Columbus Day

[lots of pix, pls click to enlarge/ see slide show]

Hi everyone! Today is Columbus Day Monday here at the beach. This weekend marks the end of our summer, when the days are still hot and sunny but the nights are cooler, sometimes foggy. My friend "L" and I always have a special day trip treat about now. She'll call me and say, "Oh let's get out for the day!" And off we go to the pumpkin patch.

Actually this is the fine garden nursery we love...

Transformed for Autumn....

Biggest mums I ever saw...

I am partial to the weird bumpy heirloom pumpkins and squash....

This aqua Cinderella pumpkin is my fave--when carved at Halloween, the innards are deep beautiful orange!

....though I thought the pink warty ones were very wonderful too.In a sort of creepy way?

Ornamental kale/ cabbages....

Pumpkins small...

Medium... on a reclaimed boardwalk!

Pumpkins large...

And giants! [they cost about 100.oo each!]

My kids always choose a humongous one or two! But not today...

This garden shop also specializes in fairy gardens.

So adorable.....

And wonderful fall blooming hydrangeas...

Autumn perennials, in case you're bored with mums?...

And great ideas for next year's garden!

We also made a stop at the local CVS [drugstore] to stock up on their flameless candles. Much as I love real candles, the flameless ones are a decorating gem....

LOL, I had so much fun looking I forgot to buy my fall / winter forcing bulbs, and locally picked apples. Guess another visit will be needed next week, after I get the house into its autumn finery.

  1. Very cool! I've seen the aqua-colored pumpkins before but didn't know the name. Hadn't seen the pink ones. And I had no idea there were regular-shaped orange pumpkins with WARTS! LOL. I drooled over all the pictures of flowers -- and the fairy gardens, I'm such a sucker for those...! I'm glad you had such a fun day, and hey! Perfect excuse to go back!

  2. Our markets are incredibly limited. The only time I tried to go to a pumpkin patch this year, I think you could have eaten pie in the field (just add sugar)! So wonderful to see the choices you have!
