A channel buoy.
It's BIG.
and has all these electronic antennae [that perhaps send signals to ships, plus weather and water info that we can look at on NOAA's website]. and a brilliant red beam.
It usually marks the offshore sandbars so boats don't run aground. I'm not seeing the white or green ones either, maybe they got lose too?
Photos from friends, I haven't gone to see it yet. It's stormy here and so cold.

Mo is hiding again.
I can see the buoy from my house.
At light the light shines brilliantly red.
And here's plover nest nearby. [in the wire cage].

gone to the beach...
PS Mothers Day was lovely, in thought if not in weather.
My son, always wonderfully practical yet imaginative, ordered and installed very bright new LED light bulbs in my sewing room. So wonderful. Very cheering, as well as much cooler, and helpful for seeing details. Environmentally correct too, he says.
PS I'm behind on answering comments and emails, so sorry. Thanks for all the sweet comments and MDay wishes,

Fascinating about that buoy...they really are HUGE. Most likely the New London buoy tender will be out there--at least my hubby thinks so...
ReplyDeleteIt was SO cold here today...more like March than mid-May!! Our seasons are changing for sure--
nice that you got some good lighting--I have to address that in my room too; a single corner pole lamp is not good enough...
Stay warm, hugs, Julierose
Wow about the buoys! Must have been a big storm! I imagine putting them back where they belong is quite the job.
ReplyDeleteSad about the blown eggs/hatchling. Nature is cruel sometimes.
Happy to hear son got you new LED lights!! They may make it easier to tell colors, too, depending on the lights.
Belated happy Mother's day - glad you had a good one!
Wow, that buoy is crazy! And the lights, and antenna! Really interesting. Must have been some storm. So sad to think about the nests and eggs being destroyed, like really, really sad.
ReplyDeletePoor Mo, the wind is not his friend.
I love practical gifts. Good lighting is VERY important, tell your son he did good. Lovely pink tulips too. What are they in?
Hope the weather improves soon.

I am always amazed at the incredible raw power of water and wind. Imagine the force it must have taken to wash that that buoy that must weigh several tons up onto shore. Always an interesting walk for you out on that stretch of beach. Your son was incredibly thoughtful and observant in his choice of a mother's day gift. Lucky you!
ReplyDeleteCool buoy! I want it for my yard...lol Glad you had a good Mom's Day. :) Kit
ReplyDeleteThe power of water! I love the sound of a bouy in the distance.
