My Winter Garden

Good evening! Another Friday is here and almost gone. We've had high winds all day, 65 mph.  The wind is so strong the water in Mo's bowls is sloshing. Mo is unhappy, he is afraid of wind.

We went out just now to see the sunset and the almost-full moon. February Full moon on Sunday is the Snow Moon, and also supposedly a super moon when the full moon is closest to Earth and may appear up to 30% larger.

I must update you on my winter bulbs, at their two week stage. [photos were taken Monday and yesterday/ Thursday]. The bulbs take quite awhile to get going, I don't know if I have mentioned that. If you ever grow bulbs indoors in water---be patient. For two weeks I had only only brown bulbs and old roots, so imagine my surprise and pleasure when, on Monday morning [Feb 2] ---when I got up to look at the ocean and to admire my rainbows in the early sun---I found that ALL the bulbs had sprouted overnight!

Always a thrill.

Even the amaryllis is going great, has two nice, medium sized buds so far and lots of roots. Fingers crossed!

I let them grow quietly for a few days, then moved the containers out for display on Thursday.

And in my grocery store, February means the first cut branches. Had to have some pussy willows. If not watered they will dry and last all spring, or they can be watered and will bloom like little yellow bumble bees full of pollen, and later will form roots and leaves for your yard.

I left mine dry this year.

On a quilty note, the good news is that I figured out what was wrong with Blue Baskets' settings and I think I have it fixed.  Very hopeful again, maybe I'll have the center of the top done this weekend, yay! [early pic, just to remind you what Blue Baskets looks like.]

Have a good weekend, check out the full moon on Sunday.

  1. So many hopeful signs of spring! It's always amazing to me how quickly those bulbs can sprout up and grow. One of nature's mysteries. We got a lot of snow, probably 9 or so inches overnight and this morning. So happy I didn't have to go anywhere today, all the schools were closed so you know the roads were bad. Happy weekend!

  3. We haven't had much snow this year and the temperature keeps going back and forth from frigid to warm... I don't know that I'm ready for spring yet, time sure seems to be passing quickly this year!

  7. Your bulbs look fantastic! And I love your swan as well. Those string pieced baskets are wonderful as well.

    1. Thanks! Yes, I am very fond of the swan, which I've had many many years. From PA flea. I like it because it is a real decoy [handcarved], with a weighted metal clad underside and a heavy loop/ eye bolt and chain where it was once anchored in a pond or bay.

  8. Anticipating of all the lovely blooms from the bulbs is the same as the waiting to see your basket quilt solution - both results will be equally exciting. What fun. Penny

  9. One of nature's miracles. The bulbs look healthy and happy and ready to bring us joy.

I'm getting to this late, so I hope your windy weather has calmed down. We've been windy here too. 40 mph gusts on Monday which made for an exciting (?) plane ride.

The pussy willows look great with your star in the background.

    Hugs to you and Mo,

    Kel

  10. I saw pussy willows at Trader Joe's last week and almost bought some. Love yours!
So glad you've figured out how to make your fun blue baskets the way you want them. I'm looking forward to seeing more of them.

  11. Intrepid Mo! Nice to bring some nature inside this time of year. It almost feels like spring in Tokyo. Mild winter, even for here!
