 'background' fabric, too - seems to be little red teacups on white? At first I thought they were hats, lol.

I think solar fountains are cool, too - what are you going to put it in? I keep seeing an ad for them on Pinterest, but I'm sure Amazon has them - maybe other mail-order places, too. I hope you can find one!

    Take care!

  8. Oh how exciting to be planting!! I think I will run out next week for my plants. With mask and gel. I love your pincushions! So pretty. 😊 Kit

  9. Your deck flowers are always riotous and colourful.
Both your and Julierose's basket quilts are looking very good. well done.
I'm very interested to read about a remedy for cat snxiety-licking. My daughter's cat is doing this exact thing at the moment. Through a process of elimination and vet visits, anxiety and over-stimulation by her owners working from home during lockdown, we came to the same conclusion. Maybe some similar medication or tempting diversion would work with Mo?
Those pincushions are beautiful as they keep the spirit of their creator while the addition of your vintage buttons adds a special touch. Penny

  10. Such sweet pin cushions. Your friend will be tickled to get theirs. Fun to see Julierose's baskets.

    Oh pooh! Too bad your seed packets are empty. I would love to see you do something creative with them? I look forward to seeing your pots in bloom. They will be beautiful,,,you have a way ;

Unless a dog is barking incessantly, I kind of dig it. I find it comforting. In the last month or so, three of our neighborhood doggies have gone over the Rainbow Bridge. Gogo was my favorite and I am sad that I will never see his owner walking him INSIDE TJ Maxx again :( Happy news is that one of the families had a puppy delivered (from a rescue org) on Friday! They live just a few doors down, and new puppy, named Rugelach, LOVES our yard...win, win :)

Glad to hear you're getting some deck time.

  11. Such a wonderful way to use those state bird blocks. The pincushions are so unique and sort of quirky in the best way. Love the addition of that special acorn. It's nice that you have flowers/gardening going. Stay safe and healthy. It's been interesting to see how things are more or less opening up in the U.S. In Tokyo everything's been closed and people are really united in keeping the rules (masks, avoiding closed spaces and crowds, hand washing, etc.) and cases have been dropping every day.

  12. Mo is too cute for words!💖

  13. Your "acorn button" on the Arizona pin cushion could be interpreted as a Sombrero instead. Just a thought. So cute! Love old buttons and what stories they could tell!

    1. I love it! That the acorn is a tiny sombrero, how adorable. I too love the stories I imagine about old buttons.
