Drear December

drear . Synonyms: black, bleak, cheerless, chill, cloudy, cold, comfortless, dark, darkening.

It's mid- December, a quick Saturday check-in, dear friends, before I begin making my snowflake cookies. Yesterday morning my friend L decided she needed new pillows for her arriving houseguests.  It was very cold and dark, but we're brave winter beach girls [or so we pretend].

We hustled off to the big Target, hoping to beat the third snowstorm of the year. One of those December days that never really get light.

The ride over the bay and bridges was so interesting, so silver grey and monochrome.

Winter: summer view at end of post

So dreary and full of impending dark and snow.

Note the snow covered beach on the left, from the previous storm.

I stood in line with a woman who was buying at least 50 bags and boxes of Christmas candy. I was dying to ask her Why? but was afraid I'd offend her if her lonely holiday plans were for a Netflix binge and comfort candy. I buy a box of candy canes every year, just--because. No one eats them, of course.

We made it home to my house just as the first snowflakes blanketed the beach and sidewalks.

Mo and I stayed in. He wore his red Christmas sweater, I  wrote my Christmas cards (just 12 this year!) and sipped a cup of very hot Earl Grey tea. We watched the snow swirl in the streetlights and cover the deck. Far more than the ''snow showers'' being mentioned on the local news!

We didn't venture out until this morning.  Mo pranced around happily.

I admired the brilliant red and green holly. No wonder it is one of the main symbols of the Christmas season!

Oddly everyone's bright yellow forsythia is blooming in the snow and cold. Confused!

And we found one last red autumn leaf.  Fall is over! The solstice is in a few days...

Have a good weekend!

  1. Wow! Brrr. It's cold here but we missed the extra cold temps while on sunny Maui. No snow yet, and none in the forecast. :(
Love the holly with the white snowy background- so pretty! Stay warm!

  2. I'm just so shocked that you're still getting snow already! I hope you've done a little winter stocking-up just in case it gets worse!

Yucky day, but I'm glad you and L got out and back before too much snow fell.

So you're doing snowflake cookies after all? Good luck, and don't forget to show us pictures!

  5. Oh my gosh, with that weather, no wonder you're in a mood:(

The holly is beautiful, especially with the little poofs of snow. And, forsythia, what?

Brought our tree in tonight. Lights, but no ornaments yet. I like it so far though, not tiny like the last few years. Supposed to be writing out cards, but here I sit, messing around online. Oh well.

So sorry about the migraine. Hoping you feel better soon. Thanks for the Saturday post!
