Dotty 365 and other July Projects

Hello, everyone. Hard to imagine, but, yes, it's August. Time to show off my Circles or Dots for July.

July 31 Dot is block 269.
96/7 left to go, or a few more than that if I make my quilt 19 rows of 20 Dots. Anyway, the end is in sight.

This month I mostly focused on fabric scraps from blocks I am making for other projects, like P2 and Wild Geese.

Mixed in a few special days, a birthday dress, a bath day for Mo the Pug.

Only a few dark Dots, with thimbles to recall sadly the long painful yet empty days of this summer. [I am somewhat better now, thanks.].

A few lighthouses and beachy things, remembering fun summers in Cape Cod.

I always do a little drawing in my Dotty Journal. Haha. This one was not enhanced by my finally finding my fave red Sharpie!

I'm still enjoying this project, enough that I have at times mulled over the idea of ''next year'' done in Japanese indigo fabrics, blue batiks and antique blue cottons. Though I  haven't seem my Japanese blue fabrics since I moved into my little craft space this past year!

My fill-in ''just for fun'' project is When the Wild Geese Fly. This quilt is made with thrifted shirts and leftover felted wools. Some snowy day I imagine myself making the 200 or so Geese blocks. Huh.

The School Children, a Basket, a Pumpkin.

The Pumpkin is to fill up the empty memorial block on Patek's pattern. I commend her thoughtfulness but for myself I'd like something happier there. I did a layered pumpkin, wool and calico. Maybe will put dates or initials in the corners?

Though this Basket is also a perfect space for a date or name, I think.

I plan to do all three of the quilt's buildings using the strip piecing logs, so this quilt will be put aside for awhile til I can machine sew again.

I have a question for you guys--quilters, but anyone can weigh in with an idea. I am wondering how you all store your completed quilt blocks?

I ve been hanging my projects up on these cool clipboards but it's not a great long term solution.

On the other hand I don't want to fold them up in a Baggie: out of sight, out of mind. I use a pretty storage box for Dotty 365, but it's too small for a full size quilt's blocks. A friend gave me this cool tin for my quilt blocks---but big blocks like P2 won't begin to fit.

So...ideas? How do  you store your in-work but completed blocks?

Thanks!

love

  1. Oh I do love the dots :) In this group I think the crabby, the seahorse, and the red/orange? gingham are pretty fun. Wow! You might do another? I'm excited already.

Hope your quilting friends chime in on storage ideas.

So glad to know you're feeling a little better. Sending continued wishes for your health. This all had to have really taken the wind out of your sails. The beach is waiting for you.

    Take care,

    Kel

  2. I love the little flag dot for the 4th! Although I STILL think you should arrange them in months, with blank blocks to divide them, LOL. I love the 'fill in' quilt blocks too, especially the pumpkin! I love the pumpkin, it's so gorgeous! Although you're on your own with the hundreds of flying geese, yeesh, I'd put a strip border instead! I don't like triangles!

Hmm, I don't quilt but my mom did. She did mostly quilts with regular squares and stored them in flat boxes (like beer flats?). Have you looked at the flat square boxes made for storing scrapbooking paper? I don't know if they'd be big enough for some of your blocks, but they might work - they're clear, would stack well, and you could label them. Alternately, if you want to keep them on display, I'd cover a wall in your craft room (if there is one) with cork squares and pin them up with straight pins! Or heck - use any wall as the blocks are cute enough to pass as wall art anywhere - and yeah, I know, you don't do wall art...!

Hey, I love your journal page for July, too, it looks pretty exuberant! Have you ever thought of scanning your art pages and printing them onto that inkjet-printable fabric and adding them into a quilt? That would be so cool, very personal and totally one of a kind!

I'm glad you're feeling better and that Friday didn't get you down!

Take care and thanks for sharing!

  3. Lovely post today. I store my blocks in a baggie.... I do have empty pizza boxes though that I got at quilt class years ago that work really good.

  4. I have no idea how to store the quilt blocks. I found (another) one of my grandmother's blocks in an old stationery box a couple of months ago (small block and I thought it was a small bit of paper).

I LOVE the dots. Even if you've gone a bit 'dotty' with it (pun intended), it will be a great memory for this year!

best of the dog days to you and Mo!

  6. Hi,
Love your dots, very pretty. As for storage, I use one of those plastic rolling cabinets. I also use this for my quilt tops until I get them done. Have a great day!

    1. See next comment also. The info is in this post, which also has a link to Audrey's inspiration post and how she designed the project. https://gone2thebeach.blogspot.com/2015/11/grey-rain-high-winds-november-quilting.html

  12. Hi You didn't leave a name or email? The squares were 4 1/2" cut. I think the circles were 3" finishhed, needle turned. A smuckers jam jar lid was the template, you know, the gingham ones.
