September

Hello! Yes, it  is September, summer has flown by this year. Usually here at the beach August flows seamlessly into September and even October, with endless hot sunny summery days. The only clues of the changing season are earlier darkness and the sun again streaming into the house in the early morning as the it moves slowly south for winter to come.

So imagine our surprise to wake up to bright sun but cold temperatures on September first!

We weren't expecting this! Mo huddled under his fleece blanket at the foot of the bed, curled in a tight little ball.

An oddball cold front has come through, bringing the dragonfly migration and first flocks of tiny birds, as they gather and practice for their journeys south.

On the beach, oystercatchers, still in pairs.

And piping plovers, the tiny birds behind the OCs. I saw only two nest cages this year, how sad.

The ocean is oddly smooth and lake-like, despite rumored storms in the Outer Banks, in the Carolinas.

Looking back over summer days...

The ''blue" dahlia!

And a quote, from Nancy Thayer ~

"September was always an orphan month, not still summer, no yet fall.
When Labor Day passed, people thronged the  ferries and planes,
going back to school, back to work, back to reality."

gone to the beach...

a little off topic:

The dusty turquoise bamboo silk yarn knits up beautifully. It's very soft and silky, maybe will be more controllable with one size smaller needles, in bamboo. [Bamboo needles are less smooth than wood or metal or plastic.]

And this is a pretty dress I ordered from Talbot's big summer sale. It is a beautiful sundress [I have a party to attend], lovely cotton sateen w Lycra. OMG, I looked like a giant crabby toddler in it. Too bad.

Not me! Talbot's online screensho
And here is Mo, awaiting his ice cream despite the cold. He loves the dappled shade from the elephant ear plant. He's a little lion in the deck jungle, he thinks!

Have a good holiday!

Next week I'm having a little sort-of giveaway to celebrate 900 posts here at
the beach.....

  2. It's lovely to see the changing colors of the sky and the ocean. Nothing cool about our weather yet but definitely looking forward to a change from the incessant heat. Happy September.

  5. Great pictures, especially of Mo in the shade. I bet that 55 degree morning was quite a shock! Here in KS it's cooling off, but slowly. Days are plenty warm but not HOT, and the nights are dipping down into the 50s. I love sweater-weather so I love fall when we actually have one! Many years we seem to go from really HOT straight into winter!

I'm glad to hear the silk/bamboo yarn is nice, I haven't played with mine yet!

I hope your weekend is nice, too!

  6. What? 55? Dang! It's stoopid hot here. Has been for a week now. It's making me fussy ;)

The ocean looks so beautiful in all of the pictures. Sad about the plover nests. So much of wildlife is threatened :(

Sorry the dress didn't work for you. Do you have a back up, I hope?

    Love your journal drawing.

    1. Hi! I know it's very hot by you! I hope the LA fires aren t a problem for you?

Dress...I wanted a dress! I haven't worn a dress or a skirt in many many years. Maybe since an Orthodox Jewish wedding [guest!] when I was working still? I have white linen crops and a pretty cardi?

The birds never really returned in full numbers after H Sandy clean up. Birds do not like a manicured beach.

  7. I look at your beach scenes and I am yearning! Actually yearning for cool temps and fresh breezes. We are surrounded by smoke now. :( I have to be patient and wait for some rain to make any difference. Until then I will look at your lovely photos. The lockers are actually in my kitchen. My kitchen used to be the boys locker room....lol I put all the magnets that my kids and friends have given me on them. :) Happy Labor Day! Kit

    1. The lockers are so cool! I thought maybe they were for the students to store stuff while they ate and relaxed. Terrible about the fires out west everywhere. I hope it rains and your lovely garden is ok. [and you all!].

  8. I do love checking on you and Mo, especially when he's full of the 'dog days' of any month!

The beach does seem to be a place the seasons ebb and flow into each other more than other places. So glad the beginning of September was nice!
