Brrrr! Winter Is Here

Hi everyone. Yeesh, it's so cold. I suppose I'll have to give in and put my shorts away. The other day this Weather Alert came up on my phone:
Ice Accretion Advisory from 1/7/2015 6:00:00 PM to 1/8/2015 6:00:00 AM
GALE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT...FREEZING SPRAY ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM WEDNESDAY TO 6 AM * WINDS...NORTHWEST 25 TO 35 KT WITH GUSTS UP TO 40 KT.* SEAS...6 TO 9 FEET

What the heck is a Spray Advisory?

FREEZING SPRAY...MODERATE VESSEL ICING. OPERATING A VESSEL IN GALE CONDITIONS REQUIRES EXPERIENCE AND PROPERLY EQUIPPED VESSELS. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT MARINERS WITHOUT THE PROPER EXPERIENCE SEEK SAFE HARBOR PRIOR TO THE ONSET OF GALE CONDITIONS.A FREEZING SPRAY ADVISORYMEANS THAT LIGHT TO MODERATE ACCUMULATION OF ICE IS EXPECTED ON VESSELS. OPERATING A VESSEL IN FREEZING SPRAY CAN BE HAZARDOUS. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT VESSELS BE PREPARED TO TAKE APPROPRIATE COUNTER MEASURES BEFORE PUTTING TO SEA OR ENTER THE ADVISORY AREA.

I love this huge old anchor.
Fishing boats behind, at their dock.

Things like this remind us that this is indeed a maritime community, with a fleet of commercial fishing boats, plus die-hard sport fishermen, and the large vessels. we see out in the shipping lanes.

And yes, the snow came and the wind howled.

Mo quite likes the snow!

He is not so happy about high winds. The gale makes his leash thrum and frightens him. He sits and looks so perplexed.

Now, in early January, my house is again neutral, currently in its winter garb of white, taupe and black with accents of deep turquoise and some bits of cobalt blue.

I always worry that my small space will look cluttered. But in the pix, it looks quite sparse?

black/ white/ turquoise batik.
How I wish I'd bought many yards of this beauty!

A big brown crock with wintery berries, a fragrant fir-scented candle in a rusty tin star dish.

A favorite blue and white quilt. It's a rescue and quite tattered but I love it.

The cottage is so quiet now, just the wind and Mo's snoring. All its glittery party finery is put away. I love Christmas's Scandinavian red and white, and the Tree, and the glittering glass ornaments...but by January it comes as a relief to return to the tranquil colors of the winter beach.

I haven't changed the transferware plate rack yet. It will soon have my blue and black collection.

I am liking this pine dresser done more simply.

For awhile I think I will keep it simple, with just my white ironstone pitchers and platters, and a few bits of mercury glass.

The tarnished mirrored orbs remind me of the icy winter ocean, gleaming coldly under the pale lemon yellow winter sun.

Now is the time to bundle up and walk briskly, time for savory beef stew simmering on the stove top, for hot chocolate and Earl Grey tea, spiked these afternoons with a thimbleful of peach Grand Marnier, a gift from a friend. Time for hand quilting--and knitting, if only Mo will let me work in peace sometimes.
Hope you too are home safe, and warm, and cozy.

love

gone to the beach....

  1. Oh my gosh. How cute is Mo and how pretty your decor. Your house looks beautiful...looks like a magazine shoot.

I put a quilt on our bed...the low last night was around 60F. LOL.

Thanks for sharing and hugs to Mo.

  2. Brrr is right! I don't like cold weather. It's funny how pets react so differently to different weather conditions. Your living room doesn't look cluttered at all and is quite lovely. I wish I could get to the point of changing things up each month to have a bit of a different look going on but I have sooooooooooooooooooo much stuff. Happy Friday. Tammy

  3. Hah! I too wondered what the heck a spray advisory is.

Mo is so cute out in the snow, I wondered if he would like it. Hard to believe it's his first winter.

The house looks great, so serene and you'd never know you were having freezing temps. The hot chocolate and Earl Grey sound perfect! We've been enjoying a very warm few days which is nice, but you make the cold sound inviting too.

Have a good weekend and enjoy the time to do wintery things.

  4. I don't think your home looks too cluttery at all. It looks very inviting! I don't live near the beach but Oregon is a coastal state so I knew what a spray advisory was. Brrrrr. I like the idea of stew- it snowed overnight and I think I'll fire up the crockpot before going to work.

  5. I only WISH my house was a neat as yours!

Mo looked like he was having fun in the snow! I hope you're staying nice and warm when you take him out - I'm getting to where I really don't like cold, especially with wind. And there's ALWAYS wind here!

I've noticed Spook only really messes with my crochet if I'm using wool or alpaca yarn. He doesn't mess with my acrylic much usually, thank goodness! Of course that might not hold true with Mo as he's still in his feisty puppy stage! I guess you could just get a skein of inexpensive stuff and try it, see what happens...

    Have a good weekend!

  6. +Hi! Yes it s the wind, sometimes it s so frigid and cutting it actually hurts. Not so much when I walk Mo but going from the warm car [oh the heated steering wheel and seats are heavenly!] just into the house, coat not buttoned, mittens AWOL, that s the worst. For walking Mo I wear jeans under windproof Goretex hiking pants, tee shirt then close fitting fleece jacket, optional down vest, and one of my Lands End down parkas. Earmuffs, hood, but I usually forget my gloves. My Merrell hiking clogs are very warm for my feet or if Im in a hurry I ll wear fleece lined Crocs. I probably look lin=ke the Michelin Man but I m warm. I d like to get a pair of those fleecelined leggings to wear udnder my wind pants, they d be cozier than jean.

Im not too thrilled tohave to get all these layers on 4 times a day, but truly it s better for me than brighthot sunshine.

I guess nowhere is as windy as KS but it s windy here, esp in the winter.

  7. Your Pup is so cute and your home looks lovely and inviting for a sit and chat with some warm tea. It is cold everywhere it seems but this bitter bite in the wind is what hurts the face. I only go out if I have to. Have a wonderful new year Lizzy filled with love and laughter and good health..
