Baby Pineapples Quilt

Hi friends, another Monday, as April slowly rushes by.

Well this is discouraging - all the photos in my recent blog posts have gone lost on Blogger. I don't know if I should reload them or just let it go. Usually they return but these seem truly lost. I love to do photos for my blog, but they're a lot of work, so that is many hours lost. How annoying.

This weekend was typically springlike---cold and windy, so I got quite a lot done on the Baby Pineapples project. Here are some of the inspiration quilts, though I made my fruits smaller and drew my own pattern.

I made my planned eight blocks:

They go together quickly and are, I think, cute.

This is the layout I had planned.

Lots of grey spacing and wide grey borders with a turquoise frame border, to make a medium sized crib quilt. Small enough to use as a play mat or even hang on a wall, since the child's room is quite large, until she is old enough to use it for naps.

Her crib will become a daybed around age two? but then it also becomes a twin headboard. As I showed the mom the design, she indicated that she wanted a larger quilt that might work on the future twin bed even. This is difficult and confusing, as crib mattresses are very narrow and oddly long at 25" x 51" --a twin quilt would be far too much fabric and unsafe.

We compromised by deciding on this layout,

which will need 18, not 8! blocks, and will be a random size somewhere between crib and twin. Much tighter spacing, narrow or no borders? Use the turq for binding?

Because of course by the time the child can talk clearly she will instead want whatever TV cartoon thing is popular. [Dora the Explorer, My Little Pony, Power Puff Girls? I am out of touch... but I'm sure there will be something she wants instead of Pineapples. (I remember making my son, aged about three, the cutest western, Ralph Lauren-ish, bedding, and he hated it! He just wanted some superhero junk sheets from Walmart!]

The quilt will be more throw size or lap quilt size, so it can be used in the home or as a beach blanket when the little one's taste outgrows it.

Later I'll choose ten more Pineapples and cut all those greens.

The good news is I think it is very pretty in a subtle way. We all love the turquoise ''stop border'' or frame border. The baby's room is palest aquamarine seaglass color, too pale for a stop border, so this picks it up in a slightly punchier way. [sigh] Just a six week lag in fabric orders, as warehouses follow distancing requirements now.

............................

Out and about: My neighbor finally took down her Christmas wreath and put up her silk sunflower wreath.  She only has two, so we see them for quite a spell each season. I felt a bit hopeful seeing her summery vibe.

Another neighbor put up a lovely herb wreath but they have left their Christmas candles [electric] burning in their windows all winter and spring. So pretty and so comforting when I walk Mo at bedtime in the cold dark night.

And Mo and I saw a robin! The quiet days must have made it come for a visit, if not to nest. I haven't seen a robin here in years---we have few songbirds; conditions are too harsh.

Welcome to new readers/ commenters! I hope you all have good week. Is the stay at home thing becoming more normal feeling or you're getting the house arrest blues? I hope you all are well.

love

  1. As I scrolled through your posts for the last month or 6 weeks I only saw 3 or 4 posts with any missing photos. Even though most of the photos are now missing there are a few that remain on each post. Seems like the issue went on for maybe two weeks because everything earlier seems to be intact. Other bloggers are reporting this issue as well as commenting issues, so my suspicion is that it is a temporary glitch. Back to quilting, I love your pineapple blocks and the larger size will make the quilt much more versatile as this little person grows. The soft gentle colors will blend wonderfully with a lot of decor choices as she grows, except for maybe the black wall phase if she ends up being a rebel, lol!

  2. Those pineapple blocks look scrumptious enough to eat ;)) [they remind me of strawberries, mangoes, kiwis]--- a marvelous array!!...

  3. I really enjoy your pineapples The contrast between the large pretty fabric fruit below the prickly pieced leaves is perfect and lets the fabric shine through. Sometimes I think we quilters 'over-piece' blocks.
I deliberate at length over the size of baby quilts which are outgrown so quickly. Your compromise is a good solution.
The black wall/Barbie pink/Little Mermaid scenarios are all too familiar!
I love the idea of your neighbour's light in the window at night - a beacon of hope.
Thank you for sharing your friend's beautiful beach shots. Penny

  5. The soft colors of the pineapples are so nice. They do look easy...hmmm...promises of warmer weather affording the ability to sit outside are not coming fast enough. Love to you and Baby Mo

  7. Your pineapple quilt is gorgeous. I love all the colours and fabrics.
I've been enjoying my audio books while hand sewing for a change.
I had to venture out today and go to the bank. It was empty and no queue! that's a first. I also got asked as the door slid opened 'are you well' and 'why do you need to come in'. How things have changed. The local patchwork shop is open for three hours, so that one can browse you phone her and she gives you a time to come. I was there less than 2mins as I only needed a reel of thread. Stay well.

  8. I couldn't love your pineapples more! Sooooo cute. But, gurl, you have more work to do, haha. Like the inspiration quilts, too. The window pane one, especially. And, the pillow. See, I hadn't even considered that warehouses have to worry about distancing, duh, didn't even occur to me.

Love the idea of the candles in the windows. I have heard of some neighborhoods that were encouraging people to put their Christmas back up.

Beautiful shots of the ocean. Sequin waves, indeed, sigh. Hope you get back out soon so you can see them in person.

    Hugs Lizzy,

    Kel

  9. Your pineapples and the colors and fabrics are wonderful, Lizzy. I like them so much. The fabrics, especially the pale pink/peach one bottom center in the first photo, are so beautiful.
Choosing a size can be a challenge and I know what you mean about children wanting quilts with superheros or Disney characters, or whatever.
Even if baby doesn't like the quilt you know mom will and, I find, that if mom likes the quilt (book, toy, whatever) she'll use it and baby will enjoy it until old enough to make up her own mind about things.

  10. I love the pineapples!! And you never know, the baby girl may grow up to be a little different and actually prefer the cool quilt to factory-made junk bedding. I'm SURE it will feel better! Plus no one else will have one the same! I will look forward to seeing it finished!
