Back to the Beach

Hi everyone! I hope you all had wonderful holidays so far. Here at the beach the weather has been amazing. Almost 60* for the past four days and no wind, brilliant sunshine. Mo and I sat out on the deck! And I was able to begin hand quilting my Peace and Plenty [Cascadia] quilt.

The beach however was the big draw.

It called to me, Come out, come out and play!

I'm determined to find time for my daily beach walks this winter, despite walking Mo as much as 4.5 miles a day. The ocean soothes my soul and nourishes my creativity.

One day I went to the surfing beach which is about two miles west of my own beach.

I had not been back, except to walk on the shoreline, since before H Sandy, so about two years. For awhile this area was inaccessible; the boardwalk still has not been rebuilt.

It's a lovely beach, narrower than my beach. A good place to walk when I don't have the time or energy to hike all the way down to my shoreline.

Despite the darkness, these photos were taken at about 3 PM on a sunny day. Darkness comes early still.

Many years ago---75? 100? these giant granite boulders were brought here and formed these jetties. The rocks look black but up close are beautiful if functionless glittery bejeweled granite. They are the reason the beach is narrow here, jetties do not ''work''..but they also create the waves that angle smoothly to shore for surfing, so not a total fail, but a serendipitous result.

These are more of the manmade dunes. Maybe 20 feet high?---forming a new cliff of sorts.

This used to be a wide expanse of rolling dunes covered with sea grasses, scrub pine bayberry and bittersweet.

Now a wasteland. This is a narrow, low lying section of my island and here H Sandy's storm surge swept over these dunes all the way to the bay beyond, filling the schools nearby and destroying the school admin building across the street here.
So peaceful now.

Below a few Christmas pictures.

All went well...gifts were good, Santa did a good job. Both dinners were okay.

Here is Mo in his newest jacket, a Puppia parka halter combo!

And riding in his new car seat.

My premature narcissus are so pretty. In full bloom, a hint of spring.

How about you guys, was Santa good to you?

gone to the beach............

Below: an anonymous beach drawing. What a wonderful folk art Mr. Sunshine. You guys know how much I love Mr. Sunshine images, and I was thrilled to discover this on my own beach. A favorable omen for 2015. I love it.

  1. What beautiful photos. Your table was so gorgeous. And Mo! I, too, love beach drawings. Mr. Sun was so simple and fun. I'm going to start leaving them. It's not only the skill, is it? It's the spirit. The for the inspiration again and happy new year. Hugs.

  5. Great photos, if you didn't know better, you'd think they were taken during summer. The surfing beach is beautiful. Glad your Christmas was nice, ours was too. Kind of quiet which was just what we wanted. Mo might be spoiled :) Thank you for sharing, hope you continue to have mild weather.

    1. Merry Christmas Kel! I m glad you had a good holiday. How did your tree do with the kitties? I do hope we have a mild winter, I love the idea of snow but not the reality. Yes Mo is spoiled. So he had a tantrum and destroyed one of his beds! LOL.
I saw Kitty today, my beloved feral black kitty. I offered her a doggy treat from my pocket [I was with Mo] and she took it from my hand! A special gift for me as I do love the cats. Stripey has been visiting too.

Happy New Year to you and evryone here on my blog!

    2. Well...Fussy knocked the tree over. I assume it was Fussy, it's ALWAYS Fussy. Tree was mostly fine, but the hardwood floor is a little worse for wear after having the tree water on it for hours. They were given a monstrous kitty condo/tree for Christmas so that's been keeping them busy :) That makes me so happy that Kitty accepted your gift, and that Stripey has been visiting. It's the small things isn't it? Would LOVE to see video of Mo having a tantrum, haha.

Happy New year to you as well Lizzy.

    3. O my gosh I can t believe Fussy knocked OVER the tree. How awful. I hope no special ornaments were broken. That s why we put our funny fat tree up on that cabinet, I was afraid Mo would attack it or pee on it. So far he hasn t taken any notice so it worked fine.
He has the tantrums when I am working online, when he feels ignored---so I don t think I ll evr get him on vid being so bad. He stops when I look up. Partly it s my fault, the whole room was filled w/ oddly green [anti odor?] fiber fill before I noticed. Usually it s rolls of Charmin, his fave.....

  6. Mo looks very dashing and distinguished in his new jacket, and it looks like he loves his car seat! The pictures of the beach are beautiful, they always make me want to walk in the sand. The sand art was a nice little surprise. I love things like that, and it's not like graffiti - the wind and water will erase it before long. I'm glad it lasted long enough for you to find!

Our Christmas(es) were nice, but poor Spook is ill and had to spend the night at the vet. He may not be speaking to me when he gets home...

Also good to hear 'your' kitties are still around!

Thanks for sharing your holiday and photos!
