Autumn in Blue, with Cheddar Orange

Hello, everyone! Fall has finally arrived at the beach. It's bright and sunny but a chill is in the air.

Cold fronts blowing through have brought many tiny birds to my sky. The most I have ever seen. [click to enlarge so you can see the almost Hitchcockian swarms of birds from this morning.]

Mo was very upset by the birds. Or something. Haunts?

So now that Fall is a reality, I did some indoor styling, just adding hints of colors to my usual color scheme. This year I decided to keep my cottage decor dressed in its standard blue and white, but with easy additions of bright orange, pumpkin, and ''cheddar'' to give a fun Halloween air.

Instead of digging out my brown and sepia transferware, I used deep cobalt blue pitchers, filled with bittersweet and drying sunflowers, along with an indigo blue/ cheddar/ red small quilt.

Some things got moved around to protect them from Mo's current binge of naughtiness, so you may see something twice, same but different.

Always have to have candy corn, filling my grandma's candy jar.

Another antique candy jar, at the back. Handblown,Sandwich glass, early 1800s. Filled with heart shaped cooky cutters and choclate molds.

Most of my pumpkin-colored and also brown glazed bowls reside on this blue rack.

Sunflowers and pineapple drieds.

Projects:

A fall-at-the-beach toned table runner, from Cape Cod Christmas Tree Shop. It's sari cloth remnants with hand sewed couching embroidered seams.

After Halloween I'll start removing the very bright orange pieces and the Jackolanterns, moving towards a more subtle blue and brown palette, maybe, for November.
[below, favorite mini quilt I made many years ago.]

Mark your calendars, guys! Friday we are going to the pumpkin patch. Glorious colors, I promise.

  1. Ooooh! Love the way the house looks! The colors are wonderful. I especially like the display with the little white pumpkins on a small quilt with the starfish in the dish. So unexpected, and so perfect.

Wow, all of those birds. It does look like Fall in the pics. Something about the atmosphere shows through in the photos. Yes, if you tended to be creeped out by lots of birds, this would do it.

I've been meaning to 'Halloween up' my house for a couple of weeks now, but I haven't yet gotten to it. I don't have much, but I do have a very cute, probably faux, mercury pumpkin that has tiny lights inside. I do love it! Love all of yours too.

Look forward to your pumpkin patch post. Do you have to go far?

    1. The angle of the light is so different in the Fall! And more golden.

I hope you get out your mercuryglass pumpkin! Two more days to find it!

  2. While out of town I visited my niece, who is doing a month-long Fall Festival at her house selling pumpkins, gourds, mums, in addition to her own candles, her friend's soaps, fresh eggs, etc. First year but she's been very busy! Always fun to go see pumpkins! The bluish warty pumpkin-shaped gourds are very popular here, they're so ugly they're cute!

I really like the orange touches with the blues! You always make it look so nice. Yes, I need to see a hint of mess so I don't feel so inferior!!

LOL, you always seem to be buying bowls, I've wondered where you kept them all! They look good on the blue shelf.

The photo of the beach from L is just so pretty - the water looks like multi-colored glitter!

I am fascinated and also creeped out by the big flocks of birds in the fall. It's interesting to watch them fly. I think maybe it's because nature is turning colors or brown/dead that the birds seem creepy? Or just because there are too many in one place at one time? It's not so bad if I'm in the house or car, but they are kind of scary if I'm on foot!

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Your niece's fall market sounds so fun! I looked for her website a few weeks ago, she must have changed it.

Large swarms of anything can be creepy. Like one ant or one bumble bee is cute, but hundreds, no, ick! Even my dad's swarms of hummingbirds were a bit scary, lol! They'd arrive en masse when he d walk out with his jug of red nectar for them. My mom was terrified.
Today;s birds were a bit larger and they had white bellies. I don't know what they are, they never stop or land.

  3. Aloha,
I always enjoy your posts. They are always wonderful and endearing. I must say, however, that the last two posts touched me deeply.

The colors, the beautiful projects, your heartfelt memories were all so special.

Thank you so much for sharing.
