Quiet Time

Hi! This has been a delightfully quiet week here at the beach. Much as I love the summer busy-ness and friends and family galore, I also relish some quiet time alone.

Do you ever feel that way?

These photos were taken on a quiet late afternoon walk. It's been an oddly cool summer and even though the afternoons are often hot, in the eighties, by early evening the breeze has cooled things down.

The beach is filled with the returning gulls and their big dark ugly babies. Mosy of these gulls are herring gulls.

My beach is professionally cleaned by our town, mornings and evenings. But a midday high tide can leave a trail of not-pretty flotsam along the tideline. The lines of black are tiny empty mussel shells. They'll be gone the next day, only to return next summer as they hatch or whatever they do out there.

Gully wannabee. He came up to my chair and WAH-Wah!!, begged.

I think this is the real Gully in the background.

Maybe this is his or her bad baby?
A little Gully-in-training?

Unknown shellseekers, below. I saved this photo, thinking it would make a wonderful painting. I love the lack of color, just shades of khaki and grey---maybe just a bright spot of color, the boy's board shorts, or a sandbucket?

Back home, on the deck, I've been eking out a half hour each evening to sew on my Eagle block. Does it look less like a goose now? I redrew the eagle's head. [the stars inside the wreath are not as white as shown in the photo. But I may have to go back with tea and a paintbrush and darken it up.]

I am teaching Mo to sit beside me in his own chair!

He has a special Kong thing so he can hold his chew sticks by himself.

Unfortunately so far he thinks the game is Throw the chewy down for mom to retrieve. Stitch, stitch, pick up the chewy. Stitch, stitch. And repeat.

The eagle is about 1/2 done. Then there are the stars to be done this month. I think I will do them with a whipstitch, my compromise between too hard needle turn [too slow, I mean] and machine sewing.

I prewashed the corner triangles' reds the other day, and rinsed them in Retayne. I'm glad I did because they ran a lot even with the Retayne. I rinsed them until they showed clear rinse water. I hope that fixed the red dye! (Or disaster looms!?).

Have a great weekend! Here's hoping my blog friend Hunter weathers the hurricanes okay, in Maui!

  1. Your eagle looks great....I'm doing this quilt also. I've been enjoying your blog. I discovered it through Lori/Humble Quilts when she listed everyone participating in the flag quilt. I had some issues with my block since I used homespuns and flannels..alot of stretching going on! But I'm loving this quilt so far!

  2. Mo is such a cutie! Your eagle looks good to me. Wish someone would clean our beaches. When I go out there, I will pick up trash. But it's a wasted effort as the cleanup is never done since people go there daily and trash it all over again. They'll go out there to eat and then just leave their back of trash rather than picking it up and tossing it in the nearest trashcan as they go to their car. I mean, really, I just don't get that way of thinking at all. I definitely crave quiet time more often than not. Just spent 5 hours cleaning. My quiet time begins now. :) Have a good weekend. Tammy

  3. OMG, yes! I haven't had a lot of private quiet time so far this YEAR, as someone else was usually home or just coming or going. But things are *cautiously* looking up, so here's hoping!

Maybe you could tie Mo's Kong thing to the chair arm? So it couldn't go too far and he could retrieve it himself? Or is he having too much fun for that...?

Your eagle looks much improved - THANK YOU - because I couldn't handle the goose-looking one, LOL. (I'd love to see Cathy's quilt, too, if she's willing to share pictures.)

I agree that the beach photo would make a very interesting beach-scene painting! I've never painted water or I'd try it!

And yes, Hunter, if you see this - I hope you stay high and safe from the storms!

    Take care, everyone!

  4. I am mostly a solo runner, so that is when I get my quiet time and I like it.
I never said to get the stars appliqued! I finished my eagle center last night. Yay! I love yours. I'm thinking about tea dying my whole block, but will wait until I add more blocks to it to see if it really needs it.

  5. Life is a balance isn't it? It's great to have family and friends around, but then you relish the quiet time when you get it. One makes us appreciate the other.

I didn't know they made a thing that makes it easier for a doggie to hold onto their chew sticks! Hah, it's not much different than having a baby that can't hold onto it's pacifier. Dang, wouldn't you like to be the person that invented the 'kong thing'? I like Mel's idea of attaching it to the chair arm...but then you might lament the fact that he doesn't need your help anymore. :( Not nearly as much fun.
