Summer's Last Hurrah

Good evening! Just now the sky and ocean and beach put on a lovely show for us, for the last sunset of Summer 2016. I am waxing nostalgic for  a summer that really never was, for me...and ignoring the two more hot months to come.

Instead I enjoyed the moment. What a gorgeous, soft summery sky it was.
Sunset is still my favorite color, and rainbow is second.'' [unattributed quote]

Besides my pt sessions I am taking a short walk every day. I try to go out with Mo and his walker to start.

Of course then they go on and I slowly return home.

Mo and I did look for some signs of Fall. Just one bright yellow leaf, on the very green grass.

Seed heads on the ornamental grasses.

A new and somewhay ugly fountain in a public space. [Seems to me it should be set into the ground with banks of flowers around it.]

When I'm not home for Mo's afternoon walk, I've been walking towards the beach. My goal is to be able to go to the October fleas.

It's very dry this year.

But Monday's thunderburst coaxed the beach roses into bloom.

Rose hips are more likely in September---bright green like tiny Granny Smith apples.

In the dunes are large flocks of odd carrier pigeons. hey find something there to feed on, and leave many tiny tracks in the soft white sand. Autumn migrations have begun.

Goodbye, sweet Summer. Welcome, Autumn!

June ~ Beach Roses

Hi!
It's June. It's a chilly grey day, a day to light all the scented candles and brew a hot cup of tea, a day for laundry and sewing. Out on the the beach however, the dunes roses are undaunted. They burst into bloom promptly on June first. Their sweet perfume fills the still foggy air today.

The hardy wild native beach roses grow on each side of the pathway over the dunes. White roses are rare, pink is the usual color. Both are filled with bumble bees on sunny mornings and smell delightful.

Remember this?

This is much nicer....

This must be a domesticated beach rose. It's very pretty, planted along the beach lane.

Have a beautiful weekend! Bring your coffee and meet me at the bench?

Dunes, Late Summer

It's October---hot and brilliantly sunny here.

Hi everyone! It is still summer where you are?

I don't think we can call this Indian summer [and is that an okay term nowadays?] since there's been no hint of cool weather or heaven forbid, frost. So I'm gonna go with "summer" even as I walk the dunes and shore and search for signs of changing seasons.

The dunes are quite busy with flocks of birds---blackbirds, warblers, crows, rock doves (mourning doves? NYC pigeon escapees?). Arriving sanderlings, above and below; they will winter here.

In the now flat but grassy outer dune area a small band of maybe a dozen of piping plovers has gathered. Oddly they are snuggling into the hot dry sand as if they are nesting. Maybe they are making their spot for next year?

I know, you can't see them! Their camouflage makes up for their lack of defensive abilities. He's in the clump of grass below the dark green goldenrod, towards the left center.

See?

There have been a few oystercatchers on quiet evenings...October 2nd is their usual final grouping and leaving date. And in the marshes, just a hint of amber is appearing, along with large white herons and egrets. The herons/egrets group into small flocks and always remind me of ghosts in the misty marshes.
oystercatcher, below with sanderlings and plovers...

Goldenrod is just now in bloom. No bittersweet yet on the marsh verge, did it wash away during Sandy?

The roses continue to flower and scent the air with summer...

The bushes also produce very pretty berries...

though on close inspection I see why no creature eats these prickly fruits...

I put a pumpkin by my doorstep...I am ready, I'm waiting. Hey Autumn! Where are you...?
